A signal for Tibet – The Fashion rEvolution supports “9 Fingers for Tibet” and the peaceful protests against China

JAG Communications Employees Treated to PalmerSport Race Day Experience

On the 17th of April John George took 16 JAG employees on the PalmerSport Day at Bedford Autodrome in Northamptonshire. The day comprised of a full briefing, followed by colleagues and co-workers racing each other in a series of seven different high-performance vehicles.

John managed to win the Palmer Jaguar JP1, Porsche 911 JP3 and Caterham 7 Sprint races; making him the overall winner of the day. To his dismay, Andy Whitaker beat John over the line in the Renault Clio Cup session; despite John’s previous racing experience in the Clio Cup.

One highlight of the day included Business Manager Hayley Luxton being “blue-flagged” (a warning given to drivers to move away from the racing line when they are about to be overtaken). Hayley complied with the warning at first and pulled her car over, before changing her mind and re-entering the racing line, pushing Group Operations Manager Scott Fulfitt into a “brake here” sign in the process.

Despite his little accident, Scott had a good time, finishing in 7th overall for the day. He said: “The day was excellent and a huge amount of thought was put into it, from signing in, the food, travel… it was good to see that everyone, including people who were not that sure about driving too fast had a good day. It was great to meet everyone in such a great atmosphere.”

The event was made possible by Orange, who also sent five of their own staff to the event to mingle with JAG’s employees and compete against them in the racing. JAG’s ongoing Preferred Partner status with the network comes as a result of the company connecting so many users to Orange; the PalmerSport Day was a further incentive, and a thank-you from the network to JAG.

JAG invited five of its branch staff to the event, for selling high volumes of various different Orange products. Although the incentive was open to all JAG branch staff, it was only Branch Managers who made the mark. Andy Macey, Manager of JAG’s Shirley branch, Lee McBride (Manager, Gosport) Steve Turner (Manager, Falmouth) and Maxine Ryl (Manager, Belper) all attended the racing day.

Maxine said: “It was a very competitive day and we all had a great time. Working for JAG is like being part of one big team, and the Palmer Day really showed that.”

Andy Whitaker, JAG Group Manager who has raced rally cars competitively in the past said: “This wasn’t the first time I’ve been on one of these days, but whenever I get the chance to go, I go. It’s so well organised, the cars are well-kept and the instructors are brilliant. It’s a fantastic place.”

Area Manager Joanne Whyman said: “It was an incredible experience. I feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to race seven different super cars in one day. We had professional racing drivers in the cars with us showing us how to do it all and they really pushed us to the limit. I liked the Land Rover bit best –it was more skill than speed.”

John George, the most experienced racer present on the day said: “It’s terrific to share my hobby with my friends and colleagues –the day was good for teambuilding and getting to know some JAG staff a bit better. Everyone got into the spirit of the day and I’m delighted by how much they all enjoyed it.”

The Palmer Day was another example of the wide range of perks and incentives available to JAG’s employees across the board, from Sales Executives to Senior Management.

Branch Manager of JAG’s Falmouth branch, Steve Turner said: “I’ve known most of these people for years, but it was great to get to know some of the new staff JAG has taken on, in such a relaxed and enjoyable environment. It was the day of a lifetime.”

JAG Communications Appoints its 14th Area Manager

JAG Communications has appointed yet another Area Manager to oversee its expanding network of retail outlets.

Andy McClounan has worked in the mobile phone sector for over a decade; acting as an Area Manager for Go Mobile until the company was taken over by JAG at the beginning of 2008. Since January, Andy has been managing JAG’s branch in Hull.

Andy’s new area will include branches in Whitby, Carlisle, Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Ripon, Richmond, Thirsk and Chester Le Street. His role will be to liaise with Branch Managers, monitor and improve individual store performance and take part in regular meetings with other members of the company’s Senior Management team.

John George said: “JAG has expanded a lot recently, not just in the number of branches we operate and the number of retail staff we employ; but in the geographical span of our retail network. This has meant a lot of unnecessary travelling for our team of Area Managers, so we’ve been looking at expanding that team in order to maximise the efficiency of their operations. We’re very pleased to have someone with Andy’s drive and determination onside, and we all wish him the best of luck in his new position.”

Andy McClounan started out in the world of business 13 years ago, when established his own business selling fish. He sold the project for a profit, before a short spell in the army as a technical engineer. Having left the military, he got into the mobile phone trade and has been successful in the field ever since.

He said: “I’m hoping to bring a lot of enthusiasm to this role. This game is all about personality and charisma- I’m hoping to bring compliance to all eight of my new branches to maximise their profitability.”

JAG now employs 14 Area Managers, who are responsible for 149 branches between them, spanning England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Minnesota Woman Delivers Child through Surrogacy

Waite Park, MN, April 4, 2008 – Jenny Fortwengler, Minnesota resident and mother of two, celebrated the birth of a new baby in February. As a surrogate, she carried and delivered the baby for a couple who had gone through the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF) with an egg donor. Fortwengler had been selected by the couple through Growing Generations, the largest surrogacy agency in the world. Since 1996, Growing Generations has assisted more than 1000 clients from 19 countries with the surrogacy process.

Fortwengler was drawn to surrogacy based on experiences that she’d had with her own children. “I really enjoyed being pregnant with my own children and wanted to learn more about surrogacy,” said Fortwengler. “So, I went online and researched surrogacy, where I found there to be many options to choose from.” After reviewing message boards on the Internet and surrogate agencies’ Web sites, Fortwengler was particularly drawn to Growing Generations. “What I liked about Growing Generations is that they work with singles and gay couples, as well as heterosexual couples. Their Web site also stood out as being well put together and professional.”

Fortwengler applied to Growing Generations’ surrogacy program and was accepted. During the application process, she and her husband spoke with agency staff members to get all of their questions answered. “My husband wanted to ask questions about the medical risks above all,” said Fortwengler. “Once he received answers to those questions, he was totally on board.” Friends and family came on board as well, with Forwengler noting that her experience “opened their eyes to possibility.” During the process, Fortwengler ultimately felt that surrogacy brought her entire family closer together.

Later, she recalls her first meeting with the couple. “I was so nervous,” said Fortwengler. “My husband said, ‘Just think that they are probably more nervous than you.’ It’s a little like a blind date. But we clicked and hit it off. It was a good match from the start.”

After becoming pregnant, her relationship with the couple bloomed through weekly email exchanges and visits. “I remember that carrying the child as a surrogate mother wasn’t like carrying my own kids,” said Fortwengler. “I knew that I was carrying [the couple’s] child, so I wasn’t emotionally attached. I learned to expect the unexpected, in the sense that not everything went the way I thought it would. Some parts of the process went by really slowly and others very fast.”

On the day of the birth, the couple was present, alongside Fortwengler. Her husband was also in the room, holding her hand. She recalls a distinct moment after the delivery. “[The doctor] was about to put the baby on my stomach when I pointed to the couple. ‘It’s their baby,’ I said. When I saw them holding the baby, I started crying. I thought to myself that this was amazing, and everything that I had hoped it would be.”

Fortwengler has said that, for her, the best part of surrogacy is the birth. Being able to watch parents with their new baby and witness the culmination of how long they waited and how much they wanted it, was a powerful experience for both her and her family. For that reason, Fortwengler is ready for another surrogacy. “[After the birth], I knew right away that I wanted to go again.” When asked why, her response is simple: “There are a lot of couples and singles out there who need surrogates. I know that I can do this for them, and that it gives me immense personal satisfaction.”

“There is plenty of coal in the ground, both within the United States, and internationally. It continues to be a topic of revisitation whenever oil prices (and resultant prices at the gasoline pump) are rising or whenever the availability of oil is threatened due to political or economic instability.

“Proponents of coal persist in reciting the virtues of its availability, its price, and its safety. These same adherents will always cite a nuclear power plant tragedy (i.e., the Chernobyl meltdown) as the reason that we have to turn away from nuclear power and revert to coal, the preferred fuel in the romantic days of Charles Dickens.

“The essence of the argument is always this: “If we stick with coal, we’ll never have to worry about a nuclear reactor incident.” This is not unlike saying, “If we drive everywhere, then we’ll never have to worry about dying in a plane crash.”

“Both comparisons are equally ridiculous, and are unsupported by actual logic or statistics. They are both based upon sensationalized misperceptions. In the same manner that automobile-related fatalities outnumber airline disasters by several orders of magnitude, coal-related problems are far more dangerous, and do far more damage (consistently and cumulatively) than the additive consequences of every leakage or meltdown incident involving conventional nuclear reactors since the beginning of the era of nuclear energy!

“Burning coal produces smoke, ash and particulate matter laden with toxins (poisonous carbon monoxide, sufides, acidic corrosives and even airborne radioactive material, all of which accelerate global warming, all of which are toxic to plant and animal life, and all of which befoul the atmosphere). This does not happen occasionally, or by accident — it is an inherent hazard associated with burning fuels through combustion. Remember “coal miner’s lung”?

“The irony here is that it is becoming increasingly well-recognized that coal-burning produces more radioactive thorium ash (which is thrown into the air and blown about by the wind) than a nuclear reactor. That’s correct — burning coal produces more air-borne radiation than a nuclear reactor does!
“We continue to believe that Thorium energy is the only viable long-term, large-scale energy solution. And we’re not alone. Every day we re approached by more and more corporate buyers who want to stockpile thorium. For the time being, we’re adopting a ‘wait and see’ posture.”

Comic Book Industry Hall-of-Famer Al Feldstein Signs as Creative Adviser On “Ghoulishly Yours, William M. Gaines”

Al Feldstein, renowned as the creative brain trust behind the legendary E.C. line of comic books, has signed on as Creative Adviser in Joel Eisenberg and John Landis’ upcoming feature film, “Ghoulishly Yours, William M. Gaines.”

Feldstein, who started with E.C. publisher William M. Gaines as an artist, ultimately wrote and edited most of their titles, including “Tales From The Crypt.” In later years, he became editor of “Mad.”

Says Feldstein, “I am truly enthusiastic to be associated with ‘Ghoulishly Yours, William M. Gaines’ as the film’s creative adviser. This film will be about the most exciting editorial and artistic creative period in comic book history, which was then followed by the most devastating, self-destructive and self-castrating period in its history. As E.C.’s major creative force, I am truly hopeful and optimistic that, finally, the whole truth will be told.”

The biographical film, written by Eisenberg, will revolve around the banding together of an anti-establishment group of comic book creators, led by a reluctant Gaines and his cohort Feldstein, as they produce their controversial, yet hugely popular, line of comic books. Their notorious titles later led Gaines to voluntarily face Senate subcommittee hearings in defense of his industry, which was widely condemned for perpetuating juvenile delinquency.

The American Council of the Blind of New York Praises CBVH for Openness and Transparency

Albany, New York – April 4, 2008 – The American Council of the Blind of New York (ACBNY) praised the Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped (CBVH) and the Executive Board leadership for its bold move after learning that meetings of the new Executive Board charged with investigating the state of services for people who are blind and visually impaired in New York State will be webcast.

Opposition to this idea had been strong due to claims of inordinate cost for the process. But Mike Godino, President of ACBNY applauded the decision because the funds used to provide streaming would not affect any services for blind and visually impaired people.

“We have been advocating from the beginning for a transparent process in the selection and operation of this Board. We’re very pleased with this decision, which will allow maximum participation in this important work,” said Mr. Godino.

ACBNY firmly believes that, since blind and visually impaired people live all over the state, it is important all people be able to participate in the Executive Board’s deliberative process. The Commissioner’s decision would ensure that everyone could understand how their lives would be affected by the Executive Board.

“It was crucial that this be an open and transparent process,” President Mike Godino said. “Discussions that effect people who are blind or visually impaired and their friends and families certainly need to take place in the open. This is absolutely in line with Governor Paterson’s commitment to transparent government processes, and we commend the Commission and the board for taking this action.”

The first meeting to be web cast will be on April 9. The Executive Board is mandated to report its findings to the Governor on January 1, 2009. All proceedings, with the exception of executive sessions, will be streamed live, archived on the Web site of the Commission for the Blind, and visually handicapped.

Cork, Ireland – 03 April 2008 – Dark World International is proud to announce the members of Dream Quest have finally joined the company in Ireland and begun recording for their next release. Dream Quest’s debut release, Season One, has had growing internet sales in the U.S., Canada, and the EU. After several years of silence, techno-trance fans of Dream Quest will soon have a brand new release to enjoy.

Dream Quest began as a project by several signed artists from Dark World International. Banding together to support the company through the death of father, friend, and mentor Allan Ameringer, Dream Quest’s members chose to remain anonymous in the project and received credit simply as ‘Navigators’. The resulting first release, Season One, is a monumental instrumental tribute to both Allan Ameringer and the creative brilliance of the Dark World artists involved.

Work on a follow-up release began almost immediately. Unfortunately for Dream Quest fans, Season Two was never completed to the band’s satisfaction and remained unreleased and unheard for several years. When Dark World International moved base from North America to the EU, members of Dream Quest were unable to relocate with the company.

Now after several years of silence, the members of Dream Quest have joined Dark World International in Ireland and begun work on Season Three. As a special bonus for all Dream Quest and Dark World International fans, Dream Quest has also completed work on a remix of Deemed Psychotic’s song ‘The Hunter’.
