Eddins Ford serving the Charlottesville, VA area releases details about the changes to Ford’s Michigan assembly plant to become more flexible in production.
Ford’s assembly plant in Michigan is now officially the first and only factory in the world producing multiple variously powered vehicles under a single roof. This factory will be producing cars that are gasoline-powered, electric-powered, hybrid and hybrid plug-ins.
This is an amazing feat for Ford and an automotive factory in terms for flexibility, since the factory previously only built the Ford Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator, both large SUVs. Right now, after the plant’s conversion, Ford will be producing the following cars; Ford Focus, Focus ST, Focus Electric, C-Max Energi and C-Max Hybrid.
With an incredible investment of $550 million and almost a 25% increase in their workforce, the factory underwent some major changes to accommodate the multiple-vehicle lineup production. Training was possibly the biggest step in the plant’s conversion because of the sheer complexity of the tasks and the changes between each model coming down the line.
James Tetreault, vice president-North America manufacturing, tells Wards Auto, “A lot of these people have a complex flexible job (that) changes every time, and they’ve got to remember up to 10 elements that are different than the previous vehicle. It’s a definite training challenge to get everybody geared up to do that.”
Ford is very excited about the progress of their Michigan assembly plant and says that by producing multiple vehicles at a single plant they can reduce manufacturing costs while increasing capacity, and even better respond to consumer demand. This innovative plant will likely be used as a model and blueprint to create more flexible assembly plants for Ford.
