Toyota Motor Corp. is on its way to take over the auto-industry once again. With a new, refreshing vehicle lineup and expansion of manufacturing, Toyota is now on track to be named the world’s best-selling automaker by the end of 2012. If Toyota sales remain consistent, the Japanese automaker will also set a new record for annual auto sales.
Although Toyota faced a handful of safety recalls, huge federal fines and devastation due to the Japanese earthquake last year, Toyota seems to have bounced back remarkably. In the past year, Toyota has launched 11 new or completely redesigned models in the U.S. They have also re-vamped their U.S. factories, opening a Corolla plant in Mississippi while expanding their Texas pickup truck manufacturing.
“Toyota has done some smart things,” explained IHS Automotive analyst Rebecca Lindland. “They have concentrated a lot of time and effort on the U.S., which is incredibly important because they make so much money here.”
In the first ten months of 2012, Toyota sold more than 1.7 million cars and trucks in the United States. This is a 30 percent gain, more than doubling the industry growth rate. At this rate, Toyota is expected to sell about 9.7 million vehicles world-wide this year. This will surpass General Motors Co. by more than one million vehicles, setting a record for annual auto sales.
Toyota is dominating the auto market accounting for 14.4% of the U.S. market. This is up from 12.6% during the first 10 months of 2011. The Toyota brand is also the biggest in the U.S. in regards to retail sales, which are sales that do not include rentals and fleets.
The Japanese automaker has also increased U.S.-built shipping. In the first 10 months of 2012, Toyota exported 74,000 U.S.-built vehicles to Canada and Mexico. 29,000 vehicles were also shipped to overseas markets. U.S.-built Toyota exports are on track to increase by more than 50% by the end of this year.
With 19 new or updated models expected to be introduced this year, Toyota is well on its way to become the world’s best-selling auto maker once again.
