Keep in mind what may be standard amenities in your country or region may not be standard over there, as cultures differ. Above all, have fun!

Wigan named the second hand capital of the UK

April 21st, 2010

The UK’s fastest growing second hand website has revealed that those who live in Wigan are more likely to buy second hand than any other UK city.

The UK’s fastest growing second hand website, www.Preloved.co.uk, has today revealed that North West city Wigan is the second hand capital of the UK. Preloved.co.uk analysed site statistics to find the number of visits from each UK city and discovered that in March 2010 there were 13,872 from Wigan, equating to 17% of the city’s total population.

Visitors from Wigan also spent 30% longer on the site than the national average, and viewed 37% more pages.

Amongst all searches for second hand items, those from Wigan searched most frequently for caravans. This was closely followed by cars, sofas and then fish tanks.

Birmingham came in second with 15% of the city’s population visiting the site during the month of March. The capital came in at number four with 11% of its 8 million strong population visiting the site in the last month.

Londoners were keen to grab a second hand laptop, with bikes and pushchairs also being particularly popular.

The cities most likely to buy second hand, based on the number of visits to Preloved per head of population:

  1. Wigan – 17%
  2. Birmingham – 15%
  3. Rotherham – 15%
  4. London – 11%
  5. Manchester – 10%
  6. Bolton – 9%
  7. Nottingham – 9%
  8. Glasgow – 8%
  9. Leeds – 8%
  10. Bristol – 7%

Scousers came bottom of the list with only 4% of the nearly half a million Liverpudlians visiting the site during the month of March. Of those from Liverpool who did use the site, the Apple iPhone was a particularly popular search.

Edinburgh was the third least likely to buy second hand with only 5% of the total population of the city visiting the site. Of those that did, wedding dresses were a popular second hand buy.

Ian Buzer, Managing Director of Preloved.co.uk said:

“These statistics are interesting as it enables us to grasp which cities are the most second hand savvy and what things people in different places like to buy online. It’s fascinating to see that the people of Wigan have an unusually high affinity to caravans and fish tanks. We feel that by releasing the figures, it will help the public see what kind of things are popular online, which helps if anyone wants to raise some extra cash by selling their unwanted clutter.”

He continued,

“Not only was Wigan the city that visited the site the most frequently, it was also the one that submitted the most classified ads. At Preloved we are trying to encourage buying and selling within local communities as it is safer and more fun to meet with local people. The fact that places such as London, Glasgow and Bristol are so active on the site should encourage others in these cities to explore what people in their area have to offer.”

The statistics showed that, combined, there were nearly 3 million visits to the site during March, which equates to 5% of the UK population.

Heart Internet offer generic Nominet tag to resellers

November 12th, 2009

Nottingham, United Kingdom ( 2009) – Heart Internet, a leading web hosting company based in the UK, have added a new generic Nominet tag to their control panel to allow resellers to transfer and register domain names without Heat Internet’s tag appearing anywhere!

Due to Nominet’s rules relating to the registration of .uk domain names, until now all domain names had to be registered through the Heart Internet tag, thus allowing resellers’ clients to see that Heart Internet was the hosting company. But, this has now all changed with the addition of Heart Internet’s new generic tag, which provides resellers with a truly white label web hosting package, without ever revealing Heart Internet’s name or details.

Called EXTEND, the new white label tag can be accessed in the preferences section of the Reseller Hosting Control Centre and enables resellers to transfer and register domain names under their own brand identity, while ensuring the same superior hosting for which Heart Internet are renowned.

“We work constantly to improve the service we offer to resellers,” said Jonathan Brealey, Managing Director of Heart Internet. “With the addition of the new generic tag, we can now offer a bespoke and completely white label service to resellers, which helps to maintain reseller brand integrity.”

Heart Internet research shows 2 in 3 website owners underestimate the importance of their web hosting

October 25th, 2009

Nottingham, United Kingdom (October 15, 2009) – Website owners are putting their website’s stability and performance at risk by failing to understand how important their choice of web host is according to research conducted by UK web hosting company Heart Internet (www.heartinternet.co.uk). The results of the study found 2 in 3 web site owners (67 per cent) do not consider a reliable hosting platform as the most important element of their website.

The survey, commissioned to provide an insight in to internet user’s attitudes towards running a website, found that services displayed (18 per cent), having 24×7 support and technical back up (18 per cent), keeping their readers updated with news (15 per cent) and using the latest technologies (7 per cent) were most considered to be the most important elements of running their own website.  Jonathan Brealey, managing director of Heart Internet said “Because web hosting sits in the background out of sight, site owners can often view the hosting as an afterthought or that all hosting is the same.” Jonathan continued “More often than not, attention only turns to hosting when their web host has technical issues or their site outgrows the hosting and they experience down time. Putting your choice of web host at the top of your priority list is essential for the smooth operation of your website”.

As one of the UKs leading web host, Heart Internet provides individuals and businesses with everything they need to get their website online including domain names, shared web hosting, dedicated servers and reseller hosting.

Pamper time for Cumbria Chamber at Lake District Hotels

October 2nd, 2009

It was pamper time at the Lodore Falls Hotel this week at a networking event organized by the Cumbria Chamber of Commerce.

The event was a sell out in only a few days and more than thirty ladies enjoyed an afternoon of relaxed networking between treatments and afternoon tea.

The Cumbria Chamber of Commerce has been organizing a variety of different events for members and this is the second time they have gathered at the Lodore Falls Hotel this year. Earlier in May the Chamber hosted an event at the hotel which was aimed at women. The positive feedback from that evening lead Suzanne Caldwell, the Chambers Enterprise & Development Manager to organize this Spa pamper networking event.

Suzanne said “We recently held a golf day which was mainly attended by men so we thought SPA networking afternoon would be perfect for businesswomen who can use the day to meet new contacts and take time to address their work life balance. The Lodore Falls Hotel is a fantastic venue, they are used to catering for groups and events and the food is always first class. The facilities are excellent and we have been well looked after – we enjoyed afternoon tea in our robes and felt very comfortable doing so!”

Kit Graves, Director of the luxury Lake District Hotels Ltd Group said “Christine Bibby our Spa Manager has worked hard to make sure our Chamber guest had chance to experience SPA treatments in peace and tranquility – there were a lot of treatments and it was important to us that they didn’t feel rushed. They were certainly very relaxed when they enjoyed their afternoon tea and I am sure a lot of networking was done too – just in a more informal way!”

Anyone interested in finding out more about organizing group Spa Days at the hotel should contact Christine at the Lodore Falls Hotel on 017687 77285 or visit http://www.lakedistricthotels.net/spabreaks. Lake District Hotel Celebrates Borrowdale Valley History

September 28th, 2009

The Borrowdale Hotel steps back in time with an exhibition of old photographs depicting life in the Borrowdale valley hundreds of years ago. The exhibition is set to run until the end of October.

The display, by kind permission of Patricia Roscamp, is made up from historical photographs that have been hung in the Borrowdale Hotel bar. It is quite fitting that the photographic exhibition is being held at the Borrowdale hotel in the Lake District – built over 140 years ago it was the first purpose built hotel in the valley.

General Manager Stephen Wilcock is also marking the occasion by introducing a luncheon and dinner menu that is representative of the 1800’s. Dinner guests can choose from today’s a-la-carte menu, or choose dishes from a menu available to guests in the 19th century. The menu is as close to tradition as possible, but certainly doesn’t go as far as Heston Blumenthal’s Tudor feasts shown on TV last autumn. Diners can choose from two, three or four courses which includes Victorian favourites like ‘Ham Hock Terrine with pureed peas, roast goose and an old fashioned desert of Lemon Posset with almond brandy.

Head Chef Peter Starauscheck has tried to replicate 19th century dishes wherever possible, but knows tastes have changed! “Local ingredients and seasonality have always been important, but Chef’s in 1800 would have goose on the menu any time of the year – today geese are generally available around Christmas, so we had to place a special order to ensure we could include Goose on the menu. Once the Pheasant season begins we will be introducing a three bird roast of goose stuffed with a chicken and pheasant.”

Lunch time visitors to this luxury Lake District hotel can sample the ‘Bygone Days two or three course luncheon’ while they peruse the photos and history of the valley; potted salmon with pink peppercorns, egg, lemon, peppers and a tomato vinaigrette, or chunky vegetable and bacon soup, followed by slow braised shoulder of mutton served upon stewed pearl barley and vegetables. Proper puddings were certainly fashionable in the early 1800’s and a rhubarb and Bramley apple crumble mixed with oats and nuts would be warmly welcomed – then and now.

Stephen Wilcock said “we have completed most of the hotel refurbishment and thought the exhibition would be a good opportunity for local people to come and have a look. We have mounted the old pictures and hung them in the bar so visitors can see how the valley used to look while they enjoy lunch afternoon tea or dinner. Adding a 19th century dinner menu certainly tested Chef – but like today, they would have used as many local lake District ingredients as possible and diners will be delighted when they see what we can offer.”

For more details on the exhibition and details of the 19th century dinner menu at the Borrowdale Hotel please contact the General Manager – Stephen Wilcock on 017687 77224, http://www.lakedistricthotels.net or http://www.lakedistricthotels.net/borrowdalehotel/index.htm.

Lake District Hotels Ltd New Lakeside Wedding Location

August 26th, 2009

From October, couples marrying at the Inn on the Lake Hotel on the edge of Ullswater will be spoilt for choice when an ornate Victorian style Gazebo will be competed in the gardens of the hotel.

The new outdoor covered feature will then be an option for brides wanting an outdoor ceremony or somewhere different for photographs.

Planning permission has already been granted and the Victorian style design of the gazebo is currently being finalized. The covered structure is being made to order and will feature ornate aluminum balustrade and a hardwood handrail to three sides. Painted in ivory white it has a Verdi Gris painted roof, and will be located close to the shore of Lake Ullswater – making it a fairytale location for wedding pictures. It also enables a smaller wedding party to be catered for as often wedding venues are geared around and for the larger wedding ceremony.

Designed for intimate ceremonies the gazebo is already attracting attention from wedding party planners across the county and beyond. The luxury Lake District Hotels Manager Gary Wilson said “we already have one of the most romantic settings for weddings and also have one of the most photographed jetties in the country. Adding a romantic gazebo to the garden is like the icing on the cake and we really think there’s nowhere better for stunning Lake District weddings.

The gazebo is being produced by Andy Thornton Limited who specializes in design and manufacture of ornate metalware.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the new gazebo should contact Gary Wilson at Inn on the Lake Hotel on 017684 82444 or visit http://www.lakedistricthotels.net/innonthelake/index.htm
