Montenegro is located in South East Europe and shares borders with Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania.
The country declared its independence in 2006 and since then is seeking to attract new tourists mainly to its coastal region in the Adriatic sea, facing Italy.

Beyond the wonderful 73km coast line, Montenegro has a number of alternative destinations such as the Durmitor National Park which is a a UNESCO World Heritage site as well as numerous mountains, canyons and rivers.

A number of initiatives and programs have been running during the last years for the establishment of sustainable tourism in its urban and rural forms. Among the ones we found the following were the most interesting:

- EXPEDITIO, a local ngo working on sustainability issues, worked on a eco-hotel room design and among 34 submitted entries, EXPEDITIO has been awarded recognition for a solution the concept of which is based on an ecological approach to designing. Read more about that here.

- Centre for Sustainable Tourism Initiatives,  a another local organization, hosted a familiarization trip (click to see trip details) for 8 Exodus-certified guides to test tours developed by CSTI after receiving certification training from the British tour operator Exodus. Based on their experience, Exodus selected two tours for inclusion in their catalogue which is viewed internationally.

EXPEDITIO is is a non-government and non-profit association which mission is encouraging sustainable space development as well as enhancing urban and rural areas in Montenegro and region, through activity in the fields of architecture, urban planning, town planning, environmental protection, and public advocacy.
