Good Life Tampa Bay TV Show was there to kick off the first of three charitable Good Life Experience Events, hosted by Winky Wright, former boxing world champion, and Sean “P. Diddy” Combs.

February 1, 2010, St. Petersburg, Florida – Despite heavy rains, “The Good Life Experience” Super Bowl Party launched without dampened spirits for Super Bowl week 2009. Event co-hosts Winky Wright and Sean P. Diddy Combs turned The Venue entertainment complex into party central for star celebrities and athletes. Good Life Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay’s premier lifestyle show that reports on local flavor from the fast-growing Tampa Bay market, was there to kick off the festivities.

Much has been written about the ‘veterans of the Second World War. Books like Tom Brokaw’s nostalgic pean “The Greatest Generation” have become our institutional memory. We know these veterans as ’soldier heroes’ —altogether different than their self-absorbed alienated predecessors of the first World War—and their ugly and bitter successors in Vietnam— these men got back to the business of making America great with nary a hiccup, and hardly a complaint. But was their transition so seamless; their war put aside so easily. Did their suffering really end—when, as they say, the shooting stopped?

Our guest tonight is University of Pennsylvania Professor of History Thomas Childers. Professor Childers received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Tennessee and earned his Ph.D. in History from Harvard University.

In addition to his position at Penn, Professor Childers has held visiting professorships at Trinity Hall College, Cambridge, Smith College, and Swarthmore College. He is a popular lecturer abroad as well, in London, Oxford, Berlin, and Munich.

Professor Childers has won several teaching awards, including the Ira T. Abrahms Award for Distinguished Teaching and Challenging Teaching in the Arts and Sciences, the Richard S. Dunn Award for Distinguished Teaching in History, and the Senior Class Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Professor Childers is the author and editor of several books on modern German history and the Second World War including the Nazi Voter. And has recently completed completed a trilogy on the Second World War. The first volume, Wings of Morning: The Story of the Last American Bomber Shot Down over Germany in World War II, In The Shasows of War—and his most recent work—and the subject of our discussion tonight : “Soldier From the War Returning: the Greatest Generations troubled Homecoming from World War II”

Last week, we talked about allegations that had surfaced in 2008 about then-Candidate Obama’s close ties to the Association for Community Organizations for Reform Now (better known by its acronym ACORN).

At the time, ACORN’s voter registration efforts were coming under scrutiny in 15 states—including the battleground states of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Critics also accused ACORN of participating in billions of dollars in home loans to risky or unqualified borrowers.

While Senator Obama admitted working for an organization called ‘Project Vote’—he denied on his website entitled “Fight The Smears” any affiliation to ACORN itself.

In July, 2008, an employee of ACORN, Anita MonCrief, spoke to New York Times reporter Stephanie Strom about ties between the Obama campaign and ACORN. She provided proof that  the Obama campaign had provided a list of its maxxed out donors to ACORN to solicit—a violation of FEC law. The New York Times never printed the story. Since that time, Ms. MonCrief has testified about ACORN before Congress and in a case against ACORN in Pennsylvania brought by that state’s Attorney General.

Anita MonCrief is a blogger and writer in Washington, DC. She attended o the University of Alabama where she majored in political science and history. She was one of the founding members of the Alabama Model United Nations, a team that was ranked in the Top Ten in the Southeast.

Anita has worked with the American Bar Association’s Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative;), where she assisted with the creation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Assessment Index. She has also worked with the International Crisis Group; the Grameen Foundation and Project Vote/ACORN. Anita has partnered with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe on their mission to Macedonia as an election observer.In 2005, she joined the Strategic Writing and Research Department of ACORN Political Operations and its affiliate Project Vote. In 2008 Anita came forward to expose the damage that ACORN has done to the impoverished and marginalized communities, as well as its rampant voter fraud, and gained notoriety as the ACORN whistle blower.

Even more to the point: With its well-painted exotic locales, fancy clothes and regular doses of silly humor, it is girls-night-in entertaining, even with a few areas in need of firmer editing. There should always be room for a romantic comedy offering a bit of glamour and wit.

Of course, being light-hearted fare, the star-crossed lovers never have to go to any great lengths to be together — they aren’t trapped within the borders of Jordan, for example — but the obstacles they do confront, particularly disapproving family members, are readily accessible to virtually any audience. And the families are, in many ways, what make this film. It is a trio of women, Antonia Frering, Siddiqua Akhtar and Nina Wadia, as two mothers and a housekeeper, respectively, who give us the best giggles of the piece and ultimately its’ flavor and charm. Sarif knows exactly how to deliver a comedy confection especially when competing ethnicities are part of the fun. And staying true to her own novel on which the film is based, she declines to inject the kind of back-flipping plot devices jammed into every rom-com produced by Hollywood these days.

The lovers themselves, Lisa Ray as the feisty Jordanian-raised Palestinian, Tala, and Sheetal Sheth as the soulful London-dwelling Indian Muslim, Leyla, are an attractive and compelling pair even if Sheth is rather more convincing in her amorous angst. Still, with an eye on the bigger commercial prize, this is lesbian-lite with nothing racier than a few relatively chaste cuddles set to nice music. And yet, there is something sincerely refreshing about any slickly produced movie that doesn’t exploit its women amid an improbable plot.
