How Translation and Localization Professionals Beat the Recession

October 24th, 2010

New study from Common Sense Advisory shows steady pay increases, overall employment stability, and high levels of job satisfaction for workers in the language services industry.

Boston, MA – October 21, 2010 — Global business depends heavily on the translation and localization services industry, which market research firm Common Sense Advisory estimates will generate US$26 billion in 2010. And, as globalization increases, more content is created in more languages than ever before. These two factors help to explain the findings of “Language Services Industry Compensation,” the latest report from Common Sense Advisory.

The new research, based on a survey of 1,037 people in 64 countries, reveals that individuals employed in the language services industry continued to see pay raises and increased demand for their services throughout the economic downturn.

“On average, translation and localization workers expected to receive annual compensation of US$63,130 in 2010, compared to US$60,673 in 2009,” observed report lead analyst and Chief Research Officer Nataly Kelly. “The language services market grew steadily throughout the recession, and salaries continued to increase throughout this period as well.”

Key research findings include:
* Compensation in emerging markets is rising at a faster pace. Translation professionals in China saw their income grow by 46.09%, while those workers living in Russia, Brazil, Israel, and Romania also saw increase in excess of 25%.
* Job title and location determine pay grade. In North America, the most highly paid individuals worked in executive management, sales, and content creation. In Asia, those working in compliance, customer support, and human resources reported earning the most. In Europe, the workers with the highest compensation were found in executive management, sales, and account management.
* Large companies have been giving better raises. Professionals experiencing the largest increases in pay were those working at firms with US$100 billion or more in revenue – those individuals saw their pay rise by 17.37% from 2008 to 2010.
* Gender disparities exist. Across the global sample, men earned an average of US$65,901 compared with women, who earned just US$55,790. However, in six countries – Denmark, France, India, Singapore, South Africa, and Switzerland – women earned more than men during each of the three years analyzed.

“While most translation and localization professionals saw wage increases, earning levels fell for workers located in some countries, such as Ireland and South Africa,” Kelly points out. “Still, on the whole, compensation on both the supply and the demand sides of the language services market grew steadily throughout the economic downtown, reinforcing our past findings that this is a recession-resistant industry.”

Two in three would take a pay cut to save their company

April 15th, 2010

The UK’s only recruitment agency review site has today revealed that three  in four British workers would have considered taking a pay cut or cutting down on their hours if their company was in financial difficulty during the recession.

New nationwide research conducted by the UK’s only recruitment agency review site had revealed that nearly  three in four workers would have taken pay cuts or worked less hours during the recession in a bid to save their company.

Www.HireScores.com polled 1,298 people to see how far people would have gone during the recession in order to keep hold of their jobs and save their company. Of those who would make a compromise, 63% said that they would have been willing to take a pay cut in order to save their company if the recession had affected the business financially.

Of those who said they would take a cut, one in five, 21% said that they would have taken a cut of up to 5% if it meant they could stay in their current employment. Half said that they would be willing to take a 2% decrease in their wages, with only one in ten people claiming they would allow a 10% decrease. Of the people that said they would take a pay cut, half said they would only do so if their boss were to take one too.

61% of those polled said that they would be willing to do more hours for no extra money in an attempt help out their employer. Four in five people who believed that this would help their company said that they thought it would eliminate the need for the employer to hire temps or extra staff to cover the workload.

The top things employees would have done to save their jobs and company during the recession are:

1. Take a pay cut – 63%
2. Work over time for no extra money – 61%
3. Work less hours – 52%
4. Go without annual bonus– 46%
5. Print less – 39%
6. Unpaid leave – 37%
7. Give up their company car – 35%
8. Give up their work phone– 33%

Of the 26% workers who said that they wouldn’t make an allowance in order to help their employer out, one in three, 34%, said that they didn’t care about the job that they had. Half, 49% said that they were unable to make any changes to their working hours or pay due to their living commitments, whilst 17% said that they didn’t like their boss enough.

Lisette Howlett, Managing Director of http://www.HireScores.com said;

“I think it is great that so many of those in employment are willing to make compromises in order to save their company, such as taking pay cuts, cutting down on hours and by taking unpaid holiday. This level of support should give many companies the confidence and ability to work their way through the recession.”

She continued;

“It is interesting to note how much more willing people became if their boss did something first, which says quite a bit about the importance of strong, authentic leadership during challenging times. Also interesting is the number of people who were not willing to make a change who stated that this was because they did not like their boss enough.”

September 30th, 2009

Accrington based Cummins Mellor Recruitment have been an Umbrella Body for the Criminal Records Bureau for 4 years now.

The company has just launched a faster, more efficient, even friendlier CRB service called ‘Personnelchecks.co.uk’ MD Richard Mellor explains;

“Personnel checks have invested in a new ‘disclosit’ facility which has reduced the turnaround time for CRB checks to between 3-14 days. We have always prided ourselves in providing an efficient service as applications are processed the day we receive them, but now with the online facility we can cut out frustrating postal delays. Our friendly staff are on call to help with any query and discretion is assured. Much of our business is through our web site www.personnelchecks.co.uk. We have invested in the technology; have the specially trained staff and the room to expand and create more jobs, we just need to let people know we are here.”

Greg Pope the local Hyndburn MP popped into the offices to hear all about the service and see how Cummins Mellor Recruitment have been successfully fighting through the credit crunch.

“Recruitment agencies act as the barometer for local employment. They are one of the first to witness the peaks and troughs in the market place.” said Greg Pope
Richard Mellor commented;

“The first 6 months of this year were incredibly tough but things have really picked up now and we are busy in every department and none more so than Personnel Checks.”

July 27th, 2009

Phinditt.com is a FREE online classified website. They offer multi-postings in different cities, embedded code promotion, integrated sharing features and more. Phinditt was developed to allow people to create, and view online classified ads free of charge. Their platform gives your ad(s) nationwide as well as worldwide visibility. Also this platform is used to enhance the satisfaction for users by offering promotional methods such as embedded images, bulletin, post, etc.

Great thing in this is that they offer a suggestion box where users can have a chance to interact with Phinditt team. They are giving the best secure and safer place for all users. Some of the features they allow are videos, ads, bulletins, blogging, messaging, developer apps, user feedback, music, ratings, and much more. You can even meet new people here to share everything.

Their main vision is to provide the needs to their users and the guests. They are maintaining a solid relationship with all users. Their main Values are Trust, Commitment, Loyalty, Honor and Dedication. Phinditt is called a social “all site” that helps people communicate on many levels.

After feeling disappointed with the online classified sites that were currently on the web in 2008 , Anthony and Andrew two 19 year old college students decided to give people a way to “Phind what they’re looking for” , just a simple system that would help people find things locally or worldwide, Anthony and Andrew were set on what they wanted to do with the idea , and started to work on the first mock-up design, with little money in there pockets they both put together what little money they had to get a programmer that would help them get the site up and running after going through several design changes , the two brothers finally came across a new modern web 2.0 look for the launching of phinditt. Phinditt received its first investment in 2008. Anthony and Andrew decided that no matter how big the site became they would never charge users or guest to pay to use the site. There is no required registration for phinditt, its very user friendly. Both subscribers and the number of postings grew rapidly in the middle of 2009, Anthony knew he would have to put school on the backburner. Phinditt allows users to flag a posting that appears to violate the site’s policies. Andrew thought of adding a suggestion box to the homepage of phindit to see what users really wanted to see on the site, Phinditt got great feedback from users and started to get thousands of suggestions a day. Phinditt offers users HTML embedded sharing codes to help users promote their ads on social websites. Anthony says “Phinditt works because we allow the people to find whats being offered in their community or the community around them”

Facebook App Monetizing Networks Hits 1K Member Mark in 5 Days

July 3rd, 2009

Los Angeles, California ( Prfriend ) July 3, 2009 – A new Facebook application, published by ReferQuest.com, a refer-and-reward forum, reached a significant milestone in 5 days of being open to the public – 1,000 users.  Demand for the application, available at http://apps.facebook.com/referquest/, underscores the continuing trends of individuals seeking ways to monetize their online activities.  The ReferQuest Application allows Facebook users to post needs and offer finder’s fees to those who help them fill those needs, and is available to Facebook users in North America.

Traditionally, social networks have been regarded as a way to stay in touch with friends and family, and to associate with new people to build online relationships.  However, with Facebook purportedly fast-approaching 2 billion visits per month, as per Compete.com’s web analytics tool, social networking holds much more value than just simple communication amongst community members.

Many individuals, and companies alike, are seeking ways to monetize their social activities, and the ReferQuest application is one such tool that helps to fill this developing need.  “Facebook has let users aggregate a wealth of social capital. The ReferQuest Facebook application lets them translate it into speedier searches [for goods or services]…or even incremental income,” states Camille Landau, the CEO of ReferQuest.com.

Examples of current rewards offered through the ReferQuest application reflect the diversity of the new users, and further reinforce the fact that individuals, and businesses alike, are interested in utilizing their social activities for their betterment:

•    $40 offered to recommend a ‘green’ house cleaner

•    $16 offered to recommend a painting instructor

•    $20 offered to recommend a Mandarin tutor

The credit for the initial success of the ReferQuest application, according to Landau, is due to Facebook’s current popularity.  She also hints at why an application, such as the ReferQuest app, can help users to monetize their social activities, “the ReferQuest application is growing very quickly, because so many people have aggregated large networks on Facebook. It gives them a way to leverage their own network’s power, as well as their friends’ and friends-of-friends networks.”

BAE Systems employee presented prize by TV’s dragon

July 2nd, 2009

A member of BAE Systems Submarine Solutions’ Corporate Responsibility team has scooped a top award at a prestigious ceremony.

Paula Short won the Graduate category in the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce Profiting Through Skills – Excellence in Cumbria Awards 2009.

The 25-year-old Communications Advisor was presented with her prize by millionaire investor, and former star of TV’s Dragons’ Den, Richard Farleigh at the Rheged Centre, near Penrith.

Paula, who has worked at the Barrow site for 18 months, saw off stiff competition from two other candidates to land the award.

She said: “It was a surprise even to make the shortlist, so to actually win it given the standard of the other nominations was really pleasing.”

The awards, which were held on 14 May, celebrated the success of individuals and businesses who invest their time, money and effort into learning and development, benefiting both themselves and Cumbria’s economy.

Paula, who went to Chetwynde School and Barrow Sixth Form College before completing a BA (hons) degree in Marketing Management at Manchester Metropolitan Business School, is continuing to learn on the job.

As well as studying for a Diploma at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, she has also secured a workplace mentorship from the former leader of the Barrow Labour party, Terry Waiting, who now works as a Consultant for BAE Systems Submarine Solutions. Paula said: “I’m now able to pass on these new skills to the wider community as part of my role in the Corporate Responsibility team. It presents me with the opportunity to visit schools and colleges to explain what BAE Systems does, and hopefully help attract some of them to the business in the future.”  She was nominated for the award by Joe Sides, BAE Systems Submarine Solutions’ Corporate Responsibility Manager.
He said: “Paula has a very determined attitude which has made a huge difference towards the team she works within.”

A New Jobsite Website Is Open For Business

June 21st, 2009

June 2009 – Job losses in the UK media industry have led to the creation of a jobsite specifically for people working in journalism and public relations.

The site, pressjobs.co.uk , works hand-in-hand with top recruitment agencies and employers to provide a free resource for those looking for work in the media.

Press jobs.co.uk is made up of former journalists and public relations professionals. Unlike other media related job sites pres jobs.co.uk is not owned by a multinational or conglomerate.

“We’re a jobsite for the media made by people who actually work in the media,” a spokesman said. “jobs.co.uk Press is dedicated to keeping the media industry moving by providing a free job service for our friends and colleagues. We’ve had enormous support from recruitment consultancies across the board. It makes economic sense to advertise a job vacancy for free rather than paying the hefty charges levied by other recruitment sites. These media jobs sites seem to ignore the fact that costs are being cut almost everywhere you look.”

Media businesses have been forced to restructure, ahead of what is expected to be a painful 2009. Redundancy programmes were unveiled at Trinity Mirror, which has cut 1,200 jobs and axed 44 titles, Channel 4, which will reduce its workforce by 200, and at Independent News & Media, where 90 jobs are being lost.

The Daily Mail and General Trust announced the cutting of 400 jobs last month. In the magazine world, Emap and Haymarket also undertook significant reductions in their headcounts. Pundits expect further cuts to take place at Telegraph Media Group and job losses are expected at the Financial Times. Some 500 posts are believed to be under threat at ITV’s regional news operations, according to the National Union of Journalists. Although regional newspaper groups were encouraged by the BBC Trust’s decision last month to reject the corporation’s plans for a local video-based online service, the BBC said the decision would cost the jobs of 200 journalists.

The spokesman said: “There is no denying the fact that the face of the media industry is changing across the United Kingdom. But there are still hundreds of jobs being created every week in public relations and journalism. Press jobs.co UK is all about providing a showcase for these vacancies.”
