Broward County offers a new academic program for students with mild learning disabilities.
July 2nd, 2009Mountain Peak Academy in Broward County offers an academic program for students with mild learning disabilities.
The Mountain Peak Academy addresses the individual needs of students with mild learning disabilities. Students excel within a mainstream college prep private school setting combined with specialized small group training.
The Mountain Peak Academy (MPA) in Weston, Florida was created to address the needs of a special community of students whose abilities surpass their academic
achievements due to a learning disability. The children in this program must have
average to above-average intelligence with a professionally diagnosed learning
disability and minimal behavioral issues. MPA students enjoy the benefit of
interacting and studying within the mainstream setting of a small college prep
private school while also receiving individualized attention and instruction
through the classes that the Mountain Peak Academy provides. MPA program
instructors work collaboratively with the students’ mainstream teachers to ensure
that the professionally prescribed classroom modifications are being provided in
all educational settings.
Participants in The Mountain Peack Academy are evaluated for entrance using a
combination of tools that can include an IEP that has been developed by the
student’s past school system, a current pshychoeducational evaluation, recent
grade reports and a personal MPA screening. The Mountain Peak Academy is often
able to accept funds that have been awarded to families from the McKay
Scholarship.
Mountain Peak Academy administrators believe that within the proper learning
environment, each student can progress and develop in the classroom while
acquiring knowledge in important school subject areas. Class work is designed to
promote student success, and children are encouraged to learn at their own pace
and style. As students gain skills, they are monitored and encouraged to continue
to move forward to more challenging material. True learning is emphasized over
rote memorization. The programs goal is to build self-esteem among students with
mild learning differences and work towards student independence. This program
can be a good alternative for students looking for an alternative to a
traditional county run ESE program
The curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grade incorporates time-tested
strategies that produce results. This specialized curriculum focuses on language
arts , oral and written communication, and grade appropriate mathematics. Social
studies is also included for fourth and fifth graders. The curriculum for middle
school and high school focuses on the following areas: intensive language arts,
intensive reading, and intensive mathematics.
