Clutter Concern Increases Sale Of Garden Sheds

June 7th, 2010

The sale of metal sheds and wooden sheds has seen a steady increase here in the United States as more and more homeowners become concerned with the growing clutter at home. Unlike in the UK where most homes have some sort of wooden or metal sheds, here in the US sheds are a relatively new concept. On the other hand, surveys have shown that there is a steady increase in the interest and awareness of the practicality of garden sheds in the home.

Statistics have shown that American in particular spend 9 million hours each year looking for things! This is due to the overwhelming amount of possessions that they have at home. Recent studies also show that 80% of what we own and keep in our homes, we never use.

According to Peter Walsh, the NY Times bestselling author of It’s All Too Much, “Over time, it creeps into the corners and cabinets, stairways and entryways, closets and cupboards of your home – clutter! Suddenly you’re overrun with piles of unrelated stuff, some useful and some far from it. Junk-proof your life and keep only what you use and love.”

This illustrates how space has become quite an issue in the average American home and could well explain the increase in sales of garden sheds such as the metal garden sheds and wooden garden sheds. A shed can instantly provide an extra room or storage space for the home. It is available in many sizes thus making it a very attractive option and alternative for having storage space right there in the backyard. It saves money and time compared to renting a storage area or warehouse away from home.

The garden sheds can also provide relief for the overstuffed garage. An outstanding 50% of homeowners stated that the garage is the most disorganized place in the home, as it is used by the entire family. Also, a report from the US department of energy has found that 25% of homeowners with two-car garages cannot park their cars in there, and about 32% parked only one car. The garage has seriously lost its main objective.

It is easy to see how a garden shed can help to alleviate this growing problem. However, there is no point in having a garden shed as an alternative store room if it is just another place to hide your clutter. This is because 80% of the clutter in most American homes is the result of disorganization, and not simply the lack of space. Getting organized is the key to the problem.

When you have your own garden shed and want to move things into it, consider the following. First, take a look at all your items in your garage or home. Get rid of items that no longer work. Give away or donate those which you no longer need but can still be used. Sort and purge the rest of the items and decide the best way to store them. Think about racks, shelves, stackable drawers, pegboards and hooks for your shed and you will be able to store your items in a more organized and controlled way.

Clutter can easily get out of hand if left uncontrolled. The key to keeping a more organized home is to always spend time at the end of each day cleaning up and maintaining the order of things at home. A more organized home will be a haven for all family members.
