Books In Sync Recognizes Dead Of Knight By Award Winning Author William R. Potter

February 21st, 2010

DEAD of KNIGHT Is A Jack Staal Mystery:

Your next birthday could be murder!

Believing he is a soldier of justice, a misguided young man begins a callous campaign of terror murdering women on their birthdays. Convinced of his righteousness he continues his brutal crusade forcing the citizens of Hanson B.C. to acknowledge a serial killer active in their rural community.

The Mounties always get their man…but not if Jack Staal gets him first!

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police put their Integrated Homicide Investigation Teams into action. Detective Jack Staal and the rest of Hanson PD are invited to support the RCMP. However, Staal, the once elite major-crime investigator reduced to small-town detective is desperate for redemption. He ignores protocol to work a case that is not his to solve.

Told from the perspective of both killer and cop DEAD of KNIGHT is a cat and mouse thriller sure to delight fans of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta or Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch.

The First Review:

Author William R. Potter takes the reader into the heart and soul of his protagonist and into the warped mind of a psychopath. Potter’s first full length novel, Dead of Knight is told from the point-of-view of Detective Jack Staal and from the perspective of a killer who murders women on their birthdays.

Through clever use of back story, we learn that Detective Staal is suffering from post-traumatic stress after a horrific shooting. Unable to shake the horror of that day, Staal has left his position with the Vancouver PD’s homicide squad and has resurrected his career with the police service in a fictional country town called Hanson, British Columbia.

Anxious to work the biggest case of his career, Staal is forced to the outside when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Integrated Homicide Teams are assigned to the case. Not one to sit on the sidelines, Staal convinces his colleagues to follow his lead and pursue a serial killer the media has dubbed Birthday Boy.

Believing he is a soldier of justice, a misguided young man has begun a callous campaign of terror. Damian Knight (Birthday Boy) is convinced of his righteousness and continues his brutal crusade of revenge. As his death count mounts, so does Knight’s courage and he soon turns his anger on a fatigued Staal. Staal and Knight play out a cat and mouse thrill ride that culminates with an epic, one-on-one meeting of cop versus killer.

Potter has created an intriguing police procedural with a strong main character, a terrific supporting cast, and a plot with twists, turns, and plenty of red herrings. I have read many books in this genre featuring a main character that is a bullet-proof, womanizing Neanderthal. However, Potter’s Jack Staal takes a pounding, both physically and emotionally. This is one author who isn’t afraid to show his hero breaking down or making mistakes. Potter has penned a captivating tale filled with plenty of tension and conflict, crisp dialogue and an unrelenting pace. He puts us in the story with vivid descriptions and scene-painting narrative.

I highly recommend Dead of Knight -A Jack Staal Mystery. It is sure to delight fans of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta or Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch.

Books In Sync Recognizes Author Carole M. Lidgold

February 16th, 2010

Author Carole M. Lidgold (nee Thomas) was born in Toronto, is married, mother of two, grandmother of two, and attended Winston Churchill High School in Scarborough. She inherited her voice from her grandfather and father, and has sung in The Canada Life Choralaires, various church choirs and has been a member of the Serenata Singers for eleven years. Carole is the author of The History of The Guild Inn and has eight other self-published books. She tried politics but lost out and has since worked as a secretary, currently retired as a church secretary.

Featuring: Birds On My Brush by Carole M. Lidgold – In April 1763, unknown artist and naturalist, Elizabeth (nee Symonds) Gwillim was born in England. She accompanied her husband, Henry, to Madras, India, in the 1800s, where she died in 1807. In London, England, in 1924, a Dr. Casey Wood, surgeon and ornithologist, discovered in an ‘out of the way shop of arts’, Elizabeth Gwillim’s watercolour paintings. Today, 2009, these painting, painted two decades before Audubon published his illustrious Birds of America, are part of the Blacker-Wood collection of Zoology and Natural History, at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec. Prints of several of her painting of India’s birds are included in this novel.

About The Story: Birds On My Brush is a novel based on the few known facts of the life and untimely death of Elizabeth Gwillim. My character, Sarah Purcell, was born in the spring when birds were chirping the birth of their new offspring. As a child, and later as and adult, Sarah was obsessed with sketching precise details of the birds. She married William Cantwell, a barrister determined to live in the land of his boyhood hero, Robert Clive, and English hero in India’s development. Sarah’s younger sister, Rose Purcell, accompanied them on this journey. Rose’s tortured dream of death in India hampered her enjoyment of this new life.

Birds on My Brush Book Review: A compelling account of an unknown artist’s life!

The life and times of 18th-century wildlife artist Elizabeth Gwillim are shrouded in mystery and uncertainty. She was born in England in 1763 and moved to India with her husband in the early 1800s, where she worked diligently to perfect her art.

She never achieved public recognition in her lifetime and she died, an obscure, undiscovered artist, in her mid-40s; it appeared, for the longest time, as though her art may have gone to the grave with her.

Nearly two centuries later, Gwillim’s wildlife watercolours were “discovered” in a London, England art shop. Today, in death, Gwillim has achieved what she could not in life; her wildlife art, notably her precision sketches of birds, has been widely praised as among the finest of its era. Gwillim’s work now forms part of the Blacker-Wood Collection of Zoology and Natural History at McGill University in Montreal, one of Canada’s pre-eminent schools of higher learning.

Carole M. Lidgold, a Canadian writer fascinated with Gwillim’s life and art, has painted a fascinating portrait of Gwillim’s life in her new, fact-based fictional novel entitled Birds on My Brush. Lidgold has taken what is known of Gwillim’s history and has built around the edges, crafting a fully-realized novel from the sketchy framework of Gwillim’s remarkable life.

She has created a lead character, Sarah Purcell, utilizing the Purcell character as a standin for Gwillim, and producing a sweeping, engrossing tale that lovers of art and history will find both hugely enjoyable and dramatically memorable.

The story covers the artist’s life from the early years in England, through the productive artistic period in India, to the point of the artist’s comparatively early death. Along the way, this much is made very clear: author Lidgold’s fascination with Gwillim’s life and artwork shines brightly throughout the novel’s 280 pages. A particular bonus for readers is that Birds on My Brush offers up not only some factual context of the details of Gwillim’s life, but also some representative samples of her artistic work.

Lidgold is an accomplished writer, whose stories typically brim with life and vitality. Birds on My Brush offers something beyond that – an historic and artistic integrity that takes readers well back in time to contemplate the challenging life of an artist who produced first-rate work, but couldn’t break out from the prison of artistic obscurity.

The novel is a well-constructed triumph. It is a triumph that the artist herself could imagine only in her dreams.

Gone Away Into The Land by Jeffrey B. Allen

February 6th, 2010

by Jeffrey B. Allen

The dust jacket text for Gone Away Into the Land promises an epic fantasy adventure. I can tell you that this is one novel that exceeds expectations. Author Jeffrey B. Allen takes the reader on an adventure that will leave you thinking about the story long after you close the final page.

We meet our protagonist, twelve-year-old John Gerber. John’s life is not that of an average pre-teen-not even close. John, his mother Ellie, and his sister Marny live in constant, paralyzing fear of John’s father, Daniel. Daniel, or the beast as John calls him, is an extremely volatile man whose rage could explode on his family at any moment-and explode it does. John dreams of ending the beast’s reign of terror, of taking his family away before it is too late. The first fifty pages of Part 1 are no fantasy as the author describes in vivid, shocking detail Daniel’s unpredictable fury and a horrible example of violent abuse, as the beast leaves John and Ellie beaten and bloodied and kidnaps six-year-old Marny.

With the help of a mysterious taxi driver, John and Ellie begin their search for Marny. This is where the fantasy starts as it is believed that Marny is somewhere in the candy factory where Daniel was employed. Soon John and his mother are aboard a train in an amazing land called ZingZongLand. ZZL is a place that is all about creating the best tasting candy. The leader of the land is called KyaSiftar. The Siftar’s main rival is the minister of Southland province named Mengus. Desperate for power, Mengus has his sights set on dominating the land and controlling the new flavor creations. Mengus recruits the beast to aid in his conquest of the Land. He believes that gaining control in the Land is the key to overthrowing the World as well.

Jeffrey B. Allen showcases his considerable imagination and writing talent in creating an entire universe. His lead is a believable, lovable character with which readers young and old will quickly bond. The villains are wonderfully horrible and easy to loathe, without overshadowing the hero. The secondary characters are interesting, fresh and well drawn. The dialogue is crisp and clear and well suited to the vast variety of creatures and peoples. Allen slowly reveals his characters’ secrets along the way, keeping the reader captivated throughout. He wastes none of these nearly 500 pages, using suspense and vibrant description to keep the pages turning. He brings all the players together in a David versus Goliath-type showdown for the ages that will have you rooting for John to the end.

Gone Away is building momentum, was recently picked up by a major publisher and was accepted in several school libraries. I believe it will become the next time-tested classic fantasy tale, universally adored and mentioned in the same breath as The Wizard of Oz, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Lord of The Rings. I highly recommend this thought-provoking, entertaining read.

Goodbye Kiev by author Thomas C. Almond

January 24th, 2010

Finding that special someone to share a life with is a struggle for many. Goodbye Kiev by author Thomas C. Almond is his fictionalized recounting of how he found the woman of his dreams in the Ukraine through a marriage agency, and the challenges he faced in their relationship.

Tom is a 27-year veteran of Portland Fire and Rescue. He is divorced and lonely. He is a serious man who knows what he wants and how to get it. Nothing will stop him from finding love and a lasting relationship. Through the agency, he begins corresponding with a young woman named Lyubov in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. The months pass and both Tom and Lyubov are eager to meet. It is decided that they will meet in Kiev, Ukraine and that Lyubov will bring her son, Sasha. The visit goes by quickly and smoothly. Despite his Russian being less developed than he would have liked, and Lyubov speaking little English, by the end of this first visit, Tom is sure that he is very much in love with the beautiful Lyubov. He pops the question and Lyubov says yes. Another visit is planned for the summer and Tom flies home for the States. He is happy and in love and anxious to live as a family with Lyubov and Sasha in Oregon.

Shortly after his journey home, he receives an amazing letter from Lyubov telling him how much she loves him and how wonderful he is. But all is not perfect as Tom begins to notice that her messages take longer and longer to arrive. Then a shocking letter from Lyubov shakes his faith in his feelings for her. She says she doesn’t think she loves Tom, she doesn’t believe he truly loves her, and she suggests that he would be happier with another. Tom can’t understand this abrupt change. All Lyubov will say is that she doesn’t want to burden Tom with her problems.

Tom plans another trip to Ukraine even though he isn’t sure Lyubov will see him. He flies to her hometown in hopes of discovering what the real problem is. He spends week after week alone and waiting for her to agree to meet him. He is patient but his patience is growing very short. Will his perseverance pay off or will he ultimately go home broken-hearted and alone?

Mr. Almond writes from his heart. Like few male authors I have read, he isn’t afraid to examine and express his feelings. This is an intriguing tale of love and commitment. I found myself cheering for Tom, hoping he would get Lyubov to lower her defenses, to save the relationship. In my opinion, the book stalls a bit at Chapter 6, “The Journal Home,” in which the events of the first five chapters are summarized. However, Almond quickly gets back on track pushing the story forward to the climax.

This isn’t a fairytale romance. It is a poignant, realistic tale of one man’s quest for love. The ending is powerful, emotional, and one you will not soon forget. I recommended Goodbye Kiev.

Armin Brott, America’s Most Trusted Dad, awards Live Consciously Publishing’s latest title, Your Legacy of Love: Realize the Gift in Goodbye his coveted Seal of Approval in the 2009/2010 Holiday Awards category.

Live Consciously Publishing received substantial industry recognition for this, it’s first book, by British grief expert Gemini Adams, when it became an Award-Winning finalist in the 2009 National Best Book Awards last month.

America’s Most Trusted Dad, Armin Brott, commented on the value of Your Legacy of Love:Realize the Gift in Goodbye to parents, saying: “This is a meaningful book for dads. As we think about how to communicate values to our kids, we must appreciate that unforeseeable disasters can happen. We liked this approach to creating a message for the kids, even in the horrible event that they don’t have their dad around to teach them life lessons as they get older.”

Mr. Brott, otherwise known for MrDad.com, his informative website, radio show and numerous books on parenting, awarded the book the Seal of Approval on the basis that this product improves the quality of father-child relationships and helps dads to stay involved with their kids. Author, Gemini Adams, said: “I’m so pleased the book received this award because it will help dads understand the value of their eomotional assets over their financial assets, and how by leaving these in a Legacy of Love, they can preserve the relationship and share life lessons with their children, long after they are gone.”

Three Trailers Down by Douglas Chandler Graham

Three Trailers Down - by Douglas Chandler Graham2

Having reviewed the prequel to this book called Smoke and Murders (March 2009), I was pleased to have a chance to read and review Three Trailers Down. The prequel fictionalized the true story of the Hodges family, brutally murdered in Vinton, Virginia in 1994. Three Trailers Down picks up the story in the months following the conviction of Adam Bracket for the slayings.

Author Douglas Chandler Graham spends the first dozen or so chapters introducing us to new characters and reacquainting us with a few from Smoke. There is no clear protagonist or villain as this is truly an ensemble cast of intriguing, well-developed players.

We return to small town Virginia near Vineyard, a resort town called Bondurant where the Bondurant family serve only the wealthy elite in the Bondurant Lodge. Some twenty years previous, a hit man killed three people there, and sixteen year-old Amanda Bondurant ran away, never to be seen or heard from again.

From the well-to-do of the Lodge, we visit Newberry Suggs and his rundown trailer park. Despite the reputation of trailer parks and the people who reside in them, Suggs does his best to keep respectable tenants in and the police out.

Vineyard Police Lieutenant Bill Kenny has just been fired after years of illegal and corrupt practises. After the suspicious death of his wife, he finds his way to Bondurant Lodge for the possibility of work. State police inspector, Bernard “Bear” McNutt, the cop responsible for the arrest and conviction of Adam Brackett in the prequel, is investigating the death of Bill’s wife, Camilla Kenny.

This book could have easily been called Sex and Murder, as so many of the players are either sleeping with someone or killing them. Bill Kenny is hired to find Amanda Bondurant and her jealous husband is set on finding her as well. A restaurateur with mob connections puts a hit man on Kenny’s tail. All the players make their way to the Suggs Mobile Home Village where Amanda has been in hiding as she considers contacting her nearby family.

Author Graham sets us up for a gripping climax at the trailer park and doesn’t disappoint. He uses tension, conflict, realistic dialogue and a captivating collection of unique characters to weave an entertaining and satisfying, quick read. I recommend Three Trailers Down. If you enjoyed Smoke and Murders you won’t want to miss the exciting conclusion.

Spirituality Expert Reece Manley Finishes Crossing Twice Seminar Series for IANDS Group

November 26th, 2009

Spirituality expert Reece Manley has finished a seminar series on his award-winning book Crossing Twice: Answers from the Source due out for presentation for the first time in February announced Advocate USA Publishing.

Dallas, Texas – November 27, 2009 — Spirituality expert Reece Manley has finished a seminar series on his award-winning book Crossing Twice: Answers from the Source due out for presentation for the first time in February announced Advocate USA Publishing.  The Crossing Twice Seminar Series has been developed in preparation for the February presentation scheduled for the Virginia chapter of the International Association of Near Death Studies.

“I was unable to speak at the IANDS national conference in October as the series was unfinished.  However, I am pleased to be able to bring the Crossing Twice Seminar Series to interested groups nationwide beginning in February 2010,” says spirituality expert and progressive Christian writer Dr. Reece Manley, DD, M.Ed., MPM.  “Certainly I knew my life would change after my near death experience and spiritually transformative experience in 2008, but I never knew it would result in three books and two different seminar series.  America is hungry for spirituality.  We want to know not only what happens when we die but what we could be doing to live more fully.  The Crossing Twice and Spirit Thinking Seminar Series answers these needs.”

The Crossing Twice Seminar will concentrate on delivering a discussion of the death and crossing experience as Dr. Manley went from life to death and on to joining the heavens.  Specifically, the experience and the ability to recreate the closeness to our spirituality that comes when the body and mind are less focused on and the spirit self is more closely observed.

The Spirit Thinking Series is a progressive Christian living seminar series which teaches people to challenge old thinking patterns with specific spiritual principles.  Top psychiatrist and Fellow of the American Psychiatric Board, Dr. Bernard Dolenz, MD, PhD, JD, has given an official endorsement of Dr. Manley’s works.  “There is no one doing more brilliant work than Dr. Manley,” says Dr. Dolenz.

Crossing Twice: Answers from the Source is available from the Advocate USA Publishing or can easilybe found on Amazon. Spirit Thinking: Your 30 Day Guide to Enlightenment may also be found on the sites.  The third title, Spiritual Recovery: Seven Steps to Freedom, is due out in 2010.  The Spirit Thinking site is located at www.SpiritThinking.net.

Crossing Twice: Answers from the Source Continues to Gather Five Star Reviews

November 11th, 2009

Crossing Twice: Answers from the Source continues to make rounds to major publishers while gathering incredible reviews.

Dallas, Texas November 11, 2009 — Near death experience tale and life recount of Reece W. Manley received another five stars today from Pacific Book Reviews.  This brings its top ranking reviews garnered to an amazing number from Amazon to Kirkus, reviewers are in love with the book.

“It’s a natural story to feel passionate about,” says Rick Setter, Advocate USA Publishing.

“The story contains a vivid description of the death experience taking the reader from the beginnings of passing all the way through the amazing joining of the heavenly hosts.  Of course, Reece came back when he was revived by hospital staff and perhaps that is where the story becomes most incredible because it becomes most human.”

Crossing Twice in addition to describing the near death experience in terms of vivid, compassionate and comforting details recounts the author’s life in the harshness of reality.  The author becomes a hero in  his fighting through recovery of child abuse, depression and a neurological disease which leaves him in chronic severe pain.  But rather than giving into the challenges, the author’s near death experience causes hi m to soar above them.

“A nice surprise for the reader comes in the straightforward, easy to read and humorous writing style of the author,” says one recent review given by Pacific Book Reviews.  “I try to write in a style close to how I speak.  Humor is such a necessary component to anything human.  I had to incorporate some of it in this serious work just so it would be my story,” says Dr. Reece W. Manley, DD, M.Ed., MPM.

Crossing Twice: Answers from the Source continues to make rounds to major publishers while gathering incredible reviews. Readers interested in the work may find it on Amazon or may decide to take advantage of Advocate USA Publishing direct prices at www.reecemanley.com/ctorder.aspx .

The program has been proven to be effective in reducing depression, anxiety, PTSD and addiction disorders.  In addition, it is a great way to increase self image and self-esteem. “

Christianity Today recently laid off 31 workers and closed four publications in June of 2009.  The management team is scrambling to shore up the CTI flagships such as Christianity Today.  The offer from Advocate USA Publishing comes had a fortuitous time.

“We are newly established and newly funded,” says Setter, “We can afford to make such an offer because the strength of the remaining CTI is rich in the progressive Christian readers our works are designed to attract.”  More comments can be had from Rick Setter at info@advocateusa.net or 1-800-936-0812.

The author, Reece W. Manley, DD, M.Ed., MPM, reports as being completely satisfied with the terms of the offer.  Christianity Today did not immediately return calls to comment.

TheEbookSale Publishing Newsletter Hits the 10,000 Subscriber Milestone 18 Months After Release

October 25th, 2009

TheEbookSale newsletter hits the 10,000 subscriber milestone.

Limerick, Ireland, October 21, 2009 — TheEbookSale Publishing, an Irish based eBook Publishing company, harnessed the power of email marketing 18 months ago. Since then, the subscriber list has hit 10,000.

Company President, Richie O’Brien, is delighted with the announcement and thinks that “This is a significant milestone for our publishing house”, and acknowledges that “email marketing and newsletters are fundamental to the success of any online business”.

So what are newsletters and why are they good for business?
A newsletter is a regularly distributed publication generally about one main topic that is of interest to its subscribers. Newsletters delivered electronically via email (e-Newsletters or eZines) have gained rapid acceptance for the same reasons email in general is gaining popularity over printed correspondence. They are published by businesses and companies to provide information of interest, upcoming events and company news to their members, customers or subscribers.

It is planned that our ebook newsletter will also be fully compatible with smartphones by our next issue later this October. “A higher percentage of subscriber use iPhones, Blackberry and other smartphones to surf the web, read emails and newsletters nowadays” states Richie, and if you do not stay abreast with the latest trends, your subscriber list will begin to suffer.

There are so many factors that can help or hinder the success of a newsletter. It’s important to use a short, simple and clean layout where you get to the point quickly. Remember, the newsletter is not just about you, it’s also about your subscribers. Get to know who shops in your store or needs your services and then tailor the newsletter to your clients and what they want. Mr. O’Brien adds that you must “write to express, not to impress” and that asking your subscribers for feedback is fundamental to understanding the needs that must be satisfied.

Delving into the backend of newsletter publishing is also very important. Analysis of delivery reports, tracking and geo-tagging can tell much about the strengths and weaknesses of the newsletter campaign. It will help to maximize subscriber pickup and more important, it will minimize the unsubscribe count.
To conclude, publish regularly and provide ‘Contagious Content’ to keep the loyal subscribers happy and to impress new subscribers so that they will hit that ‘forward to a friend’ button.

Peace in the Storm by Deirdre Kelley is a Story of Divorce from a Drug Addicted and Abusive Spouse

October 19th, 2009

Peace in the Storm by author Deirdre Kelley tells the often traumatic story of divorce from a drug addicted and abusive spouse. We meet Amy Alexander as she walks away from the courthouse and the battle to save her marriage. She is free of the violence and fear of her husband, Brandon. However she can’t help worrying about her future and whether she is strong enough to make it on her own and take care of her two sons.

Over the next several chapters we learn about how Amy’s children deal with an absent father and their memories of how Brandon hurt their mother mentally and physically. Fifteen-year-old Marshall seems to be the perfect son and student; hard working, mature, understanding, a good Christian teen. He steps into his new role as man of the house and is glad his mother no longer has to endure the bruises and the fighting. Like most seven-year-olds, Sean loves video games and playing with his friends. He struggles with the belief that since his father doesn’t visit, and yelled at him for no reason, that his father must hate him.

Peace in the Storm is well written with good character development and believable dialogue. Deirdre Kelley does a good job showing the stress and fear involved when dealing with a violent, unpredictable ex-husband. She also draws a clear picture of the joy of a new beginning, of rebuilding and reaching out to help others. Throughout her struggles, Amy discovers a great strength in prayer and the new friends she makes along the way. Just when you think the Alexander family will be okay, Brandon begins harassing and threatening the family for money to support his and his girlfriend’s drug habit, culminating with Sean’s disappearance one day after school.

Peace in the Storm is a wonderful work of Christian fiction. I understand that in difficult times, many people lean on their faith for direction. However, I occasionally felt the religious passages pulled me from this otherwise interesting story. I recommend Peace in the Storm to those who enjoy stories of faith-inspired strength and survival. I hope to read more from Deirdre Kelley.

The Saga of Peter the Woodsman by A. Hansley Jr. is a Classic Tale of Myth and Magic

October 19th, 2009

The Saga of Peter the Woodsman by A. Hansley Jr. is a classic tale of myth and magic, sword and sorcery. We first meet siblings Alex and Wes in modern times, taking the bus home from school. When a strange hooded figure boards and leads the bus in the wrong direction, they immediately jump off. Lost and cold in dark woods, they seek shelter from a sudden intense storm. At the only cottage they find, an old man takes them in and begins telling an incredible epic story that lasts all night and takes them into another world.

Peter is a simple woodsman, hard-working like his father and grandfather before him. One day while walking with his mule, Peter meets a spirit named Dualla. The spirit brings Peter to Helicon, the mount of light. Peter realizes that in Helicon, his mule becomes a mighty stallion, and his axe radiates with magic as though filled with pure energy. Peter, too, is transformed. He meets Calliope, muse of inspiration, and her spirit guards. Calliope welcomes Peter, but calls him Pendragon.

A wise and powerful wizard named Mystagog tells Peter why the spirits have given him total power and the title of Pendragon the Champion. In return, Peter is asked to join their fight against the forces of evil. The dark forces are lead by Lord Evil the First, and his servant wizard, Myrmadon.

Many battles over many centuries ensue as Peter repeatedly answers the call to serve and defend Helicon as its champion. Lord Evil’s capacity for cruelty seems endless. Evil is stopped by Peter but is not defeated, as Evil’s campaign to destroy him, along with the nine sister muses, and Helicon rages for millennia.

Author A. Hansley Jr. has written a captivating tale with an intriguing plot filled with plenty of tension and conflict, wonderful character development, crisp dialogue and an unrelenting pace. He puts us right there, too, with vivid sensory descriptions and strong, scene-setting narrative.

Will Peter defeat Lord Evil at long last and end Evil’s reign-of-terror and destruction? Or will the Woodsman ultimately fail the people of Helicon? And what part do Alex and Wes play in the final battle of good versus evil? You’ll have to read it to find out.

Geared to the 8-14 set, The Saga of Peter the Woodsman will be loved by young readers. A. Hansley Jr.’s writing talent and vast knowledge and use of Greek mythology will also keep even the most sophisticated adult reader enthralled.

Someone Stop This Merry-Go-Round: An Alcoholic Family in Crisis

October 4th, 2009

Many of us have had a spouse or family member arrive home after a few too many drinks. Some of us have needed to make up excuses for a loved one’s occasional over-drinking. Imagine if this was a daily occurrence. Waiting, worrying, and watching the clock, wondering when, and in what state, a spouse would finally come home, and then trying to hide it all from neighbors, family and the children.

For seventeen years, this was author Alberta H. Sequeira’s existence every day as she dealt with her husband’s alcoholism. She loved mild-mannered Richard Lopes and witnessed how alcohol changed him from a loving family man with a successful business to a careless, angry, abusive drunk.
Someone Stop This Merry Go Round
Written like dramatic fiction, Someone Stop This Merry-Go-Round: An Alcoholic Family in Crisis is a fast paced, tension-filled account of a woman’s tireless effort to keep her family together, her two children safe and to protect her own mental and physical well being. Sequeira gives an honest telling of life married to an alcoholic-a life filled with sadness, fear, pain and despair.

Sequeira didn’t believe in divorce and was too proud to seek help from her parents, deciding to go it alone. Several times it seemed her husband was ready to quit his devastating lifestyle and commit fully to being a good partner and devoted father, only to have him fall back to bingeing and his alcoholic ways. This rollercoaster life took its toll on Sequeira, plaguing her with frequent panic attacks and eventually bringing her to the brink of a total breakdown.

Through arguments, unpaid bills, violent rage, emotional abuse and neglect, Sequeira kept hope that her husband would eventually realize he had a problem, and seek treatment. He never did…always believing he was just having a few drinks with his buddies after a hard day’s work. Sequeira takes her share of the blame for all the times she could have kicked him out, demanded he got help, or pressed charges for the abuse. I found myself cheering for her, hoping that in the end Mr. Lopes would choose to save his marriage and his family. Despite being divorced from Mr. Lopes, Sequeira suffered greatly when he succumbed in 1985 to the damage done to his body from a lifetime of drinking.

Alberta H. Sequeira is a talented writer. She shows great courage not only in surviving, but in her willingness to return to these experiences when she wrote this memoir. I believe this book could be of great help to alcoholics, their families and even counselors. I highly recommend Someone Stop This Merry-Go-Round: An Alcoholic Family in Crisis and I look forward to the follow-up coming soon. The sequel, Please, God, Not Two-This Killer Called Alcoholism details how Sequeira’s daughter, Lori Cahill, followed the same path as her father.

Someone Stop This Merry-Go-Round

William Potter attempted his first novel at age eleven when he scribbled a few lines about a giant rampaging crab.

On the Verge of Madness by author George Wilhite

September 19th, 2009

On the Verge of Madness by author George Wilhite is like a perfectly cooked steak…dark on the outside and a little bloody in the middle. This collection of fiction features eight very different stories, each showcasing Wilhite’s considerable talent and vast knowledge of the horror genre. His work has already drawn comparison to Poe and Lovecraft. But let me tell you, Wilhite’s own twisted style and warped voice is evident on every page.

The opening novella, Victor Chaldean and the Portal is worth the price of admission. Victor is desperate to solve the disappearance of his wife. After he begins to have strange visions, he seeks help from a psychologist studying the paranormal. An experimental drug takes Victor into a fractured realm, into a place trapped between life and death where he struggles to find his lost wife and each day is more convinced he is insane.

Next up is Murmurers. I settled in for a great read as Wilhite hooked me quickly with a story of an Earth all but stripped of human life. A former combat soldier and a teenage girl find a special bond after he saves her life. To survive they must trust each other and keep moving to avoid the mysterious Murmurers. The only problem for me was how quickly this one ended.

In Checks and Balances, alcoholic John breezes through the first of the twelve steps to recovery. It is step Eight – making amends with those he has hurt – with which he struggles the most. If only he could make a trade, a deal, to skip this step. But who or what would make such a bargain?

Lars kills for money. He is very good at what he does. When it comes to clothes, only the very best will do for Lars. In The Gangster’s New Clothes, Wilhite attempts a short in the style of the old Twilight Zone TV show. The result is a fun, frightening tale. A second after Lars puts on his handmade suit, he finds himself facing his checkered past and, step by step, is pushed closer to insanity.

Wilhite then gives us two amazing examples of the old adage: less is more. A Plea From the Cradle and Cast of Characters are “flash fiction” at its finest. Not a word is wasted – both of these tales will quickly put a shiver up your spine if not a smile on your face.

All good things must end, and I believe Wilhite saved the best for last. A Tale of Two Moons is a Werewolf classic and could possibly explain the origin of these legendary monsters.

Masque Profane takes us beyond the “Verge of Madness,” delving straight into full blown insanity. Rhonda and Jeff are happy newlyweds…or are they? Rhonda becomes obsessed with the fact that Jeff has never spent a Halloween night with her in their time together. This fixation takes Rhonda to the gathering place of a strange ritual one Halloween night. Her experience there, and later the birth of her child would one day take her to madness and a horrific murder.

In all eight of these stories, whether novella or short, the author’s skill at character development, crisp dialogue and page turning suspense is forefront. He captivates the reader with intriguing characters and fine plotting without the pointless brutal violence and gratuitous sex that has become so common in horror today. I highly recommend On the Verge of Madness and I look forward to the follow up, Silhouette of Darkness. I doubt that it will be long before a major publisher signs Wilhite, as his work deserves to be on shelves next to the likes of Peter Straub and Thomas F. Monteleone.

“Creating and Living the Life of Your Dreams”, says ‘The Practical Guide to Exceptional Living’- A must read book.

September 15th, 2009

“To dream anything that you want to dream; that’s the beauty of human mind. To do anything you want to do; that is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test your limit; that is the courage to succeed”, quotes Bernard Edmonds.

Since time began the human brain has never stopped functioning, even for a second. We have always been on a quest to learn how to operate more efficiently and better than we have in the past. With the known fact that ‘time’ is our most valuable asset, and we never seem to have enough of it to use at our disposal. We remain so busy checking email, texting, twittering and checking voice mail that we sometime lose sight of what is important in life. This is a common problem found in many people’s lives today.

Interestingly, Jim Garland, an entrepreneur and author, reveals a solution to this problem in his latest book ‘The Practical Guide to Exceptional Living’.

In ‘The Practical Guide to Exceptional Living’, Jim reveals the concepts and tools that have led him to marry the woman of his dreams, have time to spend with their four wonderful, thriving children, start a business from the trunk of his car and turn it into a $4,000,000 company, develop a management team and process that runs this business without him, and still have time to, travel, surf, and enjoy a healthy active lifestyle.

There are many writers who publish books about the subjects of attitude, goal setting, health, faith, finance, etc. But Jim Garland is an author who has written this book by referring to his own life and the experiences he has had. He says, “It does not matter what your current situation, education or economic status is, with patience and persistence and the willingness to follow the ideas from this book, your life can be improved on every level”. “The Practical Guide to Exceptional Living is the simple and easy to understand guide that will allow you to discover a whole new world that is inside of you. Learn to dream big dreams”, he adds further.

Once you know how to prioritize your goals, you can attain happiness that has no boundaries. We all have ideas in our heads of things we would like to change or improve in our lives and Jim’s book will lead you on your way.

“Anyone can pick up this book and learn something instantly that will change their life. Whether you are a wealthy business person, a college student, a stay at home mom, an entrepreneur or an employee, this book is for you”.

About Jim Garland:

Jim Garland is an entrepreneur, business owner and business consultant. He married the woman of his dreams and has four wonderful children.  He has organized his life in a way that allowed him to take off 5 weeks this summer without checking his business email or phone, along with taking an additional 5 weeks off throughout the year as well. He started his business from the trunk of his car and turned it into a $4,000,000 company. He believes in self-development and leading a healthy lifestyle and has also written blogs and articles related to health and success. The secrets of his success are revealed in his new book The Practical Guide to Exceptional Living.

Save money purchasing used textbooks online

August 28th, 2009

San Diego, CA ( PRFriend ) August 28, 2009  – Recent government and industry studies indicate that college textbook prices over the past 20 years have increased more than 200%, or twice the rate of inflation.  This is the retail price offered by the textbook publishers.  “The same textbooks can actually be purchased online for up to 90% less,” said Bobby Brannigan, CEO, ValoreBooks.com , a major used online textbook website.

The Internet has revolutionized the used college textbook market by allowing the development of efficient online marketplaces to connect buyers and sellers from around the world.

At ValoreBooks.com, for example, a leading student online marketplace for used textbooks , a used copy of “Chemistry: The Central Science” eleventh edition by Brown and Lemay, which lists for $194.40, was recently available for $62.97.  The same book was offered on Amazon.com for $119.95.

Often, a book that is no longer used at one school is still used at another.  With an online marketplace, a student can easily list their book online and sell it within days to a student at the other end of the world.  So, instead of a textbook sitting in the back of a college student’s closet, it can be sold and reused.

The average college textbook has a life of three to four years before a new edition is produced.  With each year that a textbook is in use, more used copies become available.  Considering the fact that college and university enrollments are increasing rapidly, especially in the recession, along with the fact that at least 25% of students decide to keep their textbooks after their classes end, the supply of used textbooks may not meet national demand until year three or so.

So, what does this mean for college students looking to save money by purchasing used textbooks?  Figure out which books you need and buy them early.  For the first three years of a textbook’s life there will not be enough used copies available to meet the needs of students worldwide.  So, if you want to save big bucks this semester on used textbooks be sure to buy them as quickly as possible. To make the most of your purchases remember to sell your textbooks back as soon as the semester ends rather than waiting.

RealTime Publishing, Inc. has published “towards the unMaking of Heaven, Balant: A Beginning” by Sam Amith, which is the author’s most recent book to date. Balant is also available in multiple eBook formats from all the main online retail stores for $7.95. The webpage at www.theebooksale.com/zen-cart was launched simultaneously with the book’s publication.

About the Book (Excerpts & Info):
Fumes, dust and smoke rose all around us. Then the shuttle slowly, very slowly, listed to the right hand side.
“We’re alive,” Malamud said with surprise.
For a moment the smoke cleared. We looked out, through the tangled vegetation wrapped around the shuttle, at some trees, and beyond them a green mountain slope.
“Still got your low opinion of learning?” Dag asked Malamud as he unstrapped himself. “Because without Pi’s learning we wouldn’t now be alive.”
“I only wish he had a little more learning,” Malamud said as he too unstrapped himself, “then we might not have had such a bumpy landing.”
As for me, I sat there exhausted, unable to move. I remember attempting to smile at them, and at the same time feeling the gravity stirring the nausea within me. My head wound throbbed. The pain became a breathless thump deep in my heart. Then I lost consciousness again.

The Forgotten Crash Of A B-25 Bomber That Flew Into The Empire State Building

August 8th, 2009

On the 8th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, so many people do not know or have forgotten about the crash of a World War II, B-25 Bomber that flew into the Empire State Building on July 28, 1945.

Fourteen people who died that day in 1945 doesn’t compare to the 2,948 who lost their lives including those in the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Sixty four years has shrouded the memory of a day that’s been ignored and forgotten because of an Army Air Corps pilot who made an error in flight due to foggy weather.

The events that happened that day in 1945 have been written into a fictional novel by Michael K. Jones. He has written a 277 page book (The Coincidences of Kyle) that correlates with what happened on that not so infamous day. He has combined facts that develop into a story that’s filled with action, romance, and adventure included with a little touch of comedy.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is currently being built at the site where the two twin towers once stood. Currently an organization called Story Corps is conducting recorded interviews from anyone who has a story about a victim of the September 11 attacks, including the attack that occurred on February 26, 1993 which killed 6 people and injured 1,042. A recording booth is temporary located at lower Manhattan’s Foley Square. For information or to make appointments call, 212- 312-8788.

The bomber crash of the Empire State Building should be added to the memorial as a reminder that tall buildings which are designed to be safe; are not really safe as they seem.
