In Spanish, it’s not a latte

July 2nd, 2009

Miramar, Florida  – The French call it café au lait.  In Italy, of course, it’s caffe latte.  But in Spain and Latin America – and in the Cuban bastions of Miami – the combination of bold coffee (sometimes espresso) with scalded milk is café con leche or sometimes cafebar. Now there is a new version of this popular drink with a bit of a twist – Café con Leche Ice Cream from Blue Bell Creameries.

This year, in honor of National Ice Cream Month (the month of July), Blue Bell Creameries is introducing in South Florida only, a brand new flavor called Café con Leche Ice Cream, which is a smooth coffee ice cream with a rich, sweet flavor inspired by the popular beverage.

Café con Leche is the second flavor developed this year in honor of the company’s market entry into South Florida, and is exclusive to the area.  The first was Tropical Paradise, a coconut ice cream blended with crushed pineapples, roasted macadamia nuts and a pineapple coconut sauce swirl.

“South Florida offers a variety of distinctive cuisines that have inspired Blue Bell to come up with some new ideas for ice cream flavors just for this region,” explains Melvin Ziegenbein, vice president of sales and marketing for Blue Bell.  “We’re hoping the flavor is received as well as the drink it was inspired by, and we may make it available in other markets in the fall.  But South Floridians get to have it all to themselves first.  You won’t even find any in stores in Texas, where Blue Bell is made.”

Every year in July, Blue Bell celebrates National Ice Cream Month, established by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, by introducing a brand new ice cream flavor never before made by the company.  Blue Bell Ice Cream, made in the small town of Brenham, Texas, is the number-three selling ice cream in the U.S., even though it is only sold in parts of 18 states.  Blue Bell ice cream, light ice cream, sherbet, frozen yogurt, no-sugar added ice cream, and frozen snacks are part of a 250-product lineup.  Blue Bell produces about 45 different flavors of ice cream each year, but the most popular flavor, year after year, is Homemade Vanilla, made according to a secret recipe to taste like hand-cranked ice cream.

With this ice cream I thee wed

June 28th, 2009

BRENHAM, Texas – Every wedding should be celebrated with a toss of the bouquet, a toast to the happy couple and a bowl of Blue Bell Ice Cream…Blue Bell Groom’s Cake Ice Cream to be exact.  The newest creation from “the little creamery” is sure to become a wedding tradition.

Groom’s Cake Ice Cream is a luscious chocolate ice cream with chocolate cake pieces and chocolate coated strawberry hearts, surrounded by swirls of strawberry sauce and chocolate icing.

“The inspiration for this flavor came from an actual groom’s cake I tasted at a family friend’s wedding,” said Brenda Valera, director of research and development at Blue Bell “It was so delicious, a chocolate cake with chocolate icing, a strawberry filling and chocolate coated strawberries on top. The flavors were perfect for an ice cream. ”

The tradition of a groom’s cake originated in the South, just like Texas-based Blue Bell Ice Cream. Many Southern weddings feature a cake for the bride, which is usually the larger, more grand creation with a groom’s cake displayed nearby.

“Our ice cream might just change the whole groom’s cake concept,” Valera added. “We have already had employees request it be served at their weddings in place of an actual cake. It’s a great-tasting flavor that you can enjoy at a wedding or at home for no special reason at all.”

Blue Bell Creameries, known as “the Little Creamery in Brenham,” was founded in 1907 in Brenham, Texas, a town of 13,000, located 70 miles northwest of Houston in the rolling hills of Central Texas. The company launched its brand in South Florida in February to incredible reviews. Now available in 18 states, it is the third-largest selling ice cream brand in the U.S. For information, visit www.bluebell.com.
