Last weekend in October worst for ‘winter blues’

November 17th, 2010

A leading online independent travel agency has revealed that this weekend is the ‘winter blues weekend’ based on the time of year when most people in the UK book a holiday for the following year. Research of more than 1,400 people was also carried out to discover more about how people feel about their holidays.

The UK’s fastest growing online independent travel agent has released site statistics that show the last weekend in October was the time of the year in 2008 and 2009 when they received the most bookings for holidays the following year. As such, the site has branded this weekend the ‘winter blues weekend’, as it is when they expect most to plan their escape from the UK and the gloomy weather once again.

www.sunshine.co.uk has looked into past booking and search statistics on the site to determine when the most people visit the site to book a holiday for the following year. 1,489 British holidaymakers were also polled, to find out more about their holiday habits.

62% claimed booking a holiday ‘made them feel better’ and 11% said they hated ‘going a year without a trip around’. A third, 34%, admitted to looking up holidays whilst they were at work.

78% of the respondents claimed to book holidays in the winter months. When asked by http://www.sunshine.co.uk why they did so, 59% claimed it gave them ‘something to look forward to’.

Respondents were also asked ‘does the weather in the UK made you feel low?’ and a high number, 67%, said that it did. One in ten, 9%, even went as far as saying the weather in the UK made them ‘want to live abroad one day’.

When asked, ‘Do you return from a holiday feeling refreshed?’ 97% of people said that they did, but the study also found that the average time it takes people to feel as though they need another holiday is after just four weeks of being home.

Respondents were also asked to determine, out of Birthdays, Christmas and holidays, what they most looked forward to in a year. 82% of people picked ‘holidays’.

Chris Brown, co-founder of http://www.sunshine.co.uk, commented on the findings;

“We thought it would be fun to look in more detail at the day when most visitors to our site are thinking about and booking their holiday for the following year. The last weekend of October is on track to be a popular time for bookings yet again and, I can only assume the recent plunge in temperatures has a lot to do with that.

“October is a time when the heat, if any, of summer has disappeared and Christmas is just a little too far away to be excited about, so people get left with nothing much to enjoy or look forward to. Booking a holiday certainly seems a remedy for most!”

Men three times more likely to get hurt on holiday

June 5th, 2010

Men are three times more likely to injure themselves on holiday than women, a poll by the UK’s fastest growing online independent travel agent has found, whilst the most likely way to get hurt on holiday is slipping by the poolside.

The latest research by online travel agent www.sunshine.co.uk of 1,956 holidaymakers has found that men are three times more likely to get hurt on holiday than women. The study also revealed the top five most likely ways to get hurt whilst on holiday.
11% of women that responded to the poll claimed to have suffered an injury whilst on holiday, compared to more than a third, 34%, of men. Of the 45% of total respondents who said they had hurt themselves whilst on holiday, 18% did so by slipping by the side of the pool.
Even though just under half had experienced an accident on holiday, 19% admitted to having previously gone on holiday without taking out a travel insurance policy. Of these, 32% did so to ‘save money’ and 41% claimed they thought it was ‘unnecessary’. 8% of these admitted to having forgotten.
Aside from being injured whilst on holiday, just more than a third, 34%, said they had fallen ill whilst on a trip abroad. The most common illness amongst the holidaymakers asked who had been unwell on a vacation was food poisoning, with 24% claiming to have suffered from it.
The top five most common ways of being injured on holiday, according to the poll by sunshine.co.uk are:

1. Slipping by the poolside – 18%
2. Drunken fall – 15%
3. Road accidents – 11%
4. Water sport injuries – 9%
5. Skiing injuries – 4%
The top five most common illnesses experienced on holiday by the respondents are:

1. Food poisoning – 24%
2. Sunstroke – 13%
3. Traveller’s diarrhoea – 12%
4. Jet lag – 9%
5. Altitude sickness – 7%
Chris Brown, co-founder of http://www.sunshine.co.uk, commented on the findings;
“Unfortunately, illness and injury on holiday can be all too common. The most obvious way to ensure you are protected from the problems found within our poll is to ensure that you take out an adequate travel insurance policy before jetting off abroad. We weren’t expecting to see such a high number of respondents admit to going on holiday without insurance in the past and hope this is something people will reconsider after seeing our research results.”
He continued, “We have produced a quick guide to staying protected whilst on holiday, as a trip can be easily ruined if the right precautions aren’t taken. We’d like to think all travellers would be as determined as we are to ensure they have a good holiday and as so many of these illnesses and injuries can be easily avoided, all it takes is a bit of common sense.”
Sunshine.co.uk have produced the following guide for travellers, to help protect holidaymakers from avoidable injury and illness.

Hydrate – always drink plenty of bottled water to prevent dehydration. If you take ice in your drinks, ensure that they ice cubes are made from mineral water, as tap water abroad should be avoided.
Only eat freshly prepared and thoroughly cooked food – Keep food poisoning at bay by avoiding salads that could have been washed in contaminated water. Try to stay away from fish and shellfish and steer clear of food that has been kept warm for long periods of time.
Leave with the essentials – Take any medication you think you might need on holiday, such as travel sickness pills, paracetamol and Imodium.
Insurance – Don’t leave home without it. Make sure you have the right travel insurance policy and a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which entitles you to free or discounted medical treatment in EEA countries and Switzerland.
Don’t hire a car unless you’re confident – Road accidents abroad account for a high number of insurance claims, so be 100% confident that you can drive on foreign roads before hiring a vehicle.
Apply plenty of sun cream – Sunburn can ruin a holiday, so make sure you pack a high factor cream and apply it regularly, especially after you’ve been in the pool or sea. Take further precautions by drinking water and wearing sunglasses and a hat.
You can’t be too careful – Use your common sense, don’t run by the poolside and don’t drink excessive amounts of alcohol.

Third of Brits run out if spending money on holiday

April 21st, 2010

Nationwide research by the UK’s fastest growing online independent travel agent for holidays solely to Tenerife has found that almost a third of holidaymakers have ran out of spending money during their vacation.

A new study by www.tenerife.co.uk of 1,312 holidaymakers has discovered that running out of money on holiday is a common occurrence, with 31% of the respondents admitting to finding themselves out of pocket whilst on their last trip abroad.

Of the holidaymakers www.tenerife.co.uk spoke to, 51% went on a self-catering holiday and 34% said they opted for all inclusive, meaning they had meals and drinks provided. Of those who chose the self-catering option, only 9% said they regularly cooked meals in their accommodation, whilst 64% claimed to eat out every day.

The study found that the average amount of spending money taken on a 2 week holiday by self-catering holidaymakers was £500, whilst all inclusive holiday makers took a lot less, with the average figure standing at £300.

Just under a quarter of the people asked, 23%, admitted to dipping into their funds back home by finding an ATM on their holiday to access their money, despite the charges that come with withdrawing money abroad.

Of those who admitted to previously running out of money on holiday, 64% were male and 36% were female, suggesting women are much more likely to be spending savvy on holiday.

49% of the respondents admitted to spending money on themselves whilst on holiday that was meant to be used on gifts for friends and family back home. Of those who said they had ran out of money, 12% said it was due to being delayed on the journey home, meaning they had to stay abroad for longer than planned.

Chris Brown, co-founder of tenerife.co.uk, commented on the findings of the study;

“Spending money makes up a large proportion of the total cost of a holiday and I think it’s easy to underestimate how much extra cash to put aside once flights and accommodation have been paid for. People should always put by a little extra for their holiday, as delays are a common occurrence and many people end up staying abroad for longer than planned, which is particularly true of the recent crisis caused by the volcanic ash.

“All inclusive holidays are a much better option for people who require a safety net in case of overspending, as you are guaranteed meals and drinks even if the funds are running low! ATMs abroad can be dangerous on holiday, in the sense that it’s easy to lose track of how much you are spending, so we encourage all holidaymakers to work out a clear daily budget before they jet off.”

Panic Sets In For Men Holidaying During The World Cup

April 15th, 2010

After receiving an increasing amount of enquiries from male holidaymakers about whether the hotel they will be visiting will be showing the World Cup this summer, the UK’s fastest growing online independent travel agent has commissioned research to find out more about the rising panic.

New research commissioned by one of the UK’s leading online independent travel agents of 2,634 men aged 18-30 has looked into attitudes towards holidaying during the World Cup.

Www.sunshine.co.uk wanted to run the poll after noticing an increasing amount of enquiries in the run up to the World Cup as to whether or not the resort they would be staying in would be showing the matches. Of the men polled, 27% already have a holiday abroad booked for this year and 31% are planning to book one.

Of those who are or are potentially going away this year, 62% said they wanted to watch the World Cup and more than 1 in 3, 36%, of those abroad at the time of the competition said they would be checking whether their hotel, resort or somewhere in the surrounding area would be showing the games. Nearly half, 49%, said they felt anxious at the thought of missing a match that they wanted to see.

14% said they were using the World Cup as an excuse to go abroad, admitting the warm weather made for nicer surroundings to enjoy the game in. Only 8% said they would rather have stayed home during the World Cup, whilst 22% admitted it was their partner that had persuaded them to go away.

The study by http://www.sunshine.co.uk also found that 12% had contacted their hotel to check what other nationalities were going to be staying there during the World Cup and nearly a quarter, 23%, said they would rather check in to a hotel with more English guests, to avoid a clash over the match results.

54% said they would prioritise watching a World Cup match over any other activities on holiday.

Chris Brown, co-founder of http://www.sunshine.co.uk, commented on the findings;

“After already looking into women’s opinions of the World Cup and finding how a large number planned to go on holiday to avoid the game, we wanted to hear more from men about their thoughts on the subject.

“Judging by the research results and the number of panicked enquiries we have had at sunshine.co.uk, it’s clear that many men are worried about missing out if the go abroad whilst the World Cup is on. Luckily, it’s given away in the name that the World Cup is a widely appreciated game, so I don’t think there’s any danger of people not being able to find somewhere to watch the match on holiday.”

Holidaymakers Warned About Change in Turkish Driving Law

March 1st, 2010

Holidaymakers heading for Turkey this summer are being advised by one of the UK’s leading car hire brokers that a change in Turkish law means they may face fines and invalid insurance if they drive some of the larger vehicle available for hire.

Economy Car Hire is warning that from May, UK drivers will not be able to drive a nine-seater minibus on a standard license – a popular choice for larger parties and families traveling together.

Economy Car Hire has now removed nine-seater vehicles from sale from this date, but is warning holidaymakers that not all car hire companies are aware of the law change. The company is contacting all customers who have booked such vehicles to offer them alternatives.

“With the strength of the Euro, Turkey is a popular choice for holidaymakers this year,” said Economy Car Hire managing director Rory Sexton. “This change in the law has been introduced quickly and quietly, so it’s important that holidaymakers know about it.

“From 1st May, British people driving a nine-seater vehicle on a standard UK license will be driving illegally, which will also invalidate their insurance, leaving them facing huge costs in the event of an accident.”

About Economy Car Hire:

Economy Car Hire operates fully-inclusive car hire services in over 20 countries worldwide, including the UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece (mainland and islands), Cyprus, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Turkey, Jamaica, Australia and Sri Lanka.
Prices are all-inclusive, with no insurance excess (hence no collision damage waiver necessary), unlimited mileage, free additional driver, no airport surcharges, and included theft loss waiver.

Sunshine compares travel trade Jan 09 – Jan 10

February 4th, 2010

The UK’s fastest growing online independent travel agent has released trading figures that show an 89% increase in sales in January 2010 when compared to January 2009 and has revealed which destinations have seen most bookings this year so far.

www.sunshine.co.uk has seen sales almost double from January 2009 to January 2010, with a sales increase of 89%, suggesting that things are looking bright for the travel and tourism industry this year. The number of bookings has risen by half and the number of passengers sent abroad has increased by 46% when compared to the same time in January last year.

These latest statistics from sunshine.co.uk follow a successful trading year in 2009, despite the recession, and highlight the fact that the travel industry is already picking up following the economic downturn. Other figures that further demonstrate this point are the most and least popular holiday destinations based on percentage share of bookings at sunshine.co.uk.

The site found that whilst Spain is still the most popular destination in terms of percentage share of bookings, the holiday location has seen only a marginal growth in terms of bookings since last year. Even though the USA only accounts for a small number of bookings on sunshine.co.uk in terms of share percentage, the actual number of bookings to the States has doubled when compared to January 2009.

In order, the destinations that have seen the biggest increase in bookings when compared to January 2009, along with the percentage increases figures are;

  1. Egypt – 111.6%
  2. Greece – 108.5%
  3. USA – 102.4%
  4. Turkey – 100.7%
  5. Portugal – 88.5%
  6. Malta – 80.9%
  7. Canaries – 72.4%
  8. Tunisia – 5.9%
  9. Spain – 3.7%

Chris Brown, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk, commented on these trading figures;

“We are extremely lucky to have had such a successful year and see the increases in sales, passengers and bookings that we have. Whilst these statistics reflect the success of sunshine.co.uk, they also go a long way to proving that the travel industry as a whole is picking up.

He continued, “It’s interesting to see that whilst Spain still has the biggest percentage of market share when it comes to bookings on our site, it is actually destinations like the USA and Egypt that have seen the biggest percentage increase in bookings. The fact that bookings to Egypt and Greece have more than doubled in the past year, but the number of people opting to go to Spain has only grown marginally proves that the trends of the trade are changing.”

Girly gateways on the rise in a bid to avoid world cup

January 13th, 2010

The UK’s fastest growing online independent travel agent has revealed that ladies-only holidays are on the rise in the wake of this year’s world cup and has suggested the best places to go to avoid the football frenzy, made up of destinations that didn’t qualify.

While the sports fanatics are glued to the screens or flying to Cape Town this summer, girl’s only breaks are on the increase. www.sunshine.co.uk has recommended the top holiday destinations for those wishing to avoid this summer’s World Cup, in countries that didn’t get through to the competition.

Sunshine.co.uk was interested to find out what women’s views about holidaying during the world cup were, so asked 1,074 females aged 18-30 what their plans were for this summer. 41% were planning a girl’s holiday for this summer and a further 1 in 4 said they were going to be on holiday with their partner during the World Cup.

Of those embarking on a girly getaway, almost half said it was to leave their partner behind to enjoy the football in peace. Of those going with their partner, 63% think they will end up being taken to a bar to watch some matches. The top ten destinations to enjoy a holiday and avoid the world cup are;

1.    Dubrovnik, Croatia – Considered Europe’s most beautiful city and once called the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ by Lord Byron. Dubrovnik is a city full of quaint cafes, shops and medieval architecture. Wooded capes and a vast landscape of beaches lie beyond the city walls.

2.    Istanbul, Turkey – With its newly acquired status as Capital of Culture, 2010 has brought in a glut of exciting new art galleries and museums. After dark the city comes alive with a vibrant nightlife. Unwind in one of its many tea rooms, which are an institution in themselves.

3.    Valletta, Malta – Swathed in baroque charm, this tiny island is diverse from its post-colonialist, Arabic and Sicilian influences. In an area just doubling the size of Lichtenstein it has enough peaceful towns and beautiful beaches to help everyone forget about the football.

4.    Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt – Principally a bustling resort full of top class hotels and shopping centres. The more adventurous will enjoy an evening camel ride through the desert with its breathtaking views. The lure of the turquoise sea will be hard to resist as diving and snorkelling in Na’ama bay is world class.

5.    Havana, Cuba – 500 years of turbulent history has made Cuba one of the world’s most culturally unique societies. The renowned icons of classic American cars, cigars and Che Guevara make the country alluded by communism instantly recognisable.

6.    Goa, India -. As well as having gorgeous white sand beaches, and huge spice plantations to visit; Goa still resides in the past grandeur of colonialism. It’s remarkable blend of Hinduism, Catholicism, Islam and Portuguese influences are sure to leave a longer-lasting impression than this year’s world cup winner.

7.    Phuket, Thailand – Thailand is not just a haven for backpackers anymore; from unwinding on white sandy beaches to exploring the dramatic mix of old and new in Phuket town, there is something here to tempt even the most ardent football fan away.

8.     Paphos, Cyprus – Paphos prides itself in its nightlife alongside its clubbing counter-part Aiya Napa, and is a top holiday destination for groups and younger travellers. For those who prefer a more laid-back break, Coral Bay and Polis are more peaceful and authentic.

9.     Sousse, Tunisia – One of North Africa’s easiest and most popular tourist spots; the port city of Sousse is rich in history and Arabic culture. The lively town includes a huge medina perfect for haggling for bargains, and some of the most attractive beaches in the country.

10. Bahia Maimon, Dominican Republic – In this northern resort on the Caribbean’s largest island, serenity reigns supreme. By relaxing on one of the areas many stunning beaches in the tropical sunshine, you may forget that there was ever such a thing as football in the first place.

Chris Brown, co-founder of sunshine.co.uk said;

“Not everyone enjoys the football, and during the World Cup some women must feel alienated. It’s not surprising that this has brought about a rise in women taking holidays alone or with their friends. By taking your summer break in a country that didn’t qualify for the world cup, there is less chance in getting caught up in the football fever, and more of a chance to relax and enjoy your holiday.”
