Garden tools and equipment that can make taking care of your garden look so easy
August 6th, 2009A garden is as good as the garden tools that are used on it. This by no means implies that gardeners are redundant, it just goes to show that without the proper garden equipment the best of gardeners cannot get the desirable results no matter how green their fingers. Choosing the correct kind of garden tools based on ones requirement and proper storage of them is an absolute must for maintaining a beautiful garden.
A wide range of garden equipment is available in the market that can make this exercise highly simple and a lot of fun. A thorough study of the various garden tools to check out the ones that really work for you is important before investing in any garden equipment. Garden tools that have wooden handles should be chosen with extra care as some kinds of wood are prone to splintering. Wood that is straight-grained like ash or hickory makes good wooden handles. The handles should also be non-slippery and have soft grips so as to not put extra pressure on your hands while gardening. For those suffering from back problems, garden tools with longer handles should be opted for.
Metal garden tools are generally made of either high-grade stainless steel or high carbon steel. High carbon steel is an iron alloy that has more than 0.5% carbon. Such steel has immense strength but the increased amount of carbon makes it more brittle. Stainless steel is an alloy that has chromium added to it. This addition of chromium makes it highly resistant to corrosion and rust. Garden equipment is made from both these steels and the kind that you buy should be governed by your requirements. Lightweight and rust resistant tools are generally preferable.
Gardening involves a number of activities.
Digging and weeding: The very first step in creating a garden involves digging and weeding. Pitchforks, rakes, shovels are all important garden equipment which help in preparing the ground for planting seeds.
The best shovels are those that have a tapered blade. Look for one with a flat part on the top of the blade; this will help in protecting your feet when you have to repeatedly use them to drive the shovel into the ground. Wooden handles might not be as strong as metal or fiberglass handles but they can absorb shock better. Hence for rocky terrains where you might inadvertently hit rocks while digging wooden handles with straight grains are preferred. Forks and spades work best if their blades are made of high carbon forged steel. A single piece of steel should be used to make the spade blade.
Watering: Garden hoses with a 5/8 inch diameter are recommended for watering lawns. Attaching a spray attachment to the hose can help in watering the more delicate plants and shrubs.
Trimming and cutting: Shears, clippers and pruners are all trimming gardening tools which can be used for trimming smaller plants. Loppers and huge scissors are generally used for bigger trimming jobs.
In order to cultivate an interest for gardening in young children some manufacturers have come up with an apprentice range of garden equipment which is light, practical and safe. These are ideal for the budding gardeners to learn the enjoy gardening.
Choosing the right kind of garden tools and garden equipment is very important in order to maintain a garden that can be an owner’s pride. There are several ranges which are easily available in the market and even online.
