Mitchell Hyundai celebrates the 15th anniversary of Hyundai Hope On Wheels with reflection on what has been achieved.
At the New York International Auto Show, Hyundai announced that, in partner with its dealerships across America, it would launch the 15th year of fighting childhood cancer through the nonprofit Hyundai Hope On Wheels. Mitchell Hyundai celebrates the success the program has seen and the success that is ahead.
In 2013, Hyundai will donate $14 million to pediatric cancer research institutions across America. That will bring the total amount donated by Hope On Wheels to $72 million since 1998. On March 28, the Borough of Manhattan and the New York City Mayor’s Office declared March 28th “Hyundai Hope On Wheels Day” for New York City.
“Hyundai and its dealers remain committed to helping children in the fight against pediatric cancer,” said Hyundai President and CEO John Krafcik. “We are dedicated to providing crucial research dollars that will lead to finding cures and better treatment protocols for these precious children impacted by cancer. While cure rates approach 80% for some forms of pediatric cancer, far too many children and families are devastated by the disease. We are proud of our 15-year milestone for Hyundai Hope On Wheels, and remain keenly aware that there is much more work to be done.”
When it began in 1998, Hope On Wheels was a local initiative between Hyundai and a group of New England dealers. Now, it is recognized as a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The mission is to fund pediatric cancer research in partnership with Children’s Oncology Group institutions and raise public awareness about childhood cancer.
During 2013, 81 grants will be given out through the Scholar Grant and Hope Grant programs. A Scholar Grant is a one-year $75,000 grant for promising young researchers and patient care programs. The Hope Grant is a two-year $250,000 grant for innovative research.
The grants are presented throughout the year during the Handprint Ceremony during which the handprints of childhood cancer patients are placed on a 2013 Santa Fe Sport. That Santa Fe travels to all Hope On Wheels events to raise awareness.
