Institutions of higher learning have always been a hotbed of cutting edge technology, social progression and political involvement. In response to the encouragement of on campus environmental organizations, more and more universities are starting to see the world through green colored glasses and finding more ways to conserve resources, ensuring that the only noxious emissions are those coming from the freshmen dormitories.

In fact, 4,100 institutions of higher learning have LEED certified buildings to total a whopping 240,000 buildings nationwide, according to the United States Green Building Council, and countless other schools are feverishly adopting wind towers, sustainability goals and recycling programs. And latest group jumping on the green bandwagon?

Admissions departments. They not only able to be more green, they’re able to save some serious green for colleges and universities through the use of newer software and technology that can virtually eliminate the mountains of paperwork and official correspondence to attract new recruits and keep the current ones.

It’s called Enrollment Management Technology (EMT) software. A Cincinnati based company, Hobsons, develops EMT software programs specifically to address the unique challenges facing education administrators, and is leading admissions departments nationwide down the green/green path through its time and resource saving management services.

“A typical college application file can be 20 to 30 pages long and include letters of recommendation, transcripts, essays and test scores,” Hobsons EMT vice president of engineering Gus Costa said.  “In 2008 alone, Hobsons EMT processed almost 2 million online applications, eliminating the need to generate 60 to 90 million pieces or the equivalent of one million pounds of paper.”

In addition to saving enough sheets of paper to match the height of the Empire State Building 200 times over, these tools have proven to be a significant time saver as well. Green Mountain College in southern Vermont, best known for its eco-friendly programming, signed with Hobsons for their paperless enrollment capabilities and found it also improved efficiency within the admissions department.

“We estimate our EMT services save us 20 hours a week between various members of our staff,” assistant director of admissions Allison Stacey said. “Inquiry replies and follow-ups are automated, saving us valuable time and enabling us to focus on prospecting and student retention.”

Steve Syverson, vice president of enrollment at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin echoes Stacey’s enthusiasm for electronically submitted applications. A high percentage of the 2,500 applications they received last year were paperless.

“Not only do electronic applications allow us to reduce the labor costs associated with maintaining physical files, we will avoid using over 30,000 pieces of paper,” Syverson said.

Students are noticing a difference as well. Cory Weeks, a freshman at Indiana University, applied to 11 schools during his senior year of high school using an online program, enabling prospective students to apply to several universities in a single application. “The process of applying online was so much easier than I’d expected,” he said. “In fact, many universities encouraged online application by waiving the submission fee.”

And, despite the name, EMT software doesn’t stop at the application level Peterson added. “Throughout a student’s academic career, they will receive customized, consistent communication from the university which is distributed seamlessly and effortlessly through the EMT service.”

Peterson added that there are other services included with an EMT package which flag students at-risk of dropping out in order to provide more immediate faculty attention and improve graduation rates.

OSSCamp Delhi September 2009 Ends With A Promise Of More

India’s largest Open Source unconference – OSSCamp Delhi September 2009 came to a closure on September 6th 2009 at the NSIT Campus in Dwarka, New Delhi. This much talked about, two days event saw more than 225 Open Source developers and enthusiasts come together to brainstorm on the latest Open Source tools and technologies. Number of Social Sandboxes on Open Source technologies and business far outnumbered the twenty scheduled discussions of the unconference.

Declaring the event a great success, Mr. Vineet Agrawal, Sr. Manager, Community and Alliances said, “We were very glad to see a lot of companies tag along and lead sessions on various Open Source technologies. The highlights were sessions on Grails by Intelligrape and on Scala by Xebia. The Scala talk invited the maximum attention from the campers. We were, also, very happy to have Adobe with us at the event who took a session on their RIA Framework – Flex 3.”

For the ever enthusiastic OSSCube employees, those were the days of lot of fun and learning. In house experts led many sessions like implementing Lucene in your Zend projects to securing PHP applications with Phing. There was an interesting talk on indie game development that drew a lot of camper’s attention. Other than these topical discussions, the campers also did a lot of social sandboxes on various concepts and products as well.

Open Source enthusiasts who took part in the unconference were very encouraged to find that more and more companies and experts are finding OSScamps as a reliable platform to talk about technology. The challenge for the organizers now is to not loose focus and not let the event become commercial. So far, the community has successfully kept the events as one of the best platforms for Open Source in the nation, and we believe that they will continue to do so.

S.E. Asia’s First “Fly-Fishing Only, Catch & Release” Destination

Asian Angling Adventures announces the first Fly-Fishing Only, Catch & Release in S.E. Asia will open in October 2009. This is both fisheries conservation and an eco-tourism project. It is based on a business / community partnership with the Karen people in remote valleys around Mae Sarieng, in Mae Hong Son Province, north-western Thailand. For over 5 years, a local Thai guide has been working with Karen village headmen in an effort to establish a sustainable tourism-based income. Earlier this year, he was joined by two international fly fishing guides with extensive experience in fishing New Zealand, Iceland, Chile, Argentina and Russia. The Asian Angling Adventures team have since been working hard to negotiate access contracts to establish this new “Fly-Fishing Only, Catch & Release” eco-tourism project.

According to the company’s founder, Jon Ingi, “Asian Angling Adventures goal is to help the Karen people utilise their fisheries resources in a sustainable manner.” Via catch & release, fish stocks within the long-established protection zones can be harnessed to directly generate revenue for the villages. This is to be achieved by multiple means. First, by payment of fisheries access fees for each protection zone. In addition, local Karen staff are being trained as guides, boatmen, porters, chefs, maximising the inflow of money to the broadest possible range of people. All possible consumable requirements such as fruit and vegetables will be purchased from local farms. Delightful cultural shows by school children will provide an evening’s entertainment, and earn much needed funds for the schools. Viability of establishing a fly-tying factory within this area is also being assessed. The goal is to increase local employment opportunities, thereby strengthening the company’s long-term relationship with the Karen people. We believe this will be a real win-win project for the Karen people, Asian Angling Adventures, and our future fishing clients.

Lake District Hotel Celebrates Borrowdale Valley History

The Borrowdale Hotel steps back in time with an exhibition of old photographs depicting life in the Borrowdale valley hundreds of years ago. The exhibition is set to run until the end of October.

The display, by kind permission of Patricia Roscamp, is made up from historical photographs that have been hung in the Borrowdale Hotel bar. It is quite fitting that the photographic exhibition is being held at the Borrowdale hotel in the Lake District – built over 140 years ago it was the first purpose built hotel in the valley.

General Manager Stephen Wilcock is also marking the occasion by introducing a luncheon and dinner menu that is representative of the 1800’s. Dinner guests can choose from today’s a-la-carte menu, or choose dishes from a menu available to guests in the 19th century. The menu is as close to tradition as possible, but certainly doesn’t go as far as Heston Blumenthal’s Tudor feasts shown on TV last autumn. Diners can choose from two, three or four courses which includes Victorian favourites like ‘Ham Hock Terrine with pureed peas, roast goose and an old fashioned desert of Lemon Posset with almond brandy.

Head Chef Peter Starauscheck has tried to replicate 19th century dishes wherever possible, but knows tastes have changed! “Local ingredients and seasonality have always been important, but Chef’s in 1800 would have goose on the menu any time of the year – today geese are generally available around Christmas, so we had to place a special order to ensure we could include Goose on the menu. Once the Pheasant season begins we will be introducing a three bird roast of goose stuffed with a chicken and pheasant.”

Lunch time visitors to this luxury Lake District hotel can sample the ‘Bygone Days two or three course luncheon’ while they peruse the photos and history of the valley; potted salmon with pink peppercorns, egg, lemon, peppers and a tomato vinaigrette, or chunky vegetable and bacon soup, followed by slow braised shoulder of mutton served upon stewed pearl barley and vegetables. Proper puddings were certainly fashionable in the early 1800’s and a rhubarb and Bramley apple crumble mixed with oats and nuts would be warmly welcomed – then and now.

Stephen Wilcock said “we have completed most of the hotel refurbishment and thought the exhibition would be a good opportunity for local people to come and have a look. We have mounted the old pictures and hung them in the bar so visitors can see how the valley used to look while they enjoy lunch afternoon tea or dinner. Adding a 19th century dinner menu certainly tested Chef – but like today, they would have used as many local lake District ingredients as possible and diners will be delighted when they see what we can offer.”

Mumbai Xpress Winner’s Jacket Auctioned for Charity Funds

CHENNAI – The designers of the Mumbai Xpress Rickshaw Challenge Winner’s Jackets, Barhka-N-Sonzal, have requested that the funds produced from the auctioning of the extra winner’s jacket be donated to Aseema, an education center for street and underprivileged children.

The third annual Mumbai Xpress Rickshaw Challenge, an event produced by Chennai Event Management Services that had 27 international participants driving autorickshaws from Chennai to Mumbai, flagged down for the year in Mumbai on August 13th. The winners of the event, based on a point total for a series of accomplished tasks, charity donations, and team and organizer nominations, was the Nigel Manzil team, comprised of two gentlemen from the UK, Paul Haran and Harry Hanscomb.

Paul and Harry became the Mumbai Xpress Rickshaw Challenge World Champions and each received an extremely unique trophy, complimentary entrance into the 2010 Caucasian Challenge (another event from Chennai Event Management Services), and a designer jacket from Barkha-N-Sonzal. Because the Mumbai Xpress had a participating team of three members, three designer jackets were initially made. However, as only a two-person team won, an extra jacket remained.

By request of the Barkha-N-Sonzal, the jacket will be auctioned off on eBay and proceeds will be donated to Aseema.

Barkha and Sonzal, two women from South Mumbai and the namesakes of their company, design traditional and Western-style clothing and accessories exclusively for men. Despite their new label, Barkha-N-Sonzal has designed clothing for many celebrities, including pianist Richard Clayderman, Rahul Sharma, and several Bollywood icons.

Aseema, an award-winning education center designed to provide underprivileged children with a nurturing and stimulating educational environment, will use the funds raised by the auction for a variety of efforts that will invariably support their mission.
