The BusinessMagi Question the Typical Small Business Plan
September 1st, 2010In a typically unorthodox statement, the BusinessMagi duo of Michael Christon and Andrew Sayers have questioned the validity of the typical small business plan. The Magi, who are fast developing a reputation for ripping up the rulebook, are asking where the vision fits in. Small business plan or big vision?
Sayers commented, “time and again we’re seeing small business plans that make for a nice read for a lender or investor but lack the original vision and brilliance of the founder.”
This is not to say that a plan isn’t required. Far from it as Christon explains, “we feel it’s essential that every start-up has a small business plan. We’re definitely not advocating an ad-hoc approach, far from it in fact. What we are saying is that the big idea, the vision and the USP’s that the owner brings must be clearly demonstrated in that plan. Why does an owner start a business? Is it to work twice as hard for half the pay of a previous job? Of course not, but all too often that’s exactly what happens!”
The BusinessMagi is a collaboration of entrepreneurs Michael Christon and Andrew Sayers, both of whom have extensive experience in helping businesses grow and thrive, even in the toughest environments.
To help small business owners avoid the mistakes that befall 99% of start-ups, the Magi have released a new video series, the Personal Fulfillment Machine. Designed with a focus on the needs of the owner, the BusinessMagi are helping owners start with and continue with the end in mind. By truly building the business around that initial, clear vision, the small business owner can ensure that his or her needs are met and not lost in the typical plan and more importantly the day to day battlefield of business.
The avoidance of business burnout needn’t be down to chance. As Christon succinctly puts it, “an owner that is achieving his dreams does not get worn out.” He goes on to add, “It’s the owner who has lost his way, who goes round in circles trying to be all things to all people and pleasing none of them, especially themselves, that suffers from exhaustion.”
Basing their principles on the simple premise that every business comes about as a result of a great idea or the dream of the founder, the Magi are pointed about their intentions. Sayers said “What is the point of starting the business if you’re not going to ensure that you get what you want out of it? Compared to being in typical employment, the pay-off has to be worth the sacrifice or why else do it? – You might as well just stick with that ‘safe’ job if you are not going to enjoy a tangible personal benefit from having your own business.”
So having provided the tools to assist small business owners, including many free advisory videos, the Magi are challenging business owners to start with their big vision in mind and to keep both it and their lifestyle dreams front and center throughout the life of their business. After all, there’s more to success than you’ll find in many a small business plan!
