Jean Vanier high school students big winners in Toronto AutoShow skills competition

TORONTO, Feb. 16 – Two automotive tech students from Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School in Scarborough beat out 19 other Toronto-area high school teams to win a unique skills competition that challenged students’ technical knowledge at the Canadian International AutoShow today.

Automotive schools possess qualified trainers to enhance the practical and theoretical knowledge of institute and provide to their students with appropriate equipments, time, space and more as a usage facilities. These we have fabulously observed in the students of Jean Vanier Catholic School at the organized competition.

James Bachiller and John Gonsalves performed a number of timed technical tasks and attempted to start a 2010 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible that had been rigged with a no-start condition by automotive instructors from Centennial College. By finishing first, the pair will be representing Canada at the National Automotive Technology Competition in New York City in April.

Automotive Training Instructors at Centennial College make their students vigorously engross in their technical project to have a drastic result in a short period of time. Automotive training facilities allow the students to develop new innovative ideas for the assigned projects and thereby develop dynamic skills.

Toronto’s Danforth Tech finished second, thanks to the efforts of students Cameron Elpkick and Tauriq Shaikh, while Central Tech earned third place, represented by Jonathan Bagni and Michael Mallette. In addition to the all-expenses-paid trip, Bachiller and Gonsalves received a trophy and equipment from sponsors.

The top two schools are winners, too. Their automotive tech shops will take delivery of a General Motors vehicle, which will be used for technical training. General Motors of Canada generously donated two brand-new vehicles as prizes. .

This was the 11th year for the contest, organized by Centennial College, which promotes automotive technology as a rewarding career path. Last year’s winners from Northview Heights Secondary School placed second in New York City, while a team from Central Tech beat all of the U.S. teams and collected prizes worth $250,000 in 2008.

The Toronto skills contest enjoys outstanding support from the industry. Instructor Rob Brooks, a licensed gasfitter who has been working with heating and cooling systems for almost 15 years, will demystify the common furnace using a complete demonstration model in the classroom. Brooks will emphasize the safe operation of equipment, which often involves removing flammable substances and materials away from the vicinity of the furnace.

With the popularity of government incentives to replace aging systems with more energy-efficient models, consumers are looking for information and knowledge so that they can make an informed buying decision, says Brent Groh, coordinator of continuing education at Centennial College.

“The resulting knowledge helps provide homeowners with some degree of confidence with respect to understanding how their furnace operates,” Groh says. “It also gives them the opportunity to comparison shop the different brands and systems on the market, so that they can ask the right questions before committing to a new furnace and air conditioner, which can cost up to $10,000 these days.”

The course is intended to help homeowners understand their heating system and perform simple maintenance tasks – but not repairs, which must always be performed by a licensed professional. The course fee is $75.

The theme, “Looking into the Future – 2040,” will present an opportunity to engage First Nations people and other participants in dialogue about the future for Aboriginal people. Speakers will be invited to share their vision of the year 2040, when a 16-year-old in high school will have reached middle age.

The forward-looking symposium will examine:

  • prophesies, predictions and re-generation;
  • sustainable development and inter-generational equity;
  • career trends and pathways;
  • validating indigenous ways of thinking and knowing; and,
  • the importance of oral culture and witnessing.

Keynote speaker and space shuttle veteran John Bennett Herrington of the Chickasaw Nation will discuss visioning and creating pathways for the future. Other workshops will feature Sal Ferreras from Aboriginal Music Studies at Vancouver Community College and the 2010 Aboriginal Pavilion at the Olympic Winter Games. The top prize winner will earn a full-tuition scholarship toward a bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree, certificate or diploma program to study culinary arts at one of the more than 30 participating Art Institutes schools.

Now in its eleventh year, the Best Teen Chef Competition awards more than $200,000 in tuition scholarships to The Art Institutes schools to high school seniors in the U.S. and Canada interested in pursuing a career in the fast growing culinary industry.

Local cook-off competitions will take place at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of California – San Diego on April 17, 2010.

The first place local winner will progress to the National Best Teen Chef Final Round Competition, which will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2010 at The Art Institute of Houston.

In addition to a full-tuition scholarship and the title of Best Teen Chef 2010, the national first place winner, in partnership with Food Network, will be an “Intern for a Day” at Food Network Kitchens in New York City. The winner will also receive a tour of Food Network’s studios, dinner for two at a Food Network chef’s restaurant and a library of Food Network Kitchens cookbooks.

“Each year this event draws talented teens who have a real love and enthusiasm for being in the kitchen, and enjoy using their creativity and imagination to create wonderful meals for themselves, their friends, and families,” says Chef Mark Sullivan, Academic Director of Culinary Arts, at The International School at The Art Institute of California – San Diego.
