Alfa Romeo Leads Sydney to Hobart

New Zealand maxi Alfa Romeo is leading the fleet down Tasmania’s east coast in the Sydney to Hobart. She is challenging for race line honours and handicap double. Her captain Neville Crichton extended their lead overnight to 27 nautical miles. Another maxi – ICAP Leopard, is currently 2nd and Wild Oats XI in 3rd place. But a wind lull means Alfa Romeo has slowed down and her competitors are closing the gap. Her navigator said their aim is to be the first boat out, cross at the narrowest point and hope to make big gains on the way out. The yacht is expected to finish the race late tonight. Most of the remaining boats have only just started to make their way into the Bass Strait and the battle is now on for 4th place as there are 5 yachts all within sight of each other.
