Dr. Megan Swanson Featured in the Journal of The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons

January 1st, 2012

Dr. Megan Swanson is a graduate of Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine. She completed her orthopedic residency training in University of Texas Southwestern and was able to finish the prestigious Otto E. Aufranc Fellowship in Adult Reconstruction at the New England Baptist Hospital. Recently, her article on hip arthroplasty was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Total hip arthroplasty is a procedure in which the hip joints are replaced by artificial joints. This is usually performed on patients that are 60 years old or above due to severe arthritis. Sometimes, though, this procedure is done on patients with fractures in the thigh bone or patients with hip joint tumors.

Dr. Swanson is currently part of the highly skilled orthopedic surgeons of Randolph Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. They offer services for patients with work-related and sports-related orthopedic illnesses or injuries. For more information, visit their website at http://www.randolphorthopedics.com.

New Breakthroughs Are Improving Outcomes After Cancer Surgery

July 15th, 2011

NEW YORK, NY-The Laparoscopic Physiology and Oncology Laboratory at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center is doing much to improve patient outcomes. The lab has determined how methods used to gain access to the abdominal cavity in order to perform surgery, alter the body’s ability to heal itself and to deal with cancer cells that may remain in the days and weeks following surgery. The lab has demonstrated that Minimally Invasive Surgical (MIS) methods are less injurious and result in fewer and less severe changes in the composition of the blood and immune system function.

The lab’s early study results suggest that major surgery (either open or laparoscopic) causes changes that would stimulate the growth of residual cancer in patients who had unforeseen circulating tumor cells after resection of the primary lesion. The lab’s purpose has been to better understand why tumor growth is stimulated after surgery and to find anti-cancer therapies that can be used during the month before and immediately following surgery.
This year the lab completed a series of studies that demonstrated that a combination of green tea extract and a supplement called siliphos, when given for a week before and for three weeks after surgery, significantly inhibits the growth of cancer cells both subcutaneously and in the liver during the preoperative period. It was also determined that this drug combination did not impair or inhibit wound healing (abdominal wall and gastric wound strength was assessed). The results of the final study were presented at the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons meeting this spring.
A Phase 1 study is planned for 2011 in which patients undergoing large bowel resection for cancer will have the opportunity to take these two drugs for the week prior and for 3 weeks after their operation. A study proposal has been submitted and representatives from the lab are soon meeting with the FDA to request permission to use this drug combination in humans. They hope to enroll 30-40 patients in the study.

For more information on this and other current studies, you can visit www.slrsurgery.org or call us at: (212) 523-7780.

Glaucoma Eye Test through Eyelid supports National Glaucoma Awareness Month – BiCOM sets up Free Eye Exam Events Worldwide

February 1st, 2011

BiCOM Inc. home of Glaucoma Eye Test Diaton supports National Glaucoma Awareness Month. It is imperative to get regular eye pressure (IOP) exams. Vision loss caused by Glaucoma can be slowed or halted with the proper medication. Getting an eye pressure screening has never been easier or safer with painless through the eyelid Tonometer Diaton aka Glaucoma Eye Test http://www.GlaucomaEyeTest.com .

The start of a new year signifies a new beginning to most, many people making resolutions to better their lives. Improving health is usually a top priority – but, visual health is often overlooked.  January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, the perfect opportunity to learn about “the sneak thief of sight”. Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness globally, with 70 million people affected. Glaucoma is an eye disease that gradually makes your vision “close in” on you, starting with peripheral (side) vision. Many people do not realize they have a problem, until the disease has progressed dramatically. Regular eye examinations and eye pressure (IOP) screenings are the best way to diagnose Glaucoma in its earliest stages.

Tonometer

Free Glaucoma Screening Event coordinated by Team BiCOM Inc

Tonometry (http://www.Tonometry.org ), or the measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP), lets physicians know whether you have elevated levels of pressure within your eyes which is a one of the most important factors of Glaucoma detection.

There are often no symptoms or pain associated with the onset of glaucoma.  As it progresses, a person may notice his or her side vision decreasing.  As the glaucoma worsens, the field of vision narrows and blindness may result.

Individuals at higher risk include African Americans over age 40; everyone over age 60, especially Mexican Americans; and people with a family history of glaucoma.

New technological breakthroughs allow pressure to be measured easier & safer than ever before. Diaton Tonometry is a unique approach with the device measuring IOP thought the upper eyelid, without need for eye drops, never touching the cornea, reducing risk of infection and allowing maximum comfort for the patient. Tonometer Diaton is ideal for mass screenings and many other situations where older methods of tonometry do not suffice. This new device can even be used in-home for any age group. For more info visit: http://www.TonometerDiaton.com

Glaucoma that goes undetected progresses rapidly, robbing one of their sight, independence and well-being. There are factors that play a role in who develops this disease such as age, race and genetics, but Glaucoma can affect everyone from babies to the elderly. 20 percent of adults have never visited an eye doctor, and more than 60 percent of respondents thought that glaucoma was preventable, according to the American Optometric Association’s (AOA) American Eye-Q™ survey.

Educational/Awareness campaigns have been launched by BiCOM Inc., the global distributor of transpalpebral Tonometer Diaton (http://www.GlaucomaEyeTest.com), with successful results. This is the key to fighting this disease – education and ease of getting IOP screened.

Atlanta Medical Malpractice Attorney Authors A Legal Book For Cancer Victims

December 6th, 2010

November 19, 2010, Atlanta, GA – Atlanta medical malpractice attorney Jeffrey H. Dover has authored a new book to help Georgia cancer victims understand their options after they’ve been diagnosed with cancer and also helps educate cancer victims about their legal rights if they’ve received bad medical care or if their cancer was misdiagnosed.

The book, I Have Cancer…Should It Have Been Caught Earlier?, reveals critical information people need when faced with this life-altering disease, including:

•    An overview of cancer, the types and symptoms of cancer, and treatment options.
•    A review of common errors in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
•    An explanation of medical malpractice in general, and specifically the laws as they apply in the state of Georgia.
•    Examples of medical malpractice to provide victims of bad medical care with a better understanding of how the situation might apply to them.
•    An overview of the legal process that cancer medical malpractice victims face.
•    How to go about choosing the right Georgia medical malpractice attorney.
•    What a cancer medical malpractice victim has to prove to win his or her case.
•    How a contingency fee works and why anyone can afford a lawyer for a medical malpractice claim because of it.

“If you or a loved one has cancer, you probably have many questions and concerns, and if you believe that your medical care has been less than ideal, your burden is even greater,” Dover explained. “My goal is to not only provide you with the most up-to-date information to help you understand your treatment options and the terminology associated with cancer, but to also educate you about your legal rights if you’ve suffered from bad medical care.”

According to the US National Cancer Institute, nearly half of all men and one third of all women will develop cancer in their lifetime, and the mortality rate is 23% in men and 20% in women.  “We understand that a diagnosis of cancer is a life-changing event,” Dover said. “Many victims of cancer are unprepared for their future, and my hope is that this book can help provide them with some peace of mind and a plan for what to do next.”

The book is published by Word Association Publishers and is available for $16.95 on Amazon.com.  As a public service, anyone in Georgia with a potential medical malpractice situation involving cancer may request a free copy of the book by visiting the Atlanta medical malpractice attorney page or the Atlanta cancer misdiagnosis attorney section.

Central lndia’s First Non Surgical Device Closure of Ventricular Septal Defect Performed by Cardiologist Dr. Girish Kawthekar and Team

July 16th, 2010

Indore , July 10th 2010 : Central India’s first Non Surgical Ventricular septal defect closure with device was performed on a 75 years old female, Mrs. Saran Kaur Gandhi on 4th May 2010. She hails from Khandwa. She was admitted to Choithram Hospital on 27th March 2010 in a critical condition after a severe heart attack. Due to her critical condition, emergency coronary angiography and angioplasty was done the very next day. During her recuperation, she was found to have a ventricular septal defect – which is a hole in one of the wall of the heart for which surgical closure is a solution. But her age and condition didn’t allow for the same. However, today, recent non- surgical device closure is possible which avoids many surgical problems. Hence, the doctors decided to do VSD closure with device with all explained risks to the patient and her relatives. So the procedure followed and performed successfully on 4thmay 2010 by Cardiologist Dr. Girish Kawthekar, Dr. Bhavesh, Dr. Nitin Modi and Dr. C.B. Chhabra.

Talking about this critical but successful procedure Dr. Girish Kawthekar said, “Initially, it was a tough operation. Generally, this problem has high mortality, but after the procedure, she recuperated fast. She has been discharged in stable condition and is fine now.”

The success of this operation proved Central India’s competency in performing critical cardiological operations. Our city is now capable and at par with world standards in this field.

Newer and technically demanding procedures are being regularly done and Dr. Kawthekar already has been pioneer to bring newer interventional procedures as angioplasty and valvuloplasty and other interventional procedures to the city.
