Afraid of Your Furnace? Lose Your Fears at Centennial College

December 8th, 2009

December 09, 2009, Toronto — Does your furnace intimidate you? Centennial College is offering a new Saturday seminar intended to acquaint homeowners with their own furnace and the different types of forced-air central heating systems available on the market.

Centennial College

Centennial College

Participants will learn the function, terminology and differences between standard, mid-efficiency and high-efficiency furnaces. Other topics of the six-hour weekend seminar include preventative maintenance and the functions of various controls and furnace accessories such as humidifiers and air cleaners.

Instructor Rob Brooks, a licensed gasfitter who has been working with heating and cooling systems for almost 15 years, will demystify the common furnace using a complete demonstration model in the classroom. Brooks will emphasize the safe operation of equipment, which often involves removing flammable substances and materials away from the vicinity of the furnace.

With the popularity of government incentives to replace aging systems with more energy-efficient models, consumers are looking for information and knowledge so that they can make an informed buying decision, says Brent Groh, coordinator of continuing education at Centennial College.

“The resulting knowledge helps provide homeowners with some degree of confidence with respect to understanding how their furnace operates,” Groh says. “It also gives them the opportunity to comparison shop the different brands and systems on the market, so that they can ask the right questions before committing to a new furnace and air conditioner, which can cost up to $10,000 these days.”

The course is intended to help homeowners understand their heating system and perform simple maintenance tasks – but not repairs, which must always be performed by a licensed professional. The course fee is $75.

Centennial offers more than 1,000 career-related and personal-interest continuing education courses starting in January. For more details about Central Heating Systems for the Homeowner, course code CESD-922, call 416-289-5300.

Centennial College launches unique Total Benefits Management program

September 2nd, 2009

Sept 2, 2009, Toronto – Capitalizing on Toronto’s reputation as an important financial centre with more than 800 corporate head offices, Centennial College is launching a unique graduate certificate program in Total Benefits Management this fall.

The program incorporates courses from the industry-developed Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) curriculum, which is co-sponsored by Dalhousie University and the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. Graduates of the eight-month program will have a solid foundation in benefits administration, including defined contribution (DC) and defined benefits (DB) retirement plans, group life and health benefits in a total compensation context.

The program is ideal for foreign-trained professionals who are looking to increase their knowledge of the total benefit sector of the financial services industry, and younger talent looking for upwardly mobile career opportunities in group benefits and group retirement. The curriculum is supplemented with graduate-level instruction in core business skills such as project management and accounting, as well as applied total benefits client interface training in a state-of-the-art learning lab environment.

“The new Certificate in Total Benefits Management bridges Centennial’s commitment to education with the professional accreditation and affiliation offered by the CEBS program, giving graduates the credentials needed to set themselves apart from their peers and advance in their careers,” says David Johnson, Dean of Centennial’s School of Business.

“It’s a good fit for CEBS because of our interest in fostering career awareness and professional affiliation in group benefits and group retirement – rewarding and exciting career paths that are often overlooked in traditional academic models,” says Ann O’Neil, Academic Director of CEBS in Canada.

Student Wins $25,000 Scholarship in Design Challenge Contest

August 23rd, 2009

Recent High School Graduate Earns Chance to Work on Ad with DC Comics

TROY, Mich. (August 21, 2009) – The International Academy of Design & Technology (the Academy) in Troy has welcomed a new student to its school who was recently named the winner of the “2009 Design Scholarship Challenge.” Shane McCallion was among the finalists who flew to San Diego to visit Comic-Con 2009 last month.  While there, they presented their submissions to a panel of judges and McCallion was announced as the recipient of the national prize.

The contestants, who were a mix of young men and women, displayed their original designs to the judges.  Some drew by hand and others produced computer-generated graphics, all inspired by the DC Comics graphic novel, “Absolute Justice.”  DC Comics provided a library of assets for the contestants to use and they were free to develop their concepts based on their interpretation and research.  The winner, McCallion, expressed his own intrigue in the dark side of the series by coming up with the caption: “Which side will you serve?”  He combined elements of good vs. evil in his depiction of three classic heroes and their rivals.

The judging criterion was based on execution against the creative brief, creativity/originality, aesthetics, the design process and the presentation to the panel. The final round was conducted by a national panel including representatives from DC Comics.

”Shane showed ingenuity and creativity, as well as a unique approach to the challenge” said Steve Rotterdam, senior vice president of sales & marketing for DC Comics.

About the Academy

The International Academy of Design & Technology was originally founded in Chicago in 1977.  The Troy campus was established in 2003 to help Michigan students develop their skills and abilities needed for success in the fields of design and technology. Arizona Private School Association Awards Collins College Top Spots

August 21st, 2009

PHOENIX, AZ (August 20, 2009) – For the last 31 years, Collins College has stood out as one of the state’s best options for creative-minded students, offering bachelor of arts and associate degrees in various areas of technology and design. The school was recently honored with several achievements by the Arizona Private School Association (APSA), winning awards in three separate areas, including Best Retention and Completion; Best Student Organization and Best Placement Practice.

“The recognition is an indicator that we’re delivering on our promises, guiding students throughout the course of their education, and inevitably seeing them fill vital roles in the marketplace upon graduation,” said Collins College President Dr. Joshua Padron. “Above all, we’re just thrilled to be able to offer students an unrivaled, quality education, and support them as they pursue new and second careers.”

According to APSA, there are approximately 200 private schools operating in Arizona, with more enrolled students than the state university system combined. Member schools cover a wide spectrum ranging from general education and technical schools to highly specialized trade institutes.

“While each recognition is equally important, we’re particularly proud of the best placement practice award, as students are facing greater challenges than ever in today’s economy,” said Padron. “Creative industries are fiercely competitive and our graduates are entering the market with confidence and standing out because of their job readiness.”

Collins students are provided every resource available, and are even taught through focused preparedness classes how to stand out in a competitive market saturated with qualified candidates. Some of the school’s best practices include career management curriculum, an alumni network, workshops, networking events and even a “wall of wisdom,” which offers real-world advice directly from past students to current students that may be feeling the strain of today’s market-related pressures.

Collins College is located in Phoenix and has a nationwide online presence, with an enrollment of approximately 1,200. Earlier this year the school opened a new 70,000 square foot facility in the Cotton Center Business Complex. For more information, please visit http://www.collinscollege.edu.

Landmark decision by City Council brings Centennial College closer to restoration of Guild Inn

August 19th, 2009

Toronto, August, 2009 – Toronto City Council today endorsed the terms of a Letter of Intent with Centennial College, moving the college one step closer in its efforts to redevelop the historic Guild Inn property in Scarborough.

Centennial can now enter into binding lease negotiations with City of Toronto staff to finalize a 76-year sub-lease agreement for the 6.8-acre footprint of the original hotel site, situated within an 80-acre lakeside park that the City of Toronto leases from the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority.

“The Guild Inn project epitomizes Centennial’s commitment to Scarborough. As part of our vision to transform lives and communities through learning, it gives us another way to contribute to the economic, educational and cultural life of our community, while preserving and revitalizing a beloved landmark,” says Ann Buller, President and CEO, Centennial College. “If we have found a way to save it, everyone – the college, the city and the community – will enjoy the benefits.”

Centennial has proposed to redevelop the site as a new hotel and conference centre complex. As part of this project, the college intends to restore the historic Bickford Residence, a portion of which will house the research and learning resources of its Culture and Heritage Institute. It is expected to operate on a commercially viable basis while providing training opportunities for students from Centennial’s School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culture and related college degree programs.

City Council’s decision on August 5 marks the culmination of a long and intense negotiation process that balances the commercial interests of prospective hotel developers and operators against the long-term civic and ecological value of the surrounding park. The resulting agreement is strongly supported by the surrounding community, Councillor Paul Ainslie and colleagues.

Centennial College’s unique corporate status and position of trust in the community makes the college an ideal choice to build upon the heritage and cultural properties of the site in the spirit of its visionary owners, Rosa and Spencer Clark. Although Centennial is not self-financing the redevelopment, the college is able to create a special purpose corporation to contract with private-sector hotel developers and operators, while separately anchoring a land lease agreement with the City of Toronto to secure the site.

Western State University College of Law Receives Full Accreditation Approval from American Bar Association

August 6th, 2009

(Fullerton, Calif. – August 5, 2009)   Western State University College of Law, the oldest law school in Orange County, California, announced today that it has received full accreditation approval by the American Bar Association (ABA).

Western State University’s full approval follows the ABA Accreditation Committee’s recommendation to its Council of the Section on Legal Education and Admission in early July.  In 2005, the school was granted provisional approval by the ABA, signifying substantial compliance with ABA standards and a plan to bring the school into full compliance.  A school is only granted provisional approval for a maximum of five years.

“This full American Bar Association accreditation approval is one of the strongest testaments we can receive regarding the quality education we have provided to a diversity of students, and the commitment our faculty, staff, and administration have made in the future of the school,” says William E. Adams, Jr., new dean of Western State University.  “Not only have we demonstrated our compliance with the high academic standards that have been set before us, but we also feel more confident than ever that our graduates will be well-prepared to serve the legal community with excellence and a deserving sense of pride.”

In addition to becoming fully accredited by the ABA, Western State University remains accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California (CBE), which permits students to sit for the bar examination in California, and by the Senior Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Taught by a well qualified and experienced faculty, Western State’s teaching approach combines traditional classroom studies with computer technology and Internet-based education forums to help students learn more efficiently and effectively.  Western State University College of Law offers a full-time program, which normally can be completed within three years; and a part-time program, which makes it possible for a student to continue at his or her job while going to law school.

The right student financial aid for your college education

August 3rd, 2009

Finding yourself the kind of financial aid that can get you through college can be quite a trying task if you do not know what to look for or who to ask for help. There are actually a lot of options available to students when it comes to student financial aid, and the key to getting this kind of help is in knowing who to approach and to know firsthand what kind of aid you are looking for. There are two distinct types of financial aids that are available to college students these days, and these are student loans and student grants.

Going to school is an expensive endeavor. This is a fact that the national government as well as concerned private institutions worry about. Hence, the birth of education financial aids extended to students who are willing to pursue good education despite their financial incapacity. The difference between a student loan and a student grant is that with loans, you are expected to pay back what money you took out in a loan for your college education. When you get yourself a grant for your college education, you are actually getting yourself fees that you need not worry about paying back. In short, a grant is the best kind of student financial aid that college students aim for. A free college education is hard to come by and with a grant you are essentially going to college for free.

Where do you find these student grants and how can you avail of them? There are actually a number of institutions that do give out college grants to students who are deserving of these funds. You should know however that these funds are pretty hard to come by simply because a lot of students do try to obtain these kinds of funding for their own education.

There are a number of avenues you can look into when you are trying to get yourself a free college education with the use of the student financial aid called a grant. One of the avenues you can try out is a Federal Grant. Another is a State Grant, and the final choice you have is a Private Grant. All of these student grants can help you get through college if you qualify for one. How do you qualify for one?

When you are applying for student financial aid like a Federal Grant, you should know that when you fill in a FAFSA application, you are already an applicant for any of the available Federal grants that are being given out to students every year. This includes the Work-Study program, the FSEOG, and the Federal Pell Grant. For State Grants, the focus is more on aptitude than need. While each state has its own qualifications for students who might get a grant from them, having good grades along with the need for free education very well qualifies you for getting a State grant.

Private student grants, on the other hand, are actually similar to scholarships. These are given out by private institutions and companies to students that exhibit a huge potential of succeeding in their chosen field as well as having the need for financial aid.

When looking for the right student financial aid for your college education, you can try looking at the many different student grants that are available to you.

Recession? Centennial College endowment fund grows by unprecedented 42 per cent

July 31st, 2009

Toronto, July 2009, – While the economic downturn has presented challenges for some post-secondary institutions, Centennial College has enriched its endowment fund by $2.3 million in the past year – an unprecedented growth rate of 42 per cent – for a total of $7,844,652.

Centennial’s endowment fund represents part of the sums of money the institution has raised from private donors, as well as matching funds from government sources. Interest earned from the fund is used to support scholarships distributed to deserving Centennial students each year.

Part of the $2.3 million included $868,890 in Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) money received from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities based on an approved ceiling for 2008-09. Unutilized “ceiling room” was redistributed to schools that exceeded their approved 08/09 limits. Consequently, Centennial received an additional $775,203 from the Ministry this year.

Thanks to a record year, Centennial ranks fourth among Ontario’s 24 public colleges and second among GTA colleges in fundraising activity. Centennial is relatively new to fundraising; in 2004, the college’s endowment fund was valued at approximately $550,000.

The welcome fund growth comes on the heels of the news that Centennial has emerged from fiscal year 2008-2009 with a budget surplus, and is planning faculty hires this year while other schools contemplate a hiring freeze.

Centennial College is Ontario’s first community college, established in 1966, primarily serving the eastern portion of the Greater Toronto Area through four campuses. It has earned a reputation for exemplary teaching, innovative programming and extensive partnership building.

Collins College Students Working on New, Wild West Hip-Hop Reality Show

July 24th, 2009

Students make up entire pre-production and production crew of “The Showdown”

Collins College students, along with instructors Vic Barrow and Rob Agee, are producing a reality TV show called “The Showdown.” The shoot lasts a minimum of 12 hours a day, every day, giving film and video production students hands-on experience with the making of a television series. “The Showdown” is a western themed, hip-hop reality show that requires contestants to endure a primitive lifestyle lacking everything from cell phones to indoor plumbing. Challenges such as mechanical bull riding settle all disagreements. Instead of shoot-outs, contestants confront one another at high noon in a show-down using wits and words in the form of MC battles. Contestants can be voted off the show by the viewing audience via cell phone.

An all-volunteer, 22-person Collins College student crew is working with 12 main cast members (not including extras). The 12-week filming period began June 12 at the Goldfield Ghost Town, 4650 N. Mammoth Mine Road, in Goldfield, AZ. Shooting continues every day from 10am to 11pm, with the best photo opportunities taking place when the MC battle scenes are shot, starting around noon.

May 23, 2009:
Unitedworld School of Business, India’s first institute with an intelligent

campus, will help students with three years’ work experience build a career in finance or

general management from July.

The institute has campuses in Salt Lake, Mumbai and Ahmadabad.

“The highlight of this school of business is the i-campus or the intelligent-campus which is

not a standard ERP system which is a number-driven software,” said Tridibesh Bandyopadhyay,

the dean of studies.

“The system is a single interface. This is 24×7 and gives details of every student and their

performance for his/her multi-dimensional development. This will help us create employment.

It also helps us know trends of a class and specific students,” he added.

The students of a class will be analysed on a weekly basis and will be clustered into

homogeneous groups.

“The i-campus is geared towards education, better employability aspect of an individual and

daily feedback of each,” said Bandyopadhyay

The exposure is guaranteed because of the inter-campus mobility among the different

campuses. The exam pattern is set in a way so that it’s the same across campuses. The

faculty members are from universities such as Harvard, MIT, Princeton and LSE.

“Visiting faculty will only help second-year students in their specialisation,” said

Bandyopadhyay.

Students not only specialise in units such as marketing, finance and human resource but also

in retail management, agribusiness, entrepreneurship and international business.

“Due to the global economic slump our students will learn new paradigms about management

blended with ethics to develop a global mindset to address contemporary business issues

efficiently,” explained the dean.

June 30th, 2009

SearchMyCampus.com – India’s Number 1 Campus Classifieds is gearing up to help freshers with their biggest problem – affordable student housing that is located near or on campus. Apart from increasing its housing classifieds, the team is also working on other features like Tips  Information that help students make decisions about where to stay.

Delhi, India, June 29, 2009 – Its admission time again in almost every college across the country and student housing is one of the biggest needs fresher needs. To help new students make the right decision about where to stay around campus, SearchMyCampus is extending all its efforts towards increasing the amount of information it offers regarding student housing.

The team has extended all its resources to go out on field and make personal contact with housing providers across various campuses. They are helping housing providers post classifieds on the website advertising student property for rent. They are also encouraging students to post their requirements for roommates. As a result, no matter what the student’s budget or location, they should be able to find a suitable room and roommate near the campus with little or no difficulty.

Besides classifieds, the team is also working on answering several questions that students have regarding housing such as ‘What are the best areas to stay at around Delhi University’ or ‘What kind of rents can we expect for paying guest accommodation around Bangalore University ‘. This information is being collected by the website’s student representatives on campus. It is advice by senior students to freshers coming to college. While this feature is only available for select campuses at present, the team hopes to expand it to a large number of universities within a short period of time.

“We hope to offer students all the information they require regarding housing. This includes classifieds, tips and information, and a discussion forum where they can put forth their queries and have alumni or existing students answer these”, says Peyush Bansal, founder of SearchMyCampus.com.

While preparing for students’ housing need at the present admissions time, the team is also looking ahead to freshers’ needs on joining college. They will be publishing similar data and information for categories like books, tuitions and part time jobs soon.

Innovative counseling program extends services to OC

Evidence-Based ‘Parent-Child Interaction Therapy’ Now Offered at State-of-the-Art Mission Viejo Facility

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (April XX, 2009) – Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an unique interactive counseling program proven to enhance family relationships by coaching parents through a wireless earpiece, is now available in South Orange County. The evidence-based program is highly effective in helping parents increase their child’s ability to manage frustration, independence, self-control, listening and social skills. Child Guidance Center (CGC), a leading non-profit provider of psychological services and education solutions in Orange County, will now offer the forward-thinking counseling model through its new facility in Mission Viejo, Calif., located at 27451 Los Altos, Suite 240.

“We believe the program will be a welcome addition to South Orange County, where so many parents are raising young children,” said Lori Pack, executive director of Child Guidance Center. “Our services provide parents with the tools necessary to achieve balance and harmony in the home. In many instances, a few slight adjustments can greatly impact common behavioral concerns and issues.”

Guiding Parents to In-the-Moment Success

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is a progressive coaching approach to family counseling that is clinically proven to build healthy relationships between a parent (or other caregiver) and child age 2-8. Observing from behind a one-way mirror, a therapist coaches a parent through a wireless earphone in the parent’s ear, providing specific instructions for relating to or managing the child’s behavior as it occurs. The user-friendly sessions allow for immediate and effective responses to the child’s behavior issues at the very moment they take place.

“The ‘invisible earpiece’ model has the power to transform family relationships by tackling behavior issues without a third party present,” said Nicole Gerth, a PCIT therapist at Child Guidance Center. “It really puts the parent in the role of ‘counselor.’ The child bonds to the parent—rather than to the clinician—as progress is made, allowing for a true preview of what happens between the parent and the child without a counselor in the room.”

Effective Program Improves Parenting Skills, Eliminates Negative Behaviors

Working with the child and parent simultaneously, the interactive program works to eliminate negative behaviors in children, decrease parental stress and improve parenting skills. Studies support its many benefits across genders and ethnic groups, and research shows that parents hold onto the skills acquired in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for up to six years after treatment. In addition, the skills generalize to other relationships in the home and neighborhood, ultimately contributing to a healthier, more-balanced community.

Child Guidance Center plans to expand the pioneering program into pre-schools, nurseries, child care facilities and other locations that would benefit from the program.

Parents Invited to Preview the Program’s Benefits

Through the end of May, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy will be hosting a series of exclusive parenting seminars at the new Mission Viejo facility, focusing on fundamental parenting topics including the “Power of Praise,” “Temper Tantrums 101” and “How to Connect Through Play.”

To make an appointment for PCIT services or for more information regarding the parenting seminars, please contact the Mission Viejo facility at 949-582-3958, or visit www.cgcoc.org.

Therapists also travel to several different school sites throughout Orange County to provide services. For more information, please call 714-953-4455 or visit www.cgcoc.org.

About Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is an innovative counseling program offered by Child Guidance Center (CGC) to build healthy relationships between parents and their children ages 2-10. Observing from behind a one way mirror, a therapist coaches a parent through a wireless earphone in the parent’s ear, providing specific instructions for relating to or managing the child’s behavior. The brief-term program is clinically proven to eliminate negative behaviors in children, decrease parental stress and improve parenting skills. The unique model allows the therapist to provide immediate and effective responses to a child’s behavior as it occurs. While CGC’s PCIT program has previously been dedicated to at-risk families, the Mission Viejo, Calif., facility now offers the program at an hourly rate to all families who live in South Orange County. Traditional counseling services will also be offered through this location. Proceeds from the Mission Viejo PCIT program will help provide counseling services for at-risk families. Unitedworld setting up three B-School campuses this year

May 5th, 2009

For Immediate Release

Kolkata, West Bengal, April 30th, 2009: Uniworld Edutech Ltd is going ahead with its plans of setting three B-School campuses this year in this economic climate.

Campuses of the Unitedworld School of Business, from the diversified United Group, will start in Mumbai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad by July, according to Mr. Ritesh Hada, Managing Director. With an investment of Rs.15 to Rs.20 crore for each institute, infrastructure is ready and admissions for the first batch have begun.

ADMISSION CRITERIA
“The batch capacity at each campus is 120 students for 2-year programme and 60 for one-year programme. Admissions will be conducted on the basis of CAT, XAT and GMAT scores. A certificate of Post- Graduate Programme in Management, equivalent to MBA, will be given at the end of the course”, said Mr. Hada.

One-year course will cost Rs 5 lakh, while the other programme would cost about Rs 2 lakh a year.

On of the viability of an MBA institute coming up in two cities that already have Indian Institute of Management, Mr Hada said,” we are no competition to the IIMs. The sectors are very clearly demarcated as to which management institute caters to what set of students.”
COURSES
Finance, Marketing and Agri-business would be some of the core courses on offer but the content would be subject to frequent changes to incorporate new trends and preferences of the evolving economy. Focus will remain on the employability of the students who would be trained by professionals, to reduce the gap between academics and real life-work situations.

“We want to reduce the gestation period of a student from passing out of an institute to being ready for the real world, which most of the time require a different set of experience than what is taught in schools” he said.
