Today (Nov. 2) Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) hosts the Next Wave Sky Industry Business Opportunity Forum and Taiwan’s Award Ceremony of European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) 2009.  Thorsten Rudolph, Chairman of ESNC, Johnsee Lee, President of ITRI, Wen-Hsin Chan, Consultant of Department of Industrial Technology, MOEA and Christian Stammel, CEO of Navispace AG discuss the huge business opportunities of the Galileo satellite system which is expected to create a market of NT$3.7 trillion in 2012.
GGIA enables Taiwan and Europe to complement each other and facilitate more exchange of their resources and R&D experiences.

EC started building Galileo satellite system in 2002, and expects to launch the system in 2013. Taiwan’s nation sales of satellite terminal devices account for 20.3% of world’s market share. MOEA is confident that Taiwan’s business firms will successfully become one of the major suppliers of satellite navigational products in the world.

In April this year, ITRI signed the LOI with AZO, sponsor of ESNC, to initiate cooperation between Taiwan’s business firms and their partners in the world.  In August, Navispace ordered 10,000 units of Smart Personal Trackers from Taiwan’s satellite navigational manufacturer Wonde Proud Technology Co., Ltd. through the effort of GGIA.  In October, Septentrio2 of Belgium visited 12 Taiwan companies, including Tai-Saw Technology Co., Ltd., Faraday Technology Corporation, Alchip Technologies, for purchasing satellite navigational hardware products and working out technical cooperation arrangements.

Information and Communications Research Laboratories (ICRL) of ITRI got the citation for design excellence at the ESNC 2009 in Taiwan area.

Aug 2009 – Eight members of staff from Monarch Aircraft Engineering will be getting their heads in the clouds this summer by taking to the skies as cabin crew for Monarch Airlines.

Six engineering apprentices, Michael Gepp, Rhys Jones, Liam Eeles, Phil Harding, Daniel Wiggins and Alistair Reid, based at London Luton Airport, have traded in their socket sets for safety demonstrations as part of an innovative new training programme designed to expose them to all aspects of the Monarch operation.

In addition, Chris Holt (45) and Ashley Sandford (29), both highly-qualified aircraft technicians based at Monarch’s engineering facility at Manchester Airport, will be experiencing life in the skies after applying for a secondment to work on Monarch’s scheduled and charter flights this summer.

Both groups successfully completed their cabin service training in July and, having earned their wings, will be operating on Monarch’s scheduled and charter flights until 31st October 2009.

Richard Mintern, Managing Director of Monarch Aircraft Engineering, commented: “We hope that all our apprentices and engineers will be given the opportunity to experience life as a cabin crew member during their career with Monarch. Paula Short won the Graduate category in the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce Profiting Through Skills – Excellence in Cumbria Awards 2009.

The 25-year-old Communications Advisor was presented with her prize by millionaire investor, and former star of TV’s Dragons’ Den, Richard Farleigh at the Rheged Centre, near Penrith.

Paula, who has worked at the Barrow site for 18 months, saw off stiff competition from two other candidates to land the award.

She said: “It was a surprise even to make the shortlist, so to actually win it given the standard of the other nominations was really pleasing.”

The awards, which were held on 14 May, celebrated the success of individuals and businesses who invest their time, money and effort into learning and development, benefiting both themselves and Cumbria’s economy.

Paula, who went to Chetwynde School and Barrow Sixth Form College before completing a BA (hons) degree in Marketing Management at Manchester Metropolitan Business School, is continuing to learn on the job.

As well as studying for a Diploma at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, she has also secured a workplace mentorship from the former leader of the Barrow Labour party, Terry Waiting, who now works as a Consultant for BAE Systems Submarine Solutions. Paula said: “I’m now able to pass on these new skills to the wider community as part of my role in the Corporate Responsibility team. It presents me with the opportunity to visit schools and colleges to explain what BAE Systems does, and hopefully help attract some of them to the business in the future.”  She was nominated for the award by Joe Sides, BAE Systems Submarine Solutions’ Corporate Responsibility Manager.
