Increase In Cattle Farming Causing 12 Billion Tons of Carbon Dioxide Emissions

November 12th, 2010

An increase in the demand for beef, leather and other agricultural products has lead to intensified deforestation in the Amazon Jungle, according to recent report released by several leading environmental groups. This amounts to a yearly loss of more than 30 million acres of tropical forests, a staggering number raising global concern due to its impact on biodiversity and climate change. The root cause, an increase in cattle ranching, has been responsible for up to 12 billion tons of additional carbon dioxide emission in the last decade – the equivalent of two years worth of carbon dioxide emissions from US infrastructure projects. CO2 is considered the number one contributor to global climate change.

According to leading environmentalists, the factors that constantly driving deforestation include:

LoggingCutting down trees for timber to meet an ever-increasing global demand.

Cattle Ranching – Increase in Western meat consumption and leather demand has intensified cattle ranching. Farmers have been entering the lucrative industry, cutting trees to ranch cattle.  It is estimated that 18 percent of the total anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission is due to the livestock industry.

Soybean plantation – Cultivation of soybeans on cleared land to feed the increasing number to cattle.

Squatters – Growing numbers of people are taking over unclaimed farmland by clearing land.

Infrastructure Projects -Building of dams and roads also threaten forests, as one of the major threats a hydroelectric dam can cause is intensive flooding.

Last, ineffective government regulations have been considered a major catalyst behind constant deforestation.

Environmental groups are urging people worldwide to call for a decrease in cattle farming and the prevention of tree cutting. For further information regarding Amazon deforestation and programs to save the rainforests, please visit http://www.premieretreeservices.com

Smart Landscaping Can Reduce Hotel Water Costs

June 22nd, 2010

Smart Landscape Watering Systems Reduce Hotel Water Costs while Maintaining a Beautiful and Healthy Landscape

Summer is here and most green hotels have geared up to make sure their lawn and landscape stays green and beautiful for the enjoyment of guests and improved occupancy rates. As you start switching on those irrigation systems, now is a good time to think about controlling utility costs and being environmentally friendly.

Over watering of lawns and landscapes is the most common cause of water waste. It not only runs up the utility bills, but also can cause other problems including:

  • Plant diseases such as root rot
  • Run-off from your lawn and landscape, which may contribute to the pollution of streams and lakes (because lawn care chemicals go along with it)
  • More frequent mowing and pruning from rapid plant growth
  • Excessive “green waste,” which has become a costly waste disposal problem for cities and counties

How can a hotel use water efficiently with an irrigation system?

Recent innovative technologies can now help green hotel operators reduce wasted water and decrease utility expenses. A weather based watering technology, SmartLine, has proven to be an economical choice for green hotels of any size.

How Does it Work?

Stated simply, it’s like a thermostat for the landscape.  The Weathermatic SmartLine System replaces the existing sprinkler timers that operate like the old egg timer.  The SmartLine System uses weather readings from a small, on-property weather station to automatically calculate precise run times for the plants in each zone. It uses the sprinkler precipitation rates, soil type, and slope to apply water in run and soak cycles at a rate the soil can accept.  This technology also eliminates the need to have lawn maintenance crews manually adjusting controllers to match the ever-changing weather conditions.

Real Dollar and Water Savings

With over 200,000 installations in 80 countries, SmartLine water savings range from 20 to over 60% and wasteful irrigation runoff is virtually eliminated.  This high efficiency system results in a return on investment of typically 12 months or less.

You Only Know What You Measure

Another helpful feature is the SmartLine Water Management Service that includes access to monthly reporting detailing site-specific water savings and performance compared to water usage goals considering the actual weather conditions. This could come in very handy not only as a monitoring device, but to verify the entire irrigation system is working properly.

The Debate on Global Warming is Never Ending but Obama is Determined to Make a Change

June 9th, 2010

We all are aware of global warming and its causes. The International Panel on Climate Change estimates an overall temperature increase of about 5 degrees by the closing stage of this century. It is more than sufficient for foremost changes. Just the same as in the rising seawater level, in food production and rainfall.

So is global warming just a bunch of hot air or is it a serious concern? To answer that question we need to understand more about global warming and its causes.

The technicalities of global warming are straightforward. There is a lot of carbon dioxide (CO2) in our environment. Out planet attracts heat from the sun and emits much of it back into the atmosphere or else we would cook. But currently the Earth reserves more heat from the sun, about 0.85 per square meter, than it emits back into atmosphere. It is mostly that CO2 obstructs solar rays back into space which produces greenhouse effect.

Presently the atmospheric CO2 content is almost 380 parts per million, up from about a thousand years ago at a level of 280 ppm. Calculations are that it may rise up to 500 ppm by the finish of this century. Also, CO2 persists around for a long time. It takes around one hundred thousand years for CO2 present in atmosphere to diminish by almost 63% through natural progression.

What are the activities that generate a lot of CO2 in the environment? This has happened due to huge amount of fossil fuels which we have been burning since the beginning of the industrial revolution, almost 300 years ago. These fuels play a big role in global warming and its causes.

Oil and coal are the only support in the production of power, which powers our transport. It is quite obvious that in today’s world, population is growing day by day. Every person in this world desires for food, clothing, housing and leisure. So if everybody is trying for a bigger home, latest electronics and a nicest car, we all are in a fix.

We all are in a fix due to the fact that our planet is not capable of fulfilling all our requirements when everybody wants to follow the latest trends. Our way of living and ethics have much to deal with why we need too many things than what we actually have.

The Industrial Revolution beginning in 16th century produced ideas about significance of an individual, about the utilization of material well-being. The way we think, about ourselves and about our environment is the issue. Do people give enough space to nature; enough space for slow and natural growth, for the environment? I think not. It is our ethics and ideas which keep on emitting CO2 in the environment and are creating global warming.

Natural Cycles, including the sun also adds to global warming and its causes. Our planet is now obtaining thirty percent more solar rays than what it used to get 4.6 billion years ago. And there have always been sequences of interglacial periods and ice ages, all relying on our planet’s orbit, solar radiation strength and variations in ocean currents.

The previous Little Ice Age was in the middle of 1400 and 1840 with considerably lower temperatures. And such events are parts of 1500 year cycles. Currently our planet is at the finish of an interglacial, warmer time and is ready for a cool down. But it appears that we are not going to let it proceed. The large amount of CO2, predominantly over the previous 45 years, does not fit into any natural cycle.

We cannot blame the sun. It is us at fault. What to do is the real question. The reality is that global warming will be with us for times ahead, whether we discontinue emitting CO2 into the atmosphere today or not. It will keep on getting worse as fast-developing economies, including billions of citizens in the USA, China and India continue to rely on fossil fuels.

According to President Obama, Global Warming is a serious threat to our environment. A House bill has been passed that mandates a 17% reduction in C02 emmisions by 2020. It also calls for an 80% reduction by 2050. So is someone actually going to take the time to read this thousand-page bill or will it sit there for years like all the rest?

We cannot negate the fact that global warming is a serious issue. It has been the focus of several political debates and will continue to remain a hot topic. The only way we, as citizens of this earth, can help slow down global warming is to live a greener life. Becoming the Norm

December 29th, 2009

In far flung destinations with hot humid climates air conditioning is considered to be the ‘norm’.  But in the UK where weather is notoriously fickle, especially in the summer, air conditioning has up till now, not played an important feature in our homes.

Interest in air conditioning has become more prevalent with each passing year, the reason being, with global warming never far from the news agenda, is making air conditioning more of a necessity than a desire, and very soon will become the ‘norm’ for most house owners in the UK.

Consider this, climate change is already with us and in the future we may be in need of a solution that will suit our home environment all year round, but at the same time reduce our carbon footprint.  According to the Carbon Trust, buildings account for about 40% of the total carbon emissions in the UK.

A greater demand has been placed on businesses to be more energy efficient; and coupled with Government legislation to reduce carbon emissions, manufactures of air conditioning systems are now providing systems with dual purpose, being an air cooler in the heat of the summer months and a heater in the winter, thus making it more energy efficient and cost effective.

All systems installed by Climachill have ‘heat pump’ technology, which is up to five times greater energy efficient than a traditional heating system.  This means that the system can be run in reverse using heat transfer from one place to another in order to provide air conditioning or heating.  Air conditioning heating is by far the most efficient way of heating.

Climachill leading air conditioning and Electrical contractors can undertake all new air conditioning installations as well as planned maintenance.  Providing services for domestic and commercial premises also portable units and is definitely at the top of their game and can submit the full package. This company has many strings to its proverbial bow and also welcomes volume purchases from businesses of all kinds, importing high quality goods maintains their stock levels so are able to fulfill large orders in a timely manner.

A spokesman for Climachill said “we totally understand air conditioning we sell portable air conditioners and install air conditioning systems to businesses and house owners alike”.  He went on to say “we are not simply a website selling air conditioning products, we are very conscious of the impact our business may have on the environment and strive to supply the most energy efficient systems”.

Furnace and Heating System Maintenance in Winter Key to Battling Carbon Monoxide Poisoning in Homes

November 24th, 2009

Installing Carbon Monoxide Alarms is recommended as part of regular furnace and heating equipment maintenance.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning leads to hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries each year in homes. Such poisoning results primarily from automobiles left running in attached garages but also from portable generators, power tools, furnaces and heaters. At the onset of cold weather, we begin operating appliances and equipment that can generate carbon monoxide gas. This includes fuel-burning equipment and appliances – especially if they malfunction or are improperly ventilated. Premier Indoor Comfort Systems service technicians suggest that their clients’ heating and cooling systems receive annual maintenance checks in order to increase the unit’s efficiency and longevity, as well as to benefit the client with savings on their utility costs and to promote an environmentally safer atmosphere for their family. They recommend that all homes install a Carbon Monoxide Alarm.

Carbon monoxide gas is deadly, even though it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It may kill quickly or slowly, and there are no warning signs specific to carbon monoxide. Even when it is not fatal, carbon monoxide can cause permanent damage to the brain and other parts of the nervous system. It affects people of all ages, but Infants and children are even more susceptible than adults. One study supported by the EPA found that 75 percent of homes had carbon monoxide from the garage inside of the home. Homeowners have very little ability to sense the presence of CO without detectors, unlike many other indoor polluting events. As of January 1, 2009 all new homes in Georgia are required to have a Carbon Monoxide alarm. Premier Indoor Comfort Systems strongly recommends that all homes have a Carbon Monoxide Alarm. They are inexpensive and can be installed as part of the regular furnace and heating equipment maintenance.

Premier Indoor Comfort Systems has provided heating, ventilation, and air conditioning services to both commercial and residential clients in Georgia since its founding in 1999. They are a full service provider, which includes: New construction installations, Light Commercial installations, Duct modifications, High velocity mini duct systems, Geothermal systems, Radiant floor heating systems, Ductless split systems, Air Purification systems, Humidification systems, Dehumidification systems, Zoning systems, Fresh air ventilation systems, Exhaust systems, Duct Cleaning, and Wine Coolers. Inside Business Report With Fred Thompson “Greening of America”

November 1st, 2009

The producers of Inside Business are pleased to announce a special series, Greening of America, highlighting the multitude of ways Americans are becoming environmentally responsible.  The show marries an unrivaled host, Fred Thompson, with a team of award-winning producers, and provides viewers new information that will impact their lives.
America’s capacity for leadership worldwide is undeniable.  On almost every level and by almost every measure, the U.S. holds a place of singular importance.  Unfortunately, our propensity for consumption has placed atop another, not-so-desirable list:  Despite possessing only 1/20th of the globe’s population, we nevertheless consume ¼ of its resources and materials.  We cannot, in good conscience, berate the Brazilians for clearing Amazon rainforest, or belabor the Chinese for burning coal, unless we undertake a leadership role in environmental causes domestically.
To that end, “Inside Business Report” series will explore the innovative approach Americans are taking to protect the environment.  We’ll speak with organizations and industry experts at the forefront of this green revolution, and we’ll discover eco-friendly products and technologies that benefit both our environment and society.

Topics for the “Greening of America” series include:

•    Sustainable Business Solutions for the 21st Century
•    Sustainable Technology Solutions for the 21st Century
•    Competitive Solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry

“Inside Business Report” identifies business-to-business stories for television and Internet content, and educates viewers on a wide-variety of emerging concepts. Remove Truck Oil and Diesel Stains the Natural Way

October 1st, 2009

Oil Gone Easy S-200 was reviewed in the UTV Weekly, a widely read online magazine about UTVs or side-by-sides. It is an eco-friendly product that makes use of bioremediation technology to remove truck oil and diesel stains naturally.

Bioremediation works by degrading the harmful hydrocarbons present in oil using the micro-organisms present in the atmosphere. As it does not cause any harm to the environment, this technology is recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This technology is used in several oil spill sites during oil spill cleanup.

Oil Gone Easy S-200 that uses this technology has proved to be very effective in cleaning up oil spills. It has been used in oil spill cleanup procedures in several spills, including the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in Alaska.

This oil stain remover can also be used to clean driveways, concrete, garages, soil, and gas-stations as well as oil stains from anywhere in the house. It works on any surface, including cement, concrete, and soil. It is available by the quart, 5-gallon buckets, and 55-gallon drums.

Using this oil stain remover is very simple, unlike other methods of oil spill cleanup. Oil spill cleanup using rags, sand, or kitty litter is not only tedious, but also does not produce the desired results. The harmful hydrocarbons present in the oil are also not completely eliminated.

Oil Gone Easy S-200, on the other hand, removes the stain efficiently as it makes use of special nutrients to attract bacteria, which break down the oil. Once this oil stain remover is poured on the stain it takes seven days to completely remove the stain.

This oil stain remover has other advantages too. It is waterproof and works no matter what the weather condition is. It is also non-flammable and also eliminates petrochemical odors.

Consumers looking for a good oil stain remover to cleanup truck oil and diesel stains safely and effectively, will find Oil Gone Easy S-200 useful.
