A Somber Reminder of the Past – The Alfred P. Murrah Site

November 2nd, 2009

One of the most important destinations to visit in Oklahoma City is the site of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building that was bombed on April 12, 1995. The site, now the Oklahoma City National Memorial, reminds visitors of the tragedy that took the lives of many and left an indelible mark on their loved ones.

The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building housed 550 employees as well as a daycare center. Built in 1977 at a cost of $14.5 million, the building was named after federal judge and Oklahoma native, Alfred P. Murrah. This United States Federal Government Complex was home to the regional offices of the Social Security Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the recruiting offices of the Army and Marine Corps. The building’s remains were imploded a month following the bombing. The Oklahoma City National Memorial was later created on the site.
