Home Brew Death Leads to Calls to End of Prohibition
July 1st, 2010The death of a Cairns man has led to calls for the lifting of alcohol bans in Aboriginal Communities. The Man aged in his late 40′s, died after consuming an alcoholic home brew made from Vegemite.
The Cairns Base Hospital reports there have been a number of admissions from ‘Bad Grog”. A local Politician, Mr. Katter, yesterday called for a relaxating of the tough alcohol laws. He believes that the prohibition has increased the use of illicitly brewed alcohol as well as leading to a marked increase in the numbers of “sly groggers”.
A spokesman for the dead man said he had been drinking at home alone. He also added that what the government has done is “a breach of our civil rights which is not working”. He also believes bootleggers are not brewing the alcohol for long enough, making their concoctions extremely dangerous.
Vegemite, as well as sugar and orange juice seem to be the main ingredients. As well as all forms of alcohol, commercial home brew kits and ingredients are also included in the Indigenous Alcohol Management Plans.
