BAE Systems Golf Event Raises £2,000

August 3rd, 2009

Golfers helped raise nearly £2,000 for charity during BAE Systems Submarine Solutions’ charity golf event.

Organised as part of the company’s Five Day Global Charity Challenge, it saw 60 employees and members of its supply chain play Ulverston Golf Club.

Perfect conditions contributed to a day of quality golf with Craig MacGranthin crowned the eventual winner. Craig also won the nearest to the pin competition.

Stuart Moscrop, from local company PKA, was the competition’s runner-up, and he also came second in the nearest to the pin. Colin Mahon hit the longest drive.

The day ended with a presentation in the clubhouse with prizes handed out by St Mary’s Hospice fundraising manager Zoe Guest.

In total £1,960.40 was raised, with £500 going to Sue Ryder Care, and the remainder to St Mary’s Hospice.

Every 18 months BAE Systems nominates a partner charity for its Charity Challenge, when over that time it commits to raising funds for a particular organisation. Its current partner is St Mary’s Hospice and already the company is well on the way to raising another substantial amount.

Recently it has:
• Donated £17,500 to 25 separate local charities via its Give As You Earn scheme in which employees give a percentage of their monthly earnings.
• Supported more than 200 charities in various projects and initiatives.
• Backed national campaigns, such as Wear it Pink Day and Red Nose Day, raising thousands of pounds in the process.
•  The annual Keswick to Barrow Walk is organised with the help of BAE Systems employees and in 2008 raised more than £200,000 for charity.
•  Organised other events including quiz nights, golf competitions, bingo evenings, bag-packing and much more. The Charity Challenge team is continually looking for new fundraising ideas.

Uganda charity gets helping hand through Facebook, Coinjars app

August 28th, 2008

In a unique joint venture between Soft Power Education – a British-registered, non profit empowering primary school education in Uganda- social networking website Facebook and innovative Facebook application Coinjars, a new way to fundraise is now live. Combining cutting edge eMoney technologies with the power of social networking, Soft Power Education is actively seeking donations from all over the world to help them in their effort to make a difference in Uganda.

(Gibraltar; August 27, 2008) – Long after the political instability and dictatorship of former Ugandan President Idi Amin, the country has remained in the ranks of least developed nations. Despite its wealth in terms of beauty and vast natural resources, it has ironically remained poor, with its people languishing in extreme forms of poverty with little access to education.

Soft Power Education has been working to help provide a better future to children in Jinja, Uganda through education.

“Our aim is to develop and improve educational facilities for children, mainly those in the primary level,” Ms. Hannah Small said, trustee and founder of Soft Power Education.

Based in Jinja, Uganda, Soft Power Education is a British-registered, non religious charitable organization and Ugandan NGO that has been helping children and local communities in the area through its Primary School Refurbishment Programme.

“We initially built two preschools for AIDS orphans and for the last five years, we have been involved in the refurbishment of over 30 government primary schools in the Budondo, Mafubira, Butagaya sub-counties of Jinja as well as several schools around the Murchison Falls Conservation Area.,” Ms. Small proudly stated.

From the School Refurbishment Programme, other projects have grown – The inspiring Amagezi Education Centre where children come to experience hands on, inclusive learning in Art, Drama, ICT, Agriculture and Drama. The centre also doubles as a community centre offering hands on skills based courses for members of the surrounding community. The Murchison Project based in the Murchison Falls Conservation Area aims to involve the surrounding communities in the conservation efforts in a bid to enable them to benefit from the growing tourism in the area.

“As Daisaku Ikeda of Harvard University said, the moving force of history has shifted from “hard power,” or military and political might, to that of “soft power,” or knowledge and information, culture, ideas, and systems. That is where we got our name,” Ms. Small shared.

People working for Soft Power Education say they are fortunate enough to find themselves in the position of being able to affect a phenomenal improvement in the lives and education of children in Jinja. But they need support.

“As they say, there is strength in numbers. We cannot do this alone. We need the help of others,” one of Soft Power Education’s volunteer said.

To continue with its mission of making a difference in the lives of Ugandan children and their families, Soft Power Education is actively seeking donations and volunteers in the United Kingdom, Europe and the rest of the world.

“Soft Power Education is 100% charity, so everything you donate will go into our projects, enabling all of us to make a difference to lives of Uganda’s children,” Ms. Small explained.

Thankfully, doing charity in the modern world need not be confined in the conventional limits of time and space. Right in the comfort of one’s home, with a simple click of the mouse or tap on the keyboard, those interested in helping Uganda’s children through Soft Power Education can easily send in their donations.

“If you are also into Facebook, like most people are, you just have to add the Coinjars application and you are ready to help make a difference in Uganda,” Ms. Small enthused.

Coinjars is a wallet application built on the iCoins platform that includes a fully secured and licensed eMoney issuer. iCoins is a digital cash mechanism designed to allow cash transactions between disparate and unrelated wallet systems in the digital era. iCoins are what bank notes are in the real world.

Coinjars enables the sending and receiving of donations right within Facebook. Donors can fund their Coinjars accounts via credit card, bank transfer or Paypal. Fundraisers and donation recipients, on the other hand, can withdraw via the same mechanisms. The best thing about the transactions is that while they are digital they remain free. Recipients will receive the money as is and without any deductions.

HaroldSays is promoting ‘The Be Positive Do Something Positive Day’ on March 1, 2008

November 10th, 2007

Harold Cameron, the Chief of Helping People and Consumer Advocate for HaroldSays is promoting The Be Positive Do Something Positive Day on March 1, 2008. The Be Positive Do Something Positive Day is a day for people all over the world to experience and celebrate by BEING positive and then by DOING something positive on that day for another person, organization, or charitable cause. The end result, if only for one day, is to make our world a more positive and better place to be and to live in.

To properly celebrate the day each of us must first start with ourselves by BEING positive and then DOING something positive for ourselves – ideally when we begin our day.

Next, for The Be Positive Day to truly be a success, we must then BE positive and DO something positive in our homes for our families. Our positive act does not need to be huge or monumental, but rather, can be something seemingly small such as cooking dinner for our family and then eating and enjoying it together as a family.

Finally, for The Be Positive Do Something Positive Day to be a “positively” world changing success worldwide, we all need to BE positive and then DO something positive for another person, organization, or charitable cause. If we are a student, we could do something positive for a fellow student. If we are an employee of a company or organization, we might do something positive for one of our co-workers. We could also do something positive for an organization such as The American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Stand Up For Kids, Charity Buzz, Nickelby Project, Do Something, or some other organization or cause we believe in and want to help.

Let’s all join together on March 1, 2008 and make it the most positive day our world has ever celebrated or experienced.

HaroldSays, “Making our world a more positive place, one day at a time!”
