Tour d’Afrique Riders Go for Gold: Pedaling the Length of Africa Raises Donations for Humanitarian Concerns

By pedaling the length of Africa from Cairo to Cape Town with Tour d’Afrique, cyclists raise money for favorite humanitarian causes and charities. Over $1 million raised since July 2009.

TORONTO, Feb. 25, 2010 – By pedaling the length of Africa, cyclists raise money for humanitarian causes targeted by Tour d’Afrique (http://www.tourdafrique.com/) while traversing thousands of miles over upwards of four months.

As of July 2009, a total of $1 million has been raised by committed cyclists on past and present tours. Many are participating in the January 16-May 15, 2010 Tour d’Afrique race and expedition happening now that spans 7,500 miles from Cairo to Cape Town.

“We’re blessed with some incredible riders who have used their adventure cycling across Africa to raise money for a number of charities and NGOs,” said Henry Gold, founder of Toronto-based Tour d’Afrique, a small, socially responsible bike tour company with huge intentions. Gold, who has been staging international trans-continental cycling tours and races since 2003, now inspires cyclists from over 15 different countries to take on such life-changing challenges.

From Lawrence, KS, Jason Becker, a former teacher and now freelance artist and designer, is pedaling for Project Rwanda (http://projectrwanda.org/) founded by bike builder Tom Ritchey. This project funds custom ‘coffee bikes’ for the coffee farmers and replaces older wooden bikes.

From Alberta, Canada, Stephanie Sleen, a wilderness guide, focuses on the Suncatchers Project (www.suncatchersproject.org) a non-profit that builds solar ovens for remote rural communities in Africa.

Rick Wafsky who grew up in Alexandria, VA., but now lives and works in Calgary, believes like Lance Armstrong in the power of living every minute of life with every ounce of one’s being. Ambleside Guest House Walkers Safe with Langdale Rescue Team on Hand

 The Old Vicarage is a beautiful Ambleside Guest House conveniently located in Ambleside which is where the Langdale Mountain Rescue Team are also based.  This gives the residents that are keen walkers a reassuring piece of mind when they venture out onto the mountains and fells of the Lake District.  The service has been in action for many years, even decades.  Records date back to 1930 from when people were interviewed about walkers disappearing into the hills and never returning.

In those days of course the service was somewhat limited in comparison to nowadays.  The rescuers were predominantly farmers or anyone else that was nearby and had time to help.  Understandably the equipment was limited, there are even records of five bar iron gates that were used as stretchers to carry the injured off the mountains.

In the 1950’s there was a large increase in the amount of people that were interested in rock climbing and so the sport really took off, which meant the mountain rescue service was an absolute necessity as opposed to just being there to help out occasionally.  The amount of call outs increased and were spreading their wings from Langdale to the Ambleside area as well.  As the fifties saw an increase in climbers, the sixties saw an increase in the amount of walkers as tourism boomed in the Lakes.  However, walkers were not as experienced and this was clear as so many were coming to bother in the hills, getting lost, falling off crags, breaking bones, getting lost, having heart attacks and being struck down with hypothermia.

The Ambleside Guest Houses accommodate many of these walkers and mountaineers and use the town as a base and starting point for their walks.  The Old Vicarage, Guest House Ambleside itself is located at the end of Lake Windermere which is at the bottom of the tremendous fells.  There are walks for all capabilities, ranging from shorter, lower level walks which are suitable for all abilities to the more serious walks or hikes.  Perfect places close to the Ambleside bed and breakfast are Red Screes, Sweden bridge, Pike of Blisco or Great Langdale.  Those enjoying gentle lower strolls can also stop off in many of the tearooms and pubs for a much needed touch of refreshment.

Staff at The Old Vicarage only ask that when you head out onto the fells that you are fully equipped for your trip, in good health and that you let them know where you are heading.  They also always state that the fells are “not ours, but ours to look after”.

Warrington Country Club has been awarded 3rd place in the Bucks Beautiful Garden Competition in the Business Gardens Category.  This was Warrington Country Club’s first entry into this competition.

The Bucks Beautiful Award is part of an initiative to encourage the ‘Greening of Bucks County’.  The gardens are judged by a group of regional experts, established gardeners or professionals.  The gardens are visited by a team of judges giving their opinions both on a numerical criteria as well as written comments to provide helpful suggestions.  The gardens are then judged based on design, installation and maintenance.

Childhood Obesity Kills Native Americans, says Dr. Sharma’s blog

The blog post reads as, “Despite the wide-spread concern about the health impact of the childhood obesity epidemic, there is actually not much data that directly shows how this excess weight may affect mortality.

Such data is now available at least for native American kids, from a study by Paul Franks (National Institutes of Health, Phoenix, AZ) and colleagues, just published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The researchers analysed data from a cohort of 4857 American Indian (Pima or Tohono O’odham Indian) children without diabetes (mean age, 11.3 years) born between 1945 and 1984.

During a median follow-up period of around 24 years, death rates from endogenous causes among children in the highest quartile of BMI were more than double those among children in the lowest BMI quartile.

Similarly, rates of death from endogenous causes among children in the highest quartile of glucose intolerance were 73% higher than those among children in the lowest quartile and childhood hypertension was significantly associated with a 60% increased risk of premature death from endogenous causes.

Thus, at least in native Americans, childhood obesity is a significant risk factor for premature death – certainly a warning for those who believe that early obesity is something you can simply grow out of.

Given the raging epidemic of childhood obesity amongst the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis populations in Canada, these data should certainly prompt decisive action to address obesity amongst its native peoples.”

Jean Vanier high school students big winners in Toronto AutoShow skills competition

TORONTO, Feb. 16 – Two automotive tech students from Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School in Scarborough beat out 19 other Toronto-area high school teams to win a unique skills competition that challenged students’ technical knowledge at the Canadian International AutoShow today.

Automotive schools possess qualified trainers to enhance the practical and theoretical knowledge of institute and provide to their students with appropriate equipments, time, space and more as a usage facilities. These we have fabulously observed in the students of Jean Vanier Catholic School at the organized competition.

James Bachiller and John Gonsalves performed a number of timed technical tasks and attempted to start a 2010 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible that had been rigged with a no-start condition by automotive instructors from Centennial College. By finishing first, the pair will be representing Canada at the National Automotive Technology Competition in New York City in April.

Automotive Training Instructors at Centennial College make their students vigorously engross in their technical project to have a drastic result in a short period of time. Automotive training facilities allow the students to develop new innovative ideas for the assigned projects and thereby develop dynamic skills.

Toronto’s Danforth Tech finished second, thanks to the efforts of students Cameron Elpkick and Tauriq Shaikh, while Central Tech earned third place, represented by Jonathan Bagni and Michael Mallette. In addition to the all-expenses-paid trip, Bachiller and Gonsalves received a trophy and equipment from sponsors.

The top two schools are winners, too. Their automotive tech shops will take delivery of a General Motors vehicle, which will be used for technical training. General Motors of Canada generously donated two brand-new vehicles as prizes. .

This was the 11th year for the contest, organized by Centennial College, which promotes automotive technology as a rewarding career path. Last year’s winners from Northview Heights Secondary School placed second in New York City, while a team from Central Tech beat all of the U.S. teams and collected prizes worth $250,000 in 2008.

The Toronto skills contest enjoys outstanding support from the industry. Worsley Arms Hotel Set in Beautiful North York Moors Village

The Worsley Arms Hotel is located in the picturesque and beautiful village of Hovingham; this is located perfectly for the surrounding villages and towns of Pickering, Helmsley, Stokesley, Malton and Thirsk.  Like many North York Moors Hotels the Worsley Arms Hotel is nestled in the scenic National Park which attracts tourists in their droves year after year.

The market towns of Pickering, Malton, Stokesley, Thirsk and Helmsley are all located in the North York Moors National Park which is home to one of the biggest areas of heather moorland in the United Kingdom.  It has a population of approximately 25,000 and it was in 1952 that it becamea National Park through the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act of 1949.  The area is vast and covers around 554 square miles which equates to 1,436 km squared.

The village of Hovingham is fairly large and very beautiful.  It is set within the Ryedale parish and is located just on the edge of the Howardian Hills which are another attraction for visitors to the Hotels North Yorkshire.  The Worsley family have lived in Hovingham since 1563 and the current Hovingham Hall which is a Grade 1 listed building was built by the 6th Thomas Worsley.

Stokesley is also not far away from The Worsley Arms Hotel, this is another beautiful market town which is home to approximately five and a half thousand people.  It lies just north of the North York Moors but is easily accessible with the convenient and efficient bus service; this is called the Moorbus Network.  Interestingly, it is only 12 miles from the North Sea.  The first Saturday of every month hosts a farmer’s market which attractions locals and tourists alike.  In addition there is also an agricultural show in September which again reinforces the strong farming heritage of the area.  The show is huge in the village, it dates back to 1859 and a fair comes to visit Stokesley for the week leading up to the show which again attracts people from all over the area.

Pickering is also located on the edge of the North York Moors National Park and it is nestled within the Vale of Pickering.  The town hosts a market day every Monday and there is also a farmer’s market on the first Thursday of every month.  Pickering has an award winning tourist information centre which is well worth a visit as hidden gems can be pointed out by the knowledgeable staff to keep visitors informed of what is on in the area.

Helmsley is also a market town, which in the 17th century was the centre for weaving.  There is a history to the loom operators and they had a reputation for being heavy drinkers which usually ended in mass, public brawls.  Helmsley is also so popular as it is used as a starting point for those people wishing to walk The Cleveland Way which is a well know walk across the North York Moors National Park which is over 100 miles long.  Visitors can enjoy many quaint tearooms and traditional country pubs and many motor cyclists like to start or end their journeys here.
