Asthma UK is the perfect partner for carpet & upholstery cleaning specialists Chem-Dry

February 8th, 2010

Professional carpet & upholstery cleaning and disaster restoration specialists Chem-Dry aim to raise the bar and really make a difference for asthma sufferers this year, after announcing Asthma UK as their chosen ‘Charity of the Year’ for 2010. Chem-Dry franchisees up and down the country aim to help raise significant funds through a range of fundraising initiatives and activities during 2010.

In 2010, Chem-Dry is proud to be supporting Asthma UK, the national charity dedicated to helping the one in five households affected by asthma. Most people will know someone with asthma, but many people don’t realise that this condition is serious and claims three lives in the UK every day. In fact, more people die each year of asthma than cervical cancer and testicular cancer combined and sadly many adults and children with severe asthma face frequent hospital visits or can be stuck in their own homes, trapped by breathlessness.

Asthma UK provides support and advice to all people affected by asthma, through a range of projects, dedicated research and services. These can include specialised holidays for children with asthma and a popular Adviceline staffed by asthma nurse specialists.

Neil Churchill, Chief Executive of Asthma UK says: “We are really excited about our brand new partnership with Chem-Dry in 2010 and look forward to working with their staff, franchises and customers to make a real difference for people with asthma and maintain vital services such as our Adviceline”.

Mark Richardson, Marketing Executive, Chem-Dry Franchising, comments “We believe this partnership is a perfect fit for our national network of franchise businesses. Throughout 2010 we will be organising some special events and activities in an effort to raise awareness of asthma and hopefully generate lots of funds for this worthwhile cause. There is little doubt a fair majority of the population will have some personal experiences of asthma and are likely to have a family member who suffers badly from the related symptoms. We intend to build a good working relationship with Asthma UK and hope this partnership will run beyond 2010”.

About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body and it stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and 2.5 million worldwide.

Mumbai Xpress Winner’s Jacket Auctioned for Charity Funds

September 28th, 2009

Designers requested proceeds be donated to Aseema

CHENNAI – The designers of the Mumbai Xpress Rickshaw Challenge Winner’s Jackets, Barhka-N-Sonzal, have requested that the funds produced from the auctioning of the extra winner’s jacket be donated to Aseema, an education center for street and underprivileged children.

The third annual Mumbai Xpress Rickshaw Challenge, an event produced by Chennai Event Management Services that had 27 international participants driving autorickshaws from Chennai to Mumbai, flagged down for the year in Mumbai on August 13th. The winners of the event, based on a point total for a series of accomplished tasks, charity donations, and team and organizer nominations, was the Nigel Manzil team, comprised of two gentlemen from the UK, Paul Haran and Harry Hanscomb.

Paul and Harry became the Mumbai Xpress Rickshaw Challenge World Champions and each received an extremely unique trophy, complimentary entrance into the 2010 Caucasian Challenge (another event from Chennai Event Management Services), and a designer jacket from Barkha-N-Sonzal. Because the Mumbai Xpress had a participating team of three members, three designer jackets were initially made. However, as only a two-person team won, an extra jacket remained.

By request of the Barkha-N-Sonzal, the jacket will be auctioned off on eBay and proceeds will be donated to Aseema.

Barkha and Sonzal, two women from South Mumbai and the namesakes of their company, design traditional and Western-style clothing and accessories exclusively for men. Despite their new label, Barkha-N-Sonzal has designed clothing for many celebrities, including pianist Richard Clayderman, Rahul Sharma, and several Bollywood icons.

Aseema, an award-winning education center designed to provide underprivileged children with a nurturing and stimulating educational environment, will use the funds raised by the auction for a variety of efforts that will invariably support their mission.

International Human Rights Poet Laureate Makes Twitter his Voice for Peace

July 30th, 2009

International award-winning poet, Larry Jaffe, reaches out to the youth of the world by tweeting each of the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 140 characters or less to spread a message of peace and responsibility for humankind.

Tampa Bay, FL, July 27, 2009 – Poet Larry Jaffe has been using his art to promote human rights his entire career.  As an official Ambassador for Youth for Human Rights as well as their Poet Laureate, Jaffe has been featured in poetry venues and festivals both throughout the U.S. and abroad.  But in today’s “Brave New World” Jaffe is speaking for peace on Twitter, by tweeting each of the 30 articles of Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 140 characters or less.

Jaffe is excited about his poetry foray into Twitter and despite having read his work in such distinguished locations such as the Japanese American Museum, the Jewish Museum and the Museum of Literature in Prague he says Twitter has more ability to reach the mainstream.

Born out of the atrocities and enormous loss of life during World War II, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created by the United Nations to provide a common understanding of what everyone’s rights are. It forms the basis for a world built on freedom, justice and peace.

“Tell the world about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and make everyone you know aware of them, says Larry.  “Get these rights taught to our children so they know their birthright.”

Larry still loves to read in a variety of bookstores, coffeehouses and bars to keep his roots intact.  He says his Twitter tweets will be no different than his usual poetry and will always integrate a strong sense of humor along with a tough stand on human rights and freedom.

Follow Larry via his poetic tweets on Twitter@larryjaffe.

About Poet Larry Jaffe:

From the sensually romantic to humor and social commentary, Larry Jaffe impacts audiences with a rich emotional range, masterfully crafted. His poetry appears in numerous anthologies, magazines, and on the Internet where he has pioneered poetry web sites.  Passionate about his purpose to bring Human Rights to the forefront of our youth’s minds, Jaffe said, “Every day I read about various human rights violations and in my heart I know we can make a better world. It is my great hope that we as poets lead the way to a new and better civilization.”  His poem OWNED has been adopted as the official poem on human slave trafficking.  In addition to his Poet Laureate status for the Youth for Human Rights International, Jaffe is also the co-founder of Poets for Human Rights, an international coalition of poets and human rights advocates.  Visit Larry at www.reverbnation.com/larryjaffe

Tonnino aids its community in time of need

May 31st, 2009

Tonnino is a socially active responsible brand. It constantly supports its workmates, community and the country, and is always present in times of need. These past months, Tonnino has been of great help to the Costa Rican community, where the production plant is found.

Last December 2008, Costa Rica’s Caribbean province, Limon, was affected by floods, and thousands of inhabitants lost their belongings, homes, and even worse, their families. The floods affected this region for over 9 days, and over 6,500 people where living in 78 shelters. As soon as this incident was decreed a national emergency, Tonnino donated 2,000 boxes of tuna cans (worth $70,000) to the province’s most affected areas. The company tried to alleviate the needs of all those affected, and encouraged other companies to do so as well. Karla Alfaro, one of the company’s brand managers, was asked to offer a few encouraging words to the public. This was not the first time the company contributed to emergencies caused by natural disasters.

This past January 8, 2009, nature struck again the country, this time with a 6.2 earthquake, where mountains fell, streets collapsed, and hundreds of homes where destroyed. Several days after the disaster, bodies where still being found buried under shattered homes and dirt. The tragedy had such a magnitude, that the government and many private and public companies where brought together to contribute in different ways to the community. Tonnino donated a variety of 96,000 tuna cans, which represents 2,000 boxes of product (worth over $62,000). The company made 2 separate donations: the first 500 tuna boxes were given to Bor-Kar, a local company that volunteered to administer all donations since the first day after the earthquake. The other 1,500 boxes were given to the Presidential House organization, entity in charge of distributing all donations around the affected area.

When earthquakes, floods, or any other harmful incidents from nature affect the country, Tonnino shows solidarity by donating tuna products to the homeless and those with few or no income. Tonnino invites all other Costa Rican companies to unite for a good cause.

Aside from the noble cause of aiding the community, Tonnino tuna is a healthy and nutritious option; a good source of protein, minerals and Omega 3 fatty acids that contributes to everyone’s health and well-being.

Online auction house DubLi feeds hungry children by selling a $10,000 Debit Card

May 18th, 2009

Phoenix, Arizona. – The online auction house DubLi features a generous charity promotion supporting children. There will be two auctions, each selling a $10,000 DubLi Debit Card. The revenue accumulated during the first auction will be donated to the child aid organization “Blessings in a Backpack”.

“Blessings in a Backpack feeds children in grades K-5 in Title 1 public schools; who qualify for the Federal Free and Reduced Meal Program and who may not have any or enough food on the weekend”. It supports over 10,000 needy children in Kentucky, Indiana, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, California, and New York to ensure that these young students are able to concentrate on their lessons rather than on their rumbling tummies.

Celebrities such as actress and song-writer Hilary Duff and rock legend Sammy Hagar are currently partnering the charity program.

But this is not the first time for the reverse online auction house to support charity organizations by donating an auction’s total revenue. In December 2008, DubLi already featured a charity promotion which created a total donation of $5,000 to Sparks Charities and was partnered by Jordin Sparks, winner of the American Idol competition.

The current charity auction inuring to the benefit of “Blessings in a Backpack” is online from April 27 to May 31. It is featured in the reverse-style “unique bid” auction portal, which is an auction type where the lowest single bid is awarded the item.

With this charity promotion, the bidders do not only contribute to the welfare of children in need, but do also get the chance to improve their financial situations: the two lucky awardees can spend the $10,000 as they desire. “We are happy to be able to support this charity organization, thus enabling both the needy and the bidders to benefit from DubLi’s success”, says DubLi CTO Dennis Hoffmann.

MJPC: MONUC & Kabila Not Enforcing the ICC Arrest Warrant Against Ntaganda

April 30th, 2009

MJPC: MONUC & Kabila Not Enforcing the ICC Arrest Warrant Against Ntaganda

MJPC calls upon the Congelese Government and MONUC to act decisively to enforce the outstanding arrest warrant against Bosco Ntaganda.

The  Mobilization for Justice and Peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MJPC) today called on the Congolese Government and the UN’s peacekeeping force in DR Congo, which is known as MONUC to act decisively to enforce the outstanding arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Bosco Ntaganda.

Shocked and outraged by recent report by BBC that an indicted ICC war criminal is playing a leading role in the UN mission in the DR Congo, the MJPC  is strongly urging the UN Security Council and the entire international community to put pressure on the Congolese Government and MONUC to enforce the ICC outstanding arrest warrant against Ntaganda as soon as possible. “While it seems  absurd that the 17,000 UN troops in Congo have not yet taken steps to enforce the ICC arrest warrant against Ntagada, it is alarming and even horrifying that they are engaged incoordinating military operations with someone  accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity of inconceivable magnitude”, said Amede Kyubwa,  Executive Director of MJPC.

“Unlike other countries where there are ongoing investigations on cases of war crimes and crimes against humanity, the ICC has the power to enforce its arrest warrants in the Democratic Republic of Congo because of the 17,000  peacekeeping soldiers of the UN in the country,  but so far these troops have not yet made attempts to arrest Ntaganda despite knowing his whereabouts and coordinating military operations with him. Warrant issued by the ICC must be respected and enforced by MONUC and  Government of  Congo” added Mr Kyubwa.

Ntaganda is accused of several war crimes and crimes against humanity including: the massacres of 150 people in the town of Kiwanja in 2008 in his duties as  military chief of staff of the National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP),  torturing and killing of hundreds of civilians of Lendu and Ngiti ethnicity between August 2002 and March 2003 when he was chief of military operations of the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC), slaughtering of at least 800 civilians on ethnic grounds at Mongbwalu, including the first priest killed in the Ituri conflict, Abbe Boniface Bwanalonga, killing of a Kenyan UN peacekeeper in January 2004 and  kidnapping a Moroccan peacekeeper later that year, and recruiting child soldiers in the eastern region of Ituri. The MJPC is strongly urging the Congolese  Government and MONUC to execute the arrest warrant issued by the ICC against Ntaganda.

As part of its global campaign against impunity in Congo, the MJPC  has set up an online petition which can be signed at http://www.gopetition.com.au/online/24459.html  asking concerned citizens around the world to demand the UN in Congo Mission known as MONUC and the Congolese Government  to act decisively to enforce the ICC outstanding arrest warrants against  Ntaganda.

About MJPC
MJPC  is a nonprofit organization working  to add a voice in advocating for justice and peace in the DRC particulary in the east of DRC where thousands innocent civilian including children and women continue to suffer massive human rights violations while armed groups responsible for these crimes go unpunished

For more information about  the  MJPC and its activities, visit http://www.mjpcongo.org. or call Amede Kyubwa  @ 916 753 5717 or e-mail: info@mjpcongo.org . Town & country foods joins world orphans in building orphan homes in Africa

April 24th, 2009

Town & Country Foods Inc. has joined forces with World Orphans to help address the needs of millions of orphans; by helping to build five orphan homes in Uganda and Liberia. To date donations of over $100,000 from Town & Country Foods, with the participation of our customers, has opened the door for one of the most unique partnerships in history to address this unprecedented problem. American’s simply changing where they buy their groceries is changing the destinies of children around the world.

The problem: the number of children in the world that have lost their mother or father, are parentless, or have been abandoned…now exceeds 143 million. This absolutely staggering number is almost equivalent to one-half of the total population of the Untied States. In the past hour;

  • 1,625 children were forced to live on the streets by the death or abuse of an adult
  • 1,667 children under the age of five died from malnutrition and vaccine-preventable diseases
  • 115 children became prostitutes
  • 66 children under age 15 were infected with HIV
  • 257 children were orphaned because of HIV/AIDS

Town & Country Food is committed to helping with this massive problem with a simple idea, 81% of American’s would change where they purchase a product if quality and price was the same, or better, and if they could help someone by doing so. Cone/Roper Corporate Citizenship Study, 2001.

Town & Country Foods Inc. offers the finest food available today delivered directly to the home. Our “system of the future” delivers a customized menu designed to meet the specific needs of each household. All natural meats, certified organic vegetables and seafood are delivered in individually vacuum sealed, portion controlled servings that thaw very quickly for gourmet meals on the run. Complimenting these main dinner items are pastas, pizza and a wide variety of quick meals and deserts.

The Town & Country Foods System is delivered to the home in a budget friendly quantity that reduces impulse purchasing, unplanned eating out, labor costs of the retail system and inflation. Town & Country’s inflation rate on food the past 15 years has averaged 2%, in comparison to reports of food going up as much as 20% per year in some markets at the grocery store.

“As each new customer comes on board they create an automatic donation to World Orphans by referring friends and family to the program,” reported Kirby Patterson, Vice President of Town and Country Foods. “We are excited to partner with our customers and World Orphans with a simple idea of taking part of the savings in getting a new customer and re-directing it to World Orphans to provide a home for the orphans of the world.” For more information call 1-800-651-3663 ext. 555

Former Professional Athletes Team with Shop to Fundraise to Keep Non-Profits in the Game

March 20th, 2009

March 18, 2009—Shop to Fundraise is partnering with former professional athletes from the NHL, NBA, U.S. Soccer and Figure Skating sporting worlds to support non-profit organizations in raising big funds during this time of economic turmoil.

“Shop to Fundraise is offering something very unique to these organizations,” says Jerome Williams, former NBA star for the New York Knicks, “and I’m happy to be part of what they’re doing.”

Shop to Fundraise says goodbye to the traditional ways non-profits raised funds, such as silent auctions, selling raffle tickets, candy bars or doughnuts. These methods take valuable time and volunteer effort. They require committee meetings, overhead, planning, travel expenses, and some are not very safe for children. Moreover, the results are minimal at best.

“Shop to Fundraise uses the limitless power of the internet,” says Joe Raats, Shop to Fundraise president, “and bridges the gap between time-constrained volunteers and powerful retailers with large inventories.” Using a personalized Virtual Shopping Mall, an organization can reach out to its members, and beyond, to capture percentages of sales families are making anyway every day.

Gone are the days of begging people to stretch their dollars to make one small donation. Those tired old plays don’t work anymore. Shop to Fundraise lets non-profit organizations earn cash back on sales for items from toothbrushes and organic shampoos to computers and plane tickets.

“What’s great about Shop to Fundraise,” says Randy Burridge, former professional NHL All Star Forward, “is that an organization, like a youth hockey club for instance, can actually receive cash from the sales parents are already making for equipment and travel expenses. It’s a win-win situation!”

To learn more about Shop to Fundraise, visit their Web site at http://www.shoptofundraise.org/.

About Shop to Fundraise

Shop to Fundraise creates health, wealth and prosperity for non-profit organizations. Originally founded as a way to support youth sports clubs, Shop to Fundraise will work for any non-profit organization. It is currently being supported by former NBA player, Jerome Williams; former NHL players, Randy Burridge, Jayson More, Pokey Reddick and Bob Sweeney; former U.S. Soccer professional, Eddie Henderson; and former professional Figure Skater, Surya Bonaly.

Uganda charity gets helping hand through Facebook, Coinjars app

August 28th, 2008

In a unique joint venture between Soft Power Education – a British-registered, non profit empowering primary school education in Uganda- social networking website Facebook and innovative Facebook application Coinjars, a new way to fundraise is now live. Combining cutting edge eMoney technologies with the power of social networking, Soft Power Education is actively seeking donations from all over the world to help them in their effort to make a difference in Uganda.

(Gibraltar; August 27, 2008) – Long after the political instability and dictatorship of former Ugandan President Idi Amin, the country has remained in the ranks of least developed nations. Despite its wealth in terms of beauty and vast natural resources, it has ironically remained poor, with its people languishing in extreme forms of poverty with little access to education.

Soft Power Education has been working to help provide a better future to children in Jinja, Uganda through education.

“Our aim is to develop and improve educational facilities for children, mainly those in the primary level,” Ms. Hannah Small said, trustee and founder of Soft Power Education.

Based in Jinja, Uganda, Soft Power Education is a British-registered, non religious charitable organization and Ugandan NGO that has been helping children and local communities in the area through its Primary School Refurbishment Programme.

“We initially built two preschools for AIDS orphans and for the last five years, we have been involved in the refurbishment of over 30 government primary schools in the Budondo, Mafubira, Butagaya sub-counties of Jinja as well as several schools around the Murchison Falls Conservation Area.,” Ms. Small proudly stated.

From the School Refurbishment Programme, other projects have grown – The inspiring Amagezi Education Centre where children come to experience hands on, inclusive learning in Art, Drama, ICT, Agriculture and Drama. The centre also doubles as a community centre offering hands on skills based courses for members of the surrounding community. The Murchison Project based in the Murchison Falls Conservation Area aims to involve the surrounding communities in the conservation efforts in a bid to enable them to benefit from the growing tourism in the area.

“As Daisaku Ikeda of Harvard University said, the moving force of history has shifted from “hard power,” or military and political might, to that of “soft power,” or knowledge and information, culture, ideas, and systems. That is where we got our name,” Ms. Small shared.

People working for Soft Power Education say they are fortunate enough to find themselves in the position of being able to affect a phenomenal improvement in the lives and education of children in Jinja. But they need support.

“As they say, there is strength in numbers. We cannot do this alone. We need the help of others,” one of Soft Power Education’s volunteer said.

To continue with its mission of making a difference in the lives of Ugandan children and their families, Soft Power Education is actively seeking donations and volunteers in the United Kingdom, Europe and the rest of the world.

“Soft Power Education is 100% charity, so everything you donate will go into our projects, enabling all of us to make a difference to lives of Uganda’s children,” Ms. Small explained.

Thankfully, doing charity in the modern world need not be confined in the conventional limits of time and space. Right in the comfort of one’s home, with a simple click of the mouse or tap on the keyboard, those interested in helping Uganda’s children through Soft Power Education can easily send in their donations.

“If you are also into Facebook, like most people are, you just have to add the Coinjars application and you are ready to help make a difference in Uganda,” Ms. Small enthused.

Coinjars is a wallet application built on the iCoins platform that includes a fully secured and licensed eMoney issuer. iCoins is a digital cash mechanism designed to allow cash transactions between disparate and unrelated wallet systems in the digital era. iCoins are what bank notes are in the real world.

Coinjars enables the sending and receiving of donations right within Facebook. Donors can fund their Coinjars accounts via credit card, bank transfer or Paypal. Fundraisers and donation recipients, on the other hand, can withdraw via the same mechanisms. The best thing about the transactions is that while they are digital they remain free. Recipients will receive the money as is and without any deductions.

For more information on Coinjars, visit its Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=6489937223

Meanwhile, interested parties may visit http://www.facebook.com/pages/Soft-Power-Education/26342957259 to know more about the Soft Power group and how you can start donating via iCoins and Coinjars.
