Will Google Music Overtake iTunes?

October 26th, 2011

Google is getting into the music business. Online music storage, that is. According to a New York Times article, industry insiders say a Google online music storage site will launch in the next couple of weeks, putting the search engine giant in position to compete with Apple.

Earlier this year, Google launched Google Music Beta, allowing users to store music in one secure place via the Cloud. Google Music advertised itself as an online storage locker, according to the Washington Post, but music executives hint that Google’s new online storage service will rival Apple’s popular iTunes service, with users able to buy, download, and store mp3s, all from servers with no cables or CDs required. Speculators say the service would be directly linked to Google Music Beta, providing a one-stop shop for users to manage and store music, similar to iTunes.

The race appears to be connected to the growing popularity of storing things in the Cloud, where a user’s files and resources are all virtual. Thanks to the current preponderance of smart phones, users are becoming increasingly more interested in syncing phones, mp3 players, and computers without using cables. With Apple’s move to the Cloud, competitors are seeking a way to provide users the ability to store all data on remote servers, accessing it as needed, from multiple locations, without having to constantly update each device.

The biggest concern for these new services is piracy. One music industry executive told the New York Times, “We want to make sure the locker doesn’t become a bastion of piracy.” With Google Music allowing users to store up to 20,000 mp3 files in each locker, executives are watching closely to see if users will find a way to share mp3 files with others, causing the same piracy problems services like Napster created in the 90s.

Apple plans a similar music-storage program, called iTunes Match, which is coming out at the end of October. iTunes Match will charge $24.99 a year to users who will be allowed to store music in Apple’s Cloud. iTunes accomplishes this by storing music known to have been purchased by users in the Cloud, for access via any device or computer at any time.

Google and Apple aren’t the only ones. Amazon’s mp3 downloads have been popular with users for a while, thanks to gimmicks like $.79 popular mp3s and artists offering limited-time free album downloads. And Facebook partnered with the digital music service Spotify recently, with plans to allow users to listen to music with friends.

Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook are all fighting to become one-stop shopping for users on a variety of services. With the Cloud opening up the possibilities, Google is only one of many sites that will try to become “hangout spots” for users. But will users stick with one site for all their needs? Will there be an increased popularity of music production schools? Will users continue to use one site for music, another for social networking, and yet another to share pictures and send e-mails?

Kingpin Excited to See What Google+ does for Google Realtime

August 23rd, 2011

According to recent research, Google+ has apparently amassed 25 million users since its launch in late June, however, the networking site is currently still in the invite only stages. Despite the lack of news regarding its public launch date, there are now rumours that Google will be using the social networking site in conjunction with the not long abandoned Google Realtime function.

Realtime delivered relevant information from Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms in order to show you what the world was talking about. The tool was particular useful when major world events were occurring, but due to a failure to come to an agreement with Twitter about the access to their data, the function was removed in July.

Now, according to Google Fellow Amit Singhal, the Google search is “actively working” on bringing the product back, reported Mashable. But this time, Google+ would be their main source of data.

There’s already been speculation that Google+ will have an impact on SEO work, as users clicking on the “+1″ function could affect businesses’ search engine optimisation efforts. Kingpin are intrigued as to how Google are evolving the way users search for information, and how that will change the way their SEO work works in the future.

The search panel that Amit Singhal was speaking at in Mountain View, California, also saw Danny Sullivan ask a question that many Google+ users were asking. The panel’s moderator and Search Engine Land editor in chief asked why the Google+ stream doesn’t have its own search engine. Singhal replied with “we are on it”, so we can look forward to seeing that in the near future by the sounds of it.

It remains to be seen how Google will cope without Twitter on their side. A survey of the rise in Tweets after the death of Bin Laden was done and according to the results, within 12 hours, there were 2.2 million Tweets about Osama Bin Laden. “I imagine if the same survey was done for Facebook or Google+ at the time of a major world event, the results could have been quite different”, says the SEO agency.

Information Security Experts Reveal Vulnerabilities

December 9th, 2010

Software developers are constantly faced with the challenge of addressing vulnerabilities discovered in their products. In a security update, Google reported critical vulnerability discovered by Information Security Professionals. The patch mitigates one of 5 major vulnerabilities found. Usually, major software companies rely on ethical hacking to identify vulnerabilities in code or the systems they are hosted on.

Like other companies, Google had also locked down its bug tracking database to hide the details of the vulnerabilities, but ethical hacking was used by information security professionals to expose the bugs. Google granted thousand dollars prize to the information security professionals for uncovering the vulnerabilities in Chrome.

EC-Council provides industry training and certification for information security professionals in ethical hacking among many other specializations.

“Understanding how hackers exploit these vulnerabilities is a key requirement to hardening software and hardware. That is why EC-Council focuses on ethical hacking as an approach to information security evaluation” as stated by EC-Council’s Senior Director, Steven Graham. EC-Council through its Certified Ethical Hacker program has trained such information security professionals from all over the world.

Google’s New Trademark Policy: How Beneficial is it?

July 30th, 2009

As most of you might already know, effective June 15th of this year, Google is starting to allow the use of trademark terms in the ad text. Every time an advertiser submits his ads that contain a trademark term, the ads will be “under review” before it can start showing. The review process basically exams whether the advertisers meet the criteria to use trademark terms in their ad texts.

Oh, and did I mention that the review process can take up to a week or more? It is a very long time in a constantly changing market.

One might assume that once the ad passes the review for the first time, it will be stamped as safe by Google the next time you update your ad text, but it’s NOT. As long as you have a trademark term in your ad text, your ads will need to go through the same (long) review process even though all you had changed was punctuation.

This is really annoying for advertisers who are selling products that constantly go through price changes. Imagine waiting for a week for the new price to show up in your ads only to find out there is another price change just around the corner.

They would be better off and have fewer headaches if they just stick to not using trademark terms at all.

Adwords Integration with Google Web Site Optimizer

July 29th, 2009

We, as search marketers, should spend most of the time creating, measuring and adapting the best performing keywords and ads, for our customers. In fact, one of the most time consuming activities in a PPC management company is the daunting task of ad testing. Nowadays, bid management can be automated, keywords research is not as hard as it used to be and reports customization it’s a trend.

However until now, no “big” players on PPC management software came on the market with an ad testing management tool.

We invest and spend lots of time in testing ads, simply because it’s a major part of our PPC optimization process. And testing ads takes time; create, test, analyze and again.

Of course, if you manage a small account (5-10 ad groups, with 10-20 ads) managing the tests won’t be a problem for you (choosing the winner, it will be an issue, if you have more than one ad in your ad adgroups).

What if you have hundreds or thousands of highly targeted ads, split across various ad groups? How do you manage the test? Normally, you would create at least two ads per adgroup, and after one/two/three/whatever weeks you look at the performance and, “hmm, this ad has a conversion rate of 5% compared to the other one which has a 10% CR. We’ll keep the 10% ad running and create a follow up test”. Usually, this is how it goes.

But, did your decision considered the percentage of ad serve, the number of clicks and conversions, all from a statistical point of view? Most of us don’t look at the whole, because that information is not there. You’ll have to use Excel to analyze ads’ performance further. And we humans, are lazy by nature. If it’s not in the front of us, we probably won’t bother doing some additional spreadsheet work.

And here it is where Google Website Optimizer can help.Wouldn’t be wonderful if Adwords will have a similar interface.Unfortunately, that’s just me innovating and creating imaginary screenshots. The above is not an actual screenshot from the Adwords interface. But imagine if you could create the ads and Google (as it does with Google Website Optimizer) will tell you which ads are going to perform better (from a statistical point of view) either for ROI or CR or whatever metric you chose. Further, imagine you don’t need to browse the slow interface or download reports to know when a test reached its end; you will receive an email from them. And then, with a click you can create a follow up test and test again.

Google Analytics – Keyword Positions

May 1st, 2009

One of the biggest questions advertisers have when manage their pay per click account is how much they should bid for their keywords. Bidding too high may incur too much cost and advertisers might not be able to sustain a profitable ROI, whether bidding too low might not allow their ads to be positioned at a visible spot.

There is a function in Google Analytics that allows advertisers to see at which positions their keywords receive the most visits, transactions, revenue, conversion rate, and etc.

Simply login into Google Analytics, select a report which has the proper filters applied. Then click on Traffic Sources. Within the expended pull down menu, select Adwords then click on Keyword Positions.

Now just type in the keyword that you want to analyze into the “Find keywords” box to see the stats on that keyword. Click on the keyword once, then you can start seeing the position break down on the right.

This handy little tool might not be practical for huge companies that have tens and thousands of keywords, since manually analyzing each single one of them would just be overly time consuming. But for small businesses that have a few core keywords which make up the majority of their conversions, this is a great way to get some general ideas on how much they should bid to maximize their investments.

One thing to be careful though, is not to solely rely on the number of transactions to make decisions; instead you should also take the conversion rate, and number of visits into account.

For example: let’s assume for the time period you are analyzing, your keyword have spent 90% of the time at position one and only 10% of the time at position three, so most likely there would be more transactions happening at position one than at position three.

But at the same time, the keyword might only be getting a 0.3% conversion rate at position one whereas at position three, it might be getting a 3.2% conversion rate. Assuming there isn’t a big different on the number of visits between the two positions, it actually makes more sense to lower your bid and have the keyword on position three for most of the time.

As with any other analysis process, make sure you have a sufficient data collection before making any judgments.
