The Difference Between a Smartphone and PDA

July 27th, 2010

Technological advancements make common terminology such as mobile phone, smartphone and China mobile PDA difficult to decipher as each type of device changes constantly and features traditionally belonging to one type of device are now found on others. Here we will explore the popular category of mobile communication devices, the similarities and differences between some of the popular products.

What Is a Smartphone?
A smartphone is considered to be the combination of the traditional PDA and cellular phone, with a bigger focus on the cellular phone part. These handheld devices integrates mobile phone capabilities with the more common features of a handheld computer or PDA. Smartphones allow users to store information, e-mail, install programs, along with using a mobile phone in one device. A smartphone’s features is usually more oriented towards mobile phone options than the PDA-like features. There is no industry standard for what defines a smartphone, so any mobile phone device that has more than basic cellphone capabilities can actually be filed under the smartphone category of devices.

What Is a PDA Phone?
It’s definitely a lack of standardization that makes the category of cell phone devices so confusing to the consumer. As technology changes, so do the functions that these different devices perform. Years ago, many people differentiated PDA and smartphone simply by looking for touch-screen capabilities. If it had a touch screen, it was a PDA, if it didn’t, it was a smartphone.  The Sony Ericsson Smartphone, for example, offers users both a touch screen and a full QWERTY keyboard.  Despite the fact that the manufacturer calls this product a smartphone, the generic term for a PDA oriented device with cellular phone capabilities is called a PDA phone.

What’s The Differences?
In summing up the differences between these common mobile communications devices you could say that a PDA mobile phone is more PDA than phone and a smartphone is more phone than PDA. And, of course, a cellular phone is more phone than anything else.

The Apple iPhone 4 is Here!

June 29th, 2010

The iPhone 4 has been eagerly awaited and is now here. The official launch date for the UK and the USA is 24th June 2010. Well, has it been worth the wait? Of course, the iPhone 4 is a much smarter and nicer looking phone than the 3GS.

Let’s look at the size of the body of the iPhone 4 and how it compares with the 3GS. The 3GS is 115.2mm x 62.1 x 12.3 and weighs in at 135g, while the iPhone is 115.2mm x 58.6 x 9.3 and weighs 137g. So the new iPhone 4 is shorter, narrower, thinner but slightly heavier. The extra weight comes from the new body which is made from an alloy created by Apple and forged to be 5 times stronger than standard steel. This not only makes the iPhone 4 body extremely rigid, but the steel body also
acts as an antenna to improve the reception quality.
To further add to the toughness of the new iPhone, the front and back of the phone has two panels of aluminosilicate glass. This same type of glass is used in the windscreens of helicopters and high speed trains. The glass is chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic.

So what else is new? The amount of RAM or memory for the iPhone 4 is 512mb which is twice that of the 3GS and four times that of the 3G. This is a much needed improvement and will see the iPhone able to work faster especially when multi-tasking. Also, Apple’s A4 processor is a blistering 1Ghz compared to the 600Mhz of the 3GS.

For people who dislike the site of a charger, the iPhone 4 has a larger battery which means that the talk time is extended from 5 hours to 7 hours (assuming you use 3G and not 2G), internet use time is extended from 6 to 7 hours, wifi internet from 9 to 10 hours and audio from 30 to 40 hours.

Oh yes, for Apple lovers in the eastern hemisphere, the iPhone 4 now supports 900mhz. The only frequencies before in the UMTS/HSDPA were 850, 1900 and 2100Mhz.

Now to the visuals, the screen on the iPhone 4 has been greatly improved as well. It still remains at a size of 3.5”, but whereas the resolution on the 3GS was 320×480 pixels, the iPhone 4 resolution is a mighty 960×640 pixels. The new display is called ‘Retina display’, this is because it has a greater number of pixels than the human retina can process. This is good news if you would like to read books on your phone with the iBooks application, as the sharpness and clarity is much improved. The web pages, apps, menus as well as text appear much sharper on the iPhone 4 compared to the fuzzy images of the 3GS. The iPhone 4 has the highest resolution phone screen ever, this is achieved by having each pixel a mere 78 micrometres across, so small that the human eye cannot distinguish each individual pixel and there are also 326 pixels per inch!

With regard to the iBook application, the iPhone 4 has features not previously available on the iPad. These include the ability to create bookmarks and notes and see them in the table of contents. There is also the ability to support PDF’s (portable document format).

One of the latest and probably most important software applications to come out of the Apple stable is the new iOS4 operating system. This is downloadable from the Apple store via their iTunes and is a whopping 315Mb in size. With the iOS4 in place on your new iPhone 4, you will be able to drag one application on top of another one and create a new folder. It will also detect what type of applications you are combining. The speed of the camera is improved as well when the iOS4 is installed.

The new features of the iPhone 4 are: Bluetooth keyboard support, digital camera zoom, Game Centre, iBooks, multi-tasking, app specific location setting and video calling.

Now, if the iOS4 is installed to the 3G and 3GS you will have the following features available: 5x digital camera zoom, iBooks, compass app support, portrait orientation lock, tap to focus for the camera, wallpapers for the home screen, custom dictionary, rotate and resize photos, unified inbox for your emails, app gifting, all game support and persistent wifi. Multi tasking will be available for the iPhone 4,  3G Touch and 2G Touch, but not the iPhone 3G.

To get your hands on a nice new iPhone 4 you can opt for a pay-as-you-go or a pay monthly contract. In the UK, it used to be that the only independent reseller was O2. Thankfully that has changed and the iPhone is now available from Orange, Vodafone, Tesco, 3, and T-Mobile. All these providers are offering pay monthly deals from £30 per month. If you want freedom, Apple are offering a SIM free iPhone at £499 for the 16Gb and £599 for the 32Gb.

If you are thinking of taking your SIM card out of your existing phone and inserting it into the phone, well you can’t. The new iPhone uses a micro SIM card (smaller than a normal SIM card). However, Orange are giving away an adaptor with their iPhones so that if you want to take your micro SIM out of your iPhone 4 and insert it into your other mobile then you can. Other mobile operators will probably follow suit.

On a final note, Apple users are obviously enthusiastic about their gadgets and feel a need to meet similar people, even on a romantic level. There is a dating site called Cupidtino for those who adore their devices. The site can only be accessed using an iPhone, iPad or Mac. Well, what else would you expect?

Fifth of under 16s admit to risky random texting

June 5th, 2010

With a rising number of children and teenagers now owning a mobile phone in Britain, the UK’s leading mobile phone comparison website has commissioned a study into a new ‘random text’ trend, which could be putting youngsters at risk.

In a new poll of 1,382 teens aged between 13 and 16, www.rightmobilephone.co.uk has found that there is an increasing number of young people engaging in what is potentially a dangerous text messaging trend, involving sending a message to a random number and awaiting a reply.

19% of the respondents who took part in the poll admitting having previously done this, despite the risk of speaking with strangers and 22% claimed to have played ‘text roulette’, a slightly different trend that involves typing an obscene text message before scrolling through the contact list and sending it to whoever it lands on.

Further findings of the study by rightmobilephone.co.uk included almost two thirds, 64%, of the young respondents admitting to adding or accepting somebody they didn’t know as a friend on Facebook.

Of those who admitted to sending random texts to unknown numbers, 11% said it was ‘loneliness’ that prompted them to do so. 31% said it was ‘just for fun’ whilst 9% were ‘dared’ to do so. 42% said ‘boredom’ was the reason they sent random texts to strangers. More than half, 54%, said they had received a reply from the unknown number they had texted.

In terms of Facebook and those who admitted adding or accepting people they didn’t know, 72% said they just wanted to ‘look more popular’ by having more friends.

Of the teenagers that admitted to playing ‘Text Roulette’, 1 in 3 claimed it had landed them in trouble with the recipient.

Neil McHugh, co-founder of rightmobilephone.co.uk, said;

“We’d hope young people realise the dangers of texting strange numbers and adding people they don’t know on Facebook, although judging by the findings, this is not the case. As more young people now own mobile phones, I would encourage parents to keep a closer eye on how their children are using them.”

“We were surprised by the number of teenagers that have actually taken part in these risky ‘games’ like Text Roulette and what was even more worrying is that the majority of the teenagers had a reply from texts they had sent to random numbers.”
