Church Bookstores Fastest-Growing Segment in Book Retailing

June 30th, 2008

An estimated 5,000 churches in the United States are now retailing books. The president of the Church Bookstore Network says church bookstores are the “fastest-growing portion of this industry.”

Atlanta, Ga, June 30, 2008 — The rapidly increasing number of bookstores operated by churches has led to the larger stores forming their own trade association.

The fourth annual Gathering of Church Bookstores was held in March 2008 at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. The event was co-hosted by The Church Bookstore magazine and the Church Bookstore Network. More than 230 managers and volunteers, representing 125 churches, attended the March 26-28 Gathering.
Church bookstores are “the fastest growing portion of this industry,” according to Geni Hulsey, president of the Church Bookstore Network and manager of the Garden Bookstore at Houston First Baptist Church, in a recent article published by Christianity Today magazine.

Hulsey began her church’s store almost 14 years ago with four six-foot tables of books and products in the church’s 76-seat café. Last year, the store, did $500,000 in business from its new 2,000-square-foot dedicated space inside the megachurch. About 60 percent of the revenue came from book and Bible sales.
A survey conducted at the Gathering found that more than half the participants had expanded their operations in the prior two years, while 48 percent reported increased sales in 2007.

Dave Condiff, associate publisher at The Church Bookstore magazine, estimates there are about 5,000 church bookstores in the U.S. A “church bookstore” can encompass anything from a 10,000-square-foot bookstore with $3 million in sales to a narthex book table,” he told Christianity Today.

To familiarize booming church bookstores with how to acquire low-cost inventory, the Great American Bargain Book Show (GABBS) is making a one-time offer for church store staffers to attend the show free.
The offer extends to church bookstore employees of all types – those who order books to stock the shelves, and those who sell the books as a way to spread the word among congregants and to help fund church activities.

“Church bookstores can acquire stock from well known publishers of Christian titles such as Thomas Nelson at bargain basement prices,” according to GABBS organizer Larry May of Knoxville, Tenn.
At least half of the vendors scheduled to attend GABBS at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta on Aug. 1-2 will be offering popular Christian titles for as little as 10 cents on the dollar, according to May, who said about 40,000 TO 50,000 book titles will be available.

To take advantage of the free registration offer, church bookstore employees need to visit the GABBS Web site to register, May said. “This is a great opportunity for church bookstores to stock up for the coming winter holiday season.”

According to May, less than 10 percent of the books manufactured in the United States get sold at full suggested retail price. The rest are discounted. Remainders – the books that don’t sell out at retail or discounted prices, books that are usually in pristine condition – constitute 31 percent of the $36 billion U.S. book business.

The Great American Bargain Book Show caters to buyers who purchase 25 or more copies of individual titles from dealers who specialize in remainders.

About GABBS: The Great American Bargain Book Show is one of the three largest bargain book shows in the United States, staged annually in time for retailers to buy inexpensive stock for marketing during the winter holiday season. The show is organized by L.B. May & Associates of Knoxville, Tenn. Further information at www.GABBS.net

The Native Boys to Perform on a West Coast Doo Wop Cruise

June 30th, 2008

They originally they didn’t call themselves the Native Boys, they were the Mellowtears and in spite of being from Los Angeles, their records sold better in the East

Los Angeles, CA June 30, 2008 — Grant Williams CEO of Memory Lane Concert Cruises today announced. The prestigious Native Boys will be among the twelve groups appearing on the legendary West Coast Doo Wop Cruise. “The Native Boys history is an essential part of West Coast Rhythm and Blues that goes back to 1954. Their recording of Strange Love remains today as a perfect display of why the music of the time was so unique and will be timeless forever.” said Williams

The story of the Native Boys began in 1954 when four students who attended Cathedral High School in Downtown Los Angeles. They formed a group called the Mellowtears. They were: Fred Romain, William Vincent “Vince” Weaver, Edward “Sack” Saunders, and Harry Rosemont.

The Mellowtears specialized in writing their own songs, and started by practicing on two of them that Vince had written; “Native Girl” and “It Won’t Take Vary Long”. They would often sing while walking around the Sunset Strip and Hollywood Boulevard. Especially near the Brown Derby and Grumman’s Chinese Theater where most of the record companies were. .

The Mellowtears eventually hooked up with Maxwell Davis, a well-known sax player who helped them get an audition with Aladdin Records, which turned them down. Later Davis took them to Modern Records and finally given a contract to do a single session. At first the Mellowtears only dealt with Davis, and not any of the Bihari’s who owned Modern. There were two interesting facts about their first record they recorded for Modern, first was Vince Weaver’s name doesn’t appear as writer on either side. The Biharis took writer credit for themselves as they would often due on many occasions. But this time Joe Bihari took the credits on both sides. The second is the Mellowtears name did not appear on the record. Someone had the bright idea to rename them after their song, and the “Native Boys”. They had no say in this; they didn’t know about the name change until the release of the record. “It was a mindblower; we loved the name the Mellowtears. Says Vince.

Native Girl” was a real bouncing rocker, while “It Won’t Take Long” is a more mainstream up-tempo side. The Mellowtears didn’t think of themselves as the Native Boys but waited around for royalties to come pouring in. When nothing much happened with “Native Girl”, Harry Rosemont dropped out (subsequently attending Notre Dame University); George LeBrune replaced him. Although they have other jobs here and there, they mostly worked on their singing. Vince had a Webcor tape recorder which he used to record the guys so they could critique themselves.

Vernon “Jake” Porter of Combo Records listened to their tale of woe about Modern. He decided to groom them and help them work on their choreography. Jake had a studio in the basement of his house on North Virgil Avenue (near Los Angeles City College); where he listened to their tunes and helped polish them. At least, when Porter stuck his name on a song, he also included that of the original songwriter. There were no big shows, but they did once appear at a record hop with Hunter Hancock (whose “Hunting with Hunter” was one of the most popular radio shows in L.A.).”Strange Love” released in November 1955, did well in the east before making much noise in Los Angeles. While Jake told them it was doing well on the East Coast, he avoided any talk of “royalties”. It started showing up on local charts in March of 1956. Not one to miss an opportunity, Porter decided to release all the remaining Native Boys sides that same month. There was no surprise none of these records ever sold well. With fewer and fewer jobs coming in, the Native Boys drifted apart.

In 1957 Vince Weaver joined the Flairs. Meanwhile Fred Romain teamed up with a friend of his, Danny Kristian. They rerecorded “I’ve Got A Feeling” for Lee Rupe’s new Ebb label. Lee was the wife of Specialty owner Art Rupe now calling them the Ebbtones. While that was the end of the Native Boys, Weaver and Romaine kept at it in the music business with varying degrees of success into the nineteen sixties. Despite their short and mostly unremarkable history, “Strange Love” remains, as a perfect display of why the music of the time was unique and timeless forever. Today Fred Romaine and Charles Eledridge lead singer of the Youngsters continue perform as the Native Boys.

On April 19 2009, the Native Boys will perform on Carnival cruise lines newest and most innovative ship in the world the Splendor. Sailing from Los Angeles to the Mexican Riviera on a 7-day cruise. There has never been a Doo Wop event this spectacular on the West Coast in over fifty years.

United States faces a perfect storm “the disconnect between education and the workplace”

June 17th, 2008

Employers are discovering increasing numbers of high school graduates who cannot do “applied” math, perform basic measurements and fill out job applications. In other words, “they are graduates who are not employable.” Fifty percent of high school graduates who go on to college must take remedial English or Math to graduate from college.

A new eBook, “Plan Your Career Now!” clearly addresses the problem facing employers and employees in the search for talent for present and future jobs. “Plan Your Career Now!” not only provides insight into the problems, it also presents many solutions to help the future workforce become “employable.”

A report, issued by America’s Promise Alliance, in 2008, found that seventeen of the nation’s 50 largest cities had high school graduation rates lower than 50 percent. Nationally, about1.2 million students drop out annually with only 70 percent of U.S. students graduating on time with a regular diploma.

For the young people who drop out of high school, college is an unlikely option. The vast majority of these individuals will also be stuck in minimum wage jobs most if not all of their lives. But even more disturbing is the current lack of preparedness of the nation’s high school graduates.

Well over half of new workforce entrants with only a high school diploma are deficiently prepared in all ten of the skills that employers rate critical. These include both basic skills such as writing, mathematics, and reading, as well as applied skills such as critical thinking, work ethic, and teamwork.

On the job, many college graduates are having difficulty writing clear concise reports. Although computer skills are generally good with the young generation of new workers, many rely on spell-check, not realizing the difference between words such as “there” and “their.” Even text messaging spelling is cropping up in both high school and college papers.

According to one study 60 percent of employers question whether a diploma means students have learned applied academic basics.” Many employers put relatively low priority on candidates’ years of schooling and grade-point average. Employers are more concerned about the applicants’ attitude and work ethic and their ability to work in an ever changing, knowledge based work environment.

Quoting Tom Vander Ark, director of education for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, “Today we have reached a crisis; we are virtually at a tipping point! Our culture and our education system are only producing a small percentage of individuals who are taking a “challenging curriculum” so they are truly prepared for the rigors of college or a knowledge-based workplace.”

At a time when we need to be preparing individuals for a “knowledge-based workplace” the average school year is 180 days or less, and little more than five hours a day of actual teacher – student classroom subject time is the norm. Compare this to the six day school week in most Asian countries. Add to this the high school drop out rate, failing test scores in core subjects, lack of “real world” career counseling and the millions of retiring baby boomers; it quickly becomes apparent the number of “employable” workers is shrinking. “We are truly becoming a Nation at Risk.”

Preparation of our young people to compete in the workplace should be major headlines, and a continual discussion point by the media, but it is treated at best, casually. In fact our failure to educate and lack of student and parent/guardian involvement should be the subject of ongoing debate by all segments of our society, seeking resolution, because it is directly tied to the future of virtually every American community.

Officials, educators and the American public need to become acutely aware of the gravity of the problem, and become involved in greatly improving policies to enhance the preparation of our present and future workforce. The future of the American workforce depends on action by all citizens.
