Sunshine compares travel trade Jan 09 – Jan 10

February 4th, 2010

The UK’s fastest growing online independent travel agent has released trading figures that show an 89% increase in sales in January 2010 when compared to January 2009 and has revealed which destinations have seen most bookings this year so far.

www.sunshine.co.uk has seen sales almost double from January 2009 to January 2010, with a sales increase of 89%, suggesting that things are looking bright for the travel and tourism industry this year. The number of bookings has risen by half and the number of passengers sent abroad has increased by 46% when compared to the same time in January last year.

These latest statistics from sunshine.co.uk follow a successful trading year in 2009, despite the recession, and highlight the fact that the travel industry is already picking up following the economic downturn. Other figures that further demonstrate this point are the most and least popular holiday destinations based on percentage share of bookings at sunshine.co.uk.

The site found that whilst Spain is still the most popular destination in terms of percentage share of bookings, the holiday location has seen only a marginal growth in terms of bookings since last year. Even though the USA only accounts for a small number of bookings on sunshine.co.uk in terms of share percentage, the actual number of bookings to the States has doubled when compared to January 2009.

In order, the destinations that have seen the biggest increase in bookings when compared to January 2009, along with the percentage increases figures are;

  1. Egypt – 111.6%
  2. Greece – 108.5%
  3. USA – 102.4%
  4. Turkey – 100.7%
  5. Portugal – 88.5%
  6. Malta – 80.9%
  7. Canaries – 72.4%
  8. Tunisia – 5.9%
  9. Spain – 3.7%

Chris Brown, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, commented on these trading figures;

“We are extremely lucky to have had such a successful year and see the increases in sales, passengers and bookings that we have. Whilst these statistics reflect the success of sunshine.co.uk, they also go a long way to proving that the travel industry as a whole is picking up.

He continued, “It’s interesting to see that whilst Spain still has the biggest percentage of market share when it comes to bookings on our site, it is actually destinations like the USA and Egypt that have seen the biggest percentage increase in bookings. The fact that bookings to Egypt and Greece have more than doubled in the past year, but the number of people opting to go to Spain has only grown marginally proves that the trends of the trade are changing.”

TNS Travel – Cruise at ‘Badi Jheel’ in Bhopal is Returning Home in December

November 11th, 2009

The Madhya Pradesh tourism industry is going to be seen in a new way by the introduction of Cruise at Badi Jheel.

New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh Tourism has the benefit of having world famous tourist attractions such as Khajuraho Temples and Sanchi Stupa under its supervision. Situated right in Central India, it has archeological marvels, historical heritage, popular wildlife preserves, and holy pilgrimage sites and temples of immense religious importance that attract domestic and foreign tourists alike. Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, upholds the charm of quaint, modernistic yet traditional town. Its various attractions have unquestionably included a cruise boat ride at the historic Upper Lake or Badi Jheel.

Last year, the water level in the lake was quite low. Hence, these cruise boat rides here were suspended for an indefinite period since September 26. Instead, tourists and residents of the city had to go as far as ‘Tawa Dam’ on the outskirts of the city to enjoy their favorite picnic pastime. This year, the monsoons in the state have been as benevolent as the share markets all over the world and the parched lake has been revitalized. Rising demand of tourists and healthier state of the lake led Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC) to give permission for the cruise rides to resume their trips across the lake from December.

The news is a welcome relief for tourists, travel agents and tour operators in the city. The government is taking active interest in promoting Indian tourism. Madhya Pradesh Tourism, in particular, has seen a steep rise in domestic tourism in past two years. From the ninth place in 2007, it managed to make it to the list of Top 5 Favorite Destinations for Domestic Tourists in 2008, when it attracted about 2.2 crore tourists to the state. Now, MPSTDC is actively working to achieve the target of making it to the list of Top 10 Favorite Destinations for Foreign Tourists and International Visitors in the near future.

The results of the survey show that the majority of the tourists (61%) recalled Dendrarii Park as the most impressive, more than a half of the respondents (52%) remembered Residential Complex “Millenium Tower” and the Sea Terminal Building. “Platforma” club finishes the top 3 with 49%.

It is remarkable that modern places were named among Sochi traditional culture sights. Below there are examples of tourists’ quotations’ explaining such choice:

“This “Millenium Tower” building can be seen from any point in Sochi, it is an example of modern architecture embodying “new” Sochi – a world-class resort.

“Millenium Tower” in Sochi to a certain extent can be compared only to “Moscow-City” complex in Moscow.

“Platforma” club is remarkable by its atmosphere – such a hot place. You need to come to Sochi just to drop in at it.”

“The “Blue Sea” is a restaurant with first-class service, which is so rare in other Russian and Ukrainian resorts. The atmosphere and menu variety are marvellous.”

“Deluxe Hotel “Rodina” offers elite accommodation and a wide range of services which cannot be seen even in some of the European five-star hotels.“

“Mayak” Aquapark offers unforgettable pastime for the whole family. Water attractions are an inseparable part of a sea holiday. What is important is that there should be plenty of them and they must be safe.”

“Thus nowadays tourists are searching not only for historical and cultural sights but are also interested in modern infrastructure, which is vital for a really good holiday.

DialAFlight See Upsurge In US Bookings

June 19th, 2009

June 2009 – American hoteliers and restaurateurs are slashing prices in the midst of the recession, leading to a US tourism bookings boom, according to cheap flight specialist Dialaflight. As the pound hit $1.60 this week, businesses suffering the worst season for years are offering considerable deals to the spendthrift traveller, in an attempt to lure them out of credit hibernation.

Major carriers are announcing bargain fares, and upgrades, extra nights and rock-bottom room rates are being offered by hotels across the States in an attempt to kick start the industry, following the biggest global recession in decades.

The first three months of 2009 saw inbound tourist spending on Visa cards total $11 billion, down from $12.9 billion in 2008. However, the U.S. remains a hugely popular destination. 79 percent of surveyed tourists have visited multiple times, and three out of four respondents believe they are likely to visit the U.S. in the next two years, with travellers from Canada, Mexico, South Korea and Japan being the most likely to return.

The Visa report confirms Dialaflight’s findings that, while tourists may research and plan their trips with more financial caution, their hunger for a bargain will win out over abstinence.

According to Bill Sheedy, President of Visa in North America, “The U.S. continues to be a major source market for global tourism. Americans’ travel intentions have not diminished for 2009 and 2010. However, travellers are increasingly price sensitive and seeking greater value when planning travel. As travellers are discerning in their choice of destinations and time of year for travel, Visa’s insight into tourist behaviour and attitudes in the U.S. and globally can support the tourism providers in capturing tourism revenues.”

Nacapuli – Some new twists to an old favorite

June 16th, 2009

Hike beyond the Ojo
Nacapuli, the amazing palm canyon north of San Carlos, is one of the most popular hiking destinations in this area.

I had hiked as far as the final water hole (ojo) at least a dozen times with anyone who visited me in tow. But I only recently continued up the canyon. The path is sometimes hard to find, but if you keep heading up the ravine, you will reach the end of the path after about one hour. The view is worth it a sweeping vista up and down the adjacent valley, all the way to the water.

Nacapuli Canyon starts out as an easy hike that becomes moderate, requiring some scrambling over boulders, up loose rock hills and through a tunnel in the rocks. And after the ojo, there are challenging sections with some haul-it-over-rocks required.

The path takes you through a narrow canyon surrounded by towering rock walls and lush green palm trees. The walls of the canyon are covered in various cacti, such as the ocotillo, cholla, and barrel. Beyond the ojo, the rocks are even more spectacular, going from a pink sand color to deep rust. Green palms stand against a red cliff background on a blinding blue sky canvas.

More than just a great hike, Nacapuli offers bird-watching and an opportunity to explore native rocks, flora and fauna. Fresh water springs provide the canyon with a humid tropical micro-climate that makes for a refreshing break from the dry hot desert.

Bike there and back
Driving the dirt road to the canyon, you may not notice that there is an incline the whole way there something that becomes painfully obvious when tackling the route by bike. The upside to biking there is that it’s all downhill home.

While coasting home, it’s tempting to look at the view of the water in the distance. Several bone-jarring drops into potholes or over rocks in the road have reminded me to also keep an eye on where I’m going.

There’s also plenty of wild life to distract you. I usually spot a number of interesting birds, including osprey and hawk. They are often perched on the tops of cacti, or soaring above the cliffs. Jackrabbit and roadrunner also frequent this area.

If you haven’t yet explored Nacapuli, just do it. You won’t be disappointed, no matter how short your hike in. And if you think you’ve already seen it, try it with a twist

2008 was a tough year for Tourism in Rocky Point

June 15th, 2009

Drop in number of visitors to area by 250,000

2008 was a difficult year for Puerto Penasco, Mexico in the area of tourism as 250,000 fewer visitors made there way to the area compared to the year before. This decreased represents a drop of at least 16% and had a domino affect throughout the city, reports Rafael Gonzalez Valenzuela, Director of the City Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV).

The OCV Director stated that, according to report from the port of entry in Lukeville, Arizona, which is the principal port accessing Penasco, they registered nearly 1.3 million foreigners passing through, when compared to 1.55 million in 2007.

He indicated in the area of national tourism the situation was a bit different, as the numbers of visitors in this realm was maintained at nearly 1.75 million. Nevertheless, this phenomenon was not sufficient to reverse the negative impact of the drop in foreign tourism.

Gonzalez Valenzuela explained in the area of hotel occupancy, 2008 ended with an average of 43%, compared to 58% from the previous year, reflecting a 15 point drop.

Base on this, he added, the final evaluation highlight 2008 was generally a poor year for Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point).

Among expectations for 2009, which is sure to be a complicated year and one in which it will be difficult for the situation to improve, they are still anticipating results from the intensive campaign to be carried out in California following the opening up of the coastal highway.

Gonzalez Valenzuela stated they have not done a full evaluation concerning the negative economic impact due to the drop in foreign tourism, but undoubtedly this has taken its toll on practically all service providers and businesses in the city.

The OCV Director remarked that based on this, the task is to strengthen promotional campaigns in order to promote the area in any way possible, given that the economic crisis is likely to last through 2009.

Lava Flows Visible From New Pinacate, Mexico

April 24th, 2009

Bet you don’t know what’s happening out in the middle of the Sonoran Desert right now, do ya? Yes, we all know that the snakes and reptiles are out, sunbathing and waiting for the next unsuspecting tourist or hiker to pass by before giving them the scare of their life. This “thing” is so big that it covers over 8,000 square feet and looks out over recent lava flows and those beautiful, tempting sand dunes.

In between Puerto Penasco and Sonoyta, Mexico, just outside a little town called Nayarit sits the most wonderful place in the Sonoran Desert . The Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is so richly diverse that it houses a variety of different plant life and wildlife, including the endangered Sonoran Pronghorn.

If you’re lucky, as you drive toward Rocky Point on Hwy. 8, you might catch sight of a big horn sheep off in the distance walking along the side of a mountain. Most of you pass right by the green sign that tells you that a world of discovery and adventure is just a little way up the dusty trail. More of you have probably taken notice within the last year or so when all of the signs and fences started going up to protect the area from vehicles. It took them a long time to be recognized as a Biosphere Reserve and it seems now is something finally come of it.

Along with housing great hiking and camping spots, the Pinacates is also home to volcanic craters such as the Cerro Colorado and the Elegante. They are massive when you get to stand on the edge of them and look down. The area is more commonly known for its peaks and craters, but there are a ton of people (biologists, botanists, etc.) who are thrilled at studying the diverse life (animal and plant) that can survive in such harsh conditions. (when you’re sweating in Phoenix or Penasco, they are boiling at the Reserve, there has even been snow spotted on top of the peaks – believe it or not!)

Their new cultural and visitor’s center will contain a wealth of information and services such as those found at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Cabeza Prieta national wildlife refuge and many other protected areas around the world. The lobby will contain all kinds of information about the area – the plants you will come across, the reptiles you might meet and the flying insects that might try to bite you during the night. The building will contain lots of photos, drawings, models and museum quality pieces – artifacts are often found in the area (please don’t remove them).

The center will be a wealth of cultural and historical information – from the library to the auditorium. There will be an onsite cafeteria, restrooms, a desert botanical garden and telescopes to view the beautiful scenery from.

Their cultural and visitor’s center will be a great addition for those who like to learn more about the area, nature or just want a diversion or fun activity.

April 1st, 2009

The Holland America shipping company revealed that in three years, with the construction of a Cruise Ship Home Port, Puerto Penasco will be taking another step to become a world-class tourist destination.

Holland America is planning to have one cruise ship a week on the Sea of Cortez route as of 2011, stated Simon Douwes, Planning and Scheduling Director, who recently confirmed that at the latest in three years, Puerto Penasco will become the site for the arrival and departure of cruise ships.

Plans are to make between 50 and 60 trips in the “World’s Aquarium”, departing from Puerto Penasco to Guaymas, Loreto, La Paz and Topolobampo, and then, returning to the port of departure.

He stated that the Sea of Cortez route is excellent for the company, because in only seven days they can go to six Mexican ports, which will provide a myriad of attractions.

On the other hand, the coordinator of the Commission for the Development of Tourist of the State Government, Epifanio Salido Pavlovich, explained that initially there will be a 14 day route that will depart from San Diego, California, and will travel to Puerto Penasco; then Guaymas, and the tour will conclude in the port of embarkation.

Representatives of Holland America and Carnival Corporation recently visited the area of Sandy Beach, where they intend to locate the cruise ship terminal in Puerto Penasco.

An assessment on the technical feasibility of building the wharf in this area of Rocky Point, Mexico was conducted with good results. Possible attractions in that area that could be provided to cruise ship customers were analyzed within the plans to set-up the Home Port. Some of these attractions are the Visitor Center of the “El Pinacate” Biosphere Reserve which is another option that can be provided to nautical tourists.

Government sources said that the Home Port project in Puerto Penasco is looking for the appropriate conditions to remain as the Sea of Cortez cruise ship route, while at the same time duly caring for the environment and furthering a sustainable activity through ecological balance.

On October 16, the first tourist cruise ship owned by Holland America arrived in Guaymas, Sonora, while the second one arrived on November 15. in both cases, 1,200 tourists enjoyed the region’s attractions.

A “home port” is a port of arrival, or rather, the site where cruises begin and end. It is something Mexico had never had up to now. This benefit will also include Puerto Penasco once the construction of the Home Port is completed a few kilometers from the US border.

The Government of Sonora, the Florida and Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), and the Coordination General of Ports and Merchant Marine, a body belonging to the Department of Communications and Transportation (SCT) entered into negotiations to make this project come true.
