St. Charles Nissan is honored to announce that Nissan has developed new safety features that will help to avoid collisions as well as better protect passengers if one occurs.  The latest technology by Nissan utilizes vehicle-mounted cameras and will help reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries that occur on the roads today.

Nissan’s “safety shield” concept spurned the new technology.  In order to help better protect drivers and passengers, the new features help to discover dangerous situations before they occur in hopes to avoid them completely or minimize damage if one does occur.

Nissan’s Acceleration Suppression for Pedal Misapplication feature is a great new safety addition that helps to avoid careless mistakes.  A common accident is when drivers mistakenly hit the acceleration pedal instead of the brake, typically in a parking lot.  By using the vehicle-mounted cameras, the technology can use its sensors to determine if the car is on the road or in a parking lot.  If the driver presses the accelerator to the floor, the car will only speed ahead if it is determined to be on the road.  The sensors can also pick up moving objects via sonar to discover people and other obstructions around the car.  If an object is found, the brakes will automatically be applied to avoid or lessen the effects of a collision.

Nissan’s multi-sensing system with rear camera is another great safety enhancement to protect drivers and those around them.  The new camera system is able to detect other cars, pedestrians, and moving objects behind and to the side of the vehicle.  If the driver begins to drift past their lane, the camera system can detect the markings of the road and will alert the driver.  The blind spot alert warns the driver when their turn signal is enabled and an obstruction is found in the other lane.  Finally, the moving object detection feature helps when drivers are in reverse to pick up pedestrians and objects that the driver is unable to see.

The third major safety element for new Nissan safety features is the Predictive Forward Collision Warning System.  With the new system, Nissan hopes to reduce the number of pileup accidents that occur.  With a sensor built in the front of the Nissan vehicle, the distance between the vehicle ahead can be determined as well as velocity.  The system can then determine if a decrease of speed is needed to avoid an accident with the car ahead.  Drivers receive a visual and audio alert as well as the tightening of the seat belts.

Nissan developed these new safety measures to protect everyone in Nissan vehicles and around them.  Nissan plans to begin implementing the new safety innovation in vehicles beginning in 2012.

Parking lots and parks are hotspots for accidents, especially where people are accidentally hitting the acceleration pedal instead of the brake.  To counteract this problem, Nissan vehicle-mounted cameras can sense whether the car is on the road or in a parking lot.  When the accelerator is pressed to the floor, the car will only accelerate ahead if it is on the road.  Additionally, the sensors can pick up other obstructions such as people or other vehicles using sonar, and will apply the brakes automatically to avoid or minimize a collision.

Another addition to Nissan’s safety package will be the multi-sensing system with rear camera.  The camera system can detect pedestrians, other cars, and other obstructions to the side and rear parts of the vehicle and will alert the driver of these issues.  The system has a blind spot alert if the driver tries to switch lanes and an obstruction is found.  Lane departure warning is another feature that detects street lane markings and will notify the driver if they have drifted out of their lane.  The final feature is the moving object detection.  When the car is in reverse, the rear camera works to find any moving objects such as people.  If a moving object is spotted, an alert will be given to the driver.

The final addition to Nissan’s safety technology is the predictive forward collision warning system.  Pileup accidents cause very severe injuries and fatalities on the road.  To avoid more pileups, Nissan has installed a sensor in the front of the vehicle that can detect velocity of objects ahead and distance between the object and the driver’s car.  If the sensor determines a decrease in speed is needed, the driver will receive an audio and visual alert and the seat belt will be automatically tightened.

All of Nissan’s latest safety enhancements are to protect all drivers and passengers and to help avoid and limit damage if a collision occurs.  The new safety features will be installed on Nissan vehicles starting in 2012.
