Camp Sagemont in Broward County offers a new drama camp, art camp & science camp and the creative juices are flowing…
July 7th, 2009Camp Sagemont added a drama camp, art camp and science camp to its offerings this summer. Students are painting like Van Gogh, acting like Marcelle Marceau and blowing up pint size volcanoes plus enjoying fun in the sun each day.
School’s out for summer and the fun has begun at Camp Sagemont a respected day camp in Broward County. This year kids can choose from three new specialty camps including art, drama and science each offered for one four week session.
The Art Camp exposed campers to many types of artistic styles, media, and processes. The kids learned about tie-dying and linoleum block printing to cloisonné jewelry making and Russian architecture. In addition to hands on projects, campers enjoyed weekly field trips to the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, Morikami Japanese Museum and Gardens, Art and Culture Center of Hollywood and the Norton Art Museum.
“My goal for this program was to not only expose students to a wide range of media and art types, but to also help the students push themselves creatively and acquire a greater artistic foundation that they can build upon as they grow as artists,” said Lauren Tubbs, Coordinator of the Summer Art Camp.
The art camp helped the drama camp with their backdrops for the drama presentation which included scenes from Seussical, Annie, and Alice in Wonderland.
A love of the theater is what inspired camper Erica Merlino to register for Sagemont’s Drama Camp. “I wanted to come to Drama Camp because this year I was in our school musical and I loved it…I want to continue performing!”
Campers learned all aspects of theater including film acting, improvisation, choreography, set design and make up. They also enjoyed weekly field trips to watch live theater performances. . “My goal for this program was to enable students to not only enhance their acting styles, but to gain an appreciation for all aspects of the theater, both on and off the stage,” said Asha Ramcharitar, Coordinator of the Summer Drama Camp.
Children enrolled in Science camp will have a chance to learn about the Everglades, Marine life, Solar System and Chemistry. Bill Simmons, known to campers as Mr. Bill, says his goal is to show children that science can be fun. “I love to see kids get excited about science. That is what keeps me excited about science.” The campers will perform various hands on experiments to learn about the above-mentioned subjects.
Although the Art, Drama and Science Camps are new this summer, Sagemont’s ever popular Sports Camp is back in full swing. Sports enthusiasts will spend their days playing a variety of different sports as well as enjoying field trips to places such as Rapids Water Park, bowling and a Florida Marlins game.
Campers enrolled in any of the specialty camps will also enjoy computers, swimming and the video arcade. Campers will also participate in the annual tradition of color war which includes many competitions, games and activities. Camp Sagemont will close out the fun filled summer with a carnival. From August 3-14, there will be two weeks of mini-camp available which will be a help to many working parents looking for additional summer programming.
