License Plate Recognition System – Alerts on Stolen Vehicle

May 30th, 2009

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is a group supervision method that uses optical character detection on images to examine the license plates on a vehicle. License plate recognition can be used to store the images that have been captured by the camera and the text of the number plate. Some of the systems can even store the photographic image of the driver of the vehicle.application worldwide.

License plate recognition technology or ANPR has gained popularity in security and traffic applications as it is based on the fact that all vehicles have a license plate and there is no need to install any additional tracking apparatus. The main advantage is that the system stores the image record for future references.

The system uses lighting (such as Infra-red) and a camera to take the image of the front or rear of the vehicle which is then analyzed by image-processing software, which extracts the image and the plate information. This data is then used for enforcement or record collection and maintenance.

License plate recognition system or Automatic number plate recognition systems have the following components:

1. License plate capture camera – which captures the images

2. Lighting mostly infra-red, which the driver cannot recognize

3. Framework that is a connection between the image capturing unit and the computer and the software

4. A computer or PC which runs the system

5. The software that is used by the system.

6. The proceedings are recorded on a database which includes the images of the license plate and the driver face if that option is present in the system.

7. The system also uses other hardware including an automatic license plate reader.

Car Detector has two different models or variations:

1. Fixed Camera LPR systems: CarDetector records and informs the concerned authorities regarding any unauthorized vehicles that travel through the chosen security zone, even if the vehicle is moving. The system records the time of detection, the plate number and image and the entire car image if required.

2. Mobile LPR Systems (CDMS): This is designed for mobile law enforcement vehicles. The system automatically detects the vehicle and extracts the plate image, which is then analyzed and matched with the existing database. This helps the police in detecting stolen or suspect vehicles.

Various Uses of Automatic License Plate Reader and Facial Recognition

May 28th, 2009

Face detection or Facial Recognition is a technology that determines the locations and sizes of human faces in random (digital) images. It only focuses on the facial features and leaves apart everything else such as buildings and trees.

Face detection is used in combination with a facial recognition system. It is used in video surveillance and security systems. Facial recognition or Facial Tracking systems are used for a varied number of security purposes:

1. Facial Recognition systems are used in casinos to detect fraud.

2. The US government uses facial recognition for visa processing and it is one of the largest systems in the world.

3. Some new uses of Face Tracking such as to detect voter fraud and ATM fraud are being experimented with.

4. Some of the uses of Facial Recognition systems are not being publicized due to the sensitive nature of the information and its possibility of being used in the wrong hands.

Automatic License Plate Reader is used for a varied number of security purposes:

1. A London municipality uses it as part of their area wide security system.

2. Automatic License Plate Reader is used in border controls to let citizens of some countries to pass through without any checks.

3. It has been used in events to identify potential troublemakers and limit their attendance and foe Intrusion Detection.

4. Some of the uses of Automatic License Plate Reader are not being publicized due to the sensitive nature of the information.

LineUp uses artificial intelligence to identify and document human faces through video streaming. It sends out instant alerts when a security violation happens pr a parameter is breached. The instant alerts give the security personnel and police officers an advantage over the violators.

LineUp also maintains detailed records of the events in a user friendly format that does away with the need of going through each and every recording of the tape. This makes it faster and accurate. It is compatible with existing CCTV systems, which makes it cost effective as well. The system maintains a database and is very useful for City Municipalities, Casinos, VIP and High Risk Areas, Public transport systems, Police work and crime prevention and in military uses. It is being currently used in a wide variety of roles and has lead to a reduction in the cost of security and a more pro-active approach in security measures.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition – ANPR – Supervision Technology

May 26th, 2009

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is supervision technology that was developed in 1976 in the UK and police usage started in 1979. ANPR is also called by various other names such as Automatic vehicle identification, Car Plate recognition, Number plate recognition and License plate recognition system.

The technology uses optical character recognition software to scan images to read the number plates of the vehicles. The ANPR technology is constantly developing and evolving. Its main usage lies in security and police tracking work. It is being used in countries like U.K, U.S.A., Italy, Germany and many European countries. License Plate recognition cameras are also used as speed cameras and in traffic management. The Number plate recognition system is also being used to collect toll tax and congestion charges in various cities like London.

Automatic Number plate recognition increases the chances of recovering stolen vehicles as it can check and verify with a database many times faster than a manual process. In some cases, insurance companies are helping in purchasing these systems as it is ultimately beneficial to them.

Vigilant Video has utilized the above technology to create Car Detector. Car Detector uses the license plate recognition software to capture and store data on unauthorized vehicles.

Car Detector has two variants:

1. Fixed Camera License Plate Recognition Systems (CDFS)

It is being used by businesses to examine deliveries, compute correct parking fees, limit employee access and secure border areas. Car Detector gathers information from video monitoring unit or a still image capturing unit and stores it in a database for future reference. Car Detector uses simulated intelligence and state-of-the-art sensor technology to detect violations. It is currently being used in Commercial Buildings, parking access control, toll collection, airport security including customs check points and corporate surveillance etc.

2. Mobile License Plate Recognition Systems (CDMS)

This is being used by the police vehicles to detect stolen or suspect cars automatically by driving on the highway or while passing through a parking lot. The system uses License Plate recognition and compares it with a database. The system also stores information for any future references.

Vigilant Video is a leading provider of Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems and Video Analytics Software based systems.
