Stompernet Launch
September 8th, 2009I have something of a love / hate relationship with Stompernet. Their faculty have an expertize second to none. And then they slip-up on the simplest of customer service issues, like not having anyone on the phone for a faculty office hours and no one taking responsibility for this or re-scheduling the call. This can be quite an issue if you have waited up until one o’clock in the morning to catch the call!
But I consider my membership worth it. The faculty members are excellent and just one good tip can repay my monthly membership several times over. And this is at the present membership cost. The new membership fee of $199 per month is a fraction of the cost.
There have been some big changes at Stompernet recently. Brad Fallon bought out Andy Jenkins. We all loved Andy Jenkins. He put body and soul into building up the organization. But I respect Brad Fallon too. He thinks in a strategic way about business and has some very interesting ideas about growing businesses gleaned from experience and not just theory. One or two excellent faculty members have left, but I like the look of the new team with twenty faculty members and the new offering. Businesses have to grow up and the best people to pioneer a business may not be the best ones to run it when it comes of age.

Nowadays, there is a trend in affiliate marketing to offer a bonus to go with a recommendation. This strikes me as somewhat cynical. I like to only recommend products and services that I know to be of value. You will be interested in whether or not I judge an offer worth your while to test out. And either a recommendation is worth making or it is not worth making. You should not be impressed by some arbitrary addition that I have concocted up to encourage you to buy through my link. This is like recommending a particular ophthalmologist for cataracts and then throwing in heart surgery for free if you take up the recommendation. Many well-respected marketers seem to spend more time on thinking about how they can entice their readers to buy through them than on whether their recommendation is worth making in the first place. So if you are looking for the best bonus, make sure that you never buy from me. My guess is that you may prefer my honest opinion to any other capture device that I could employ.

I have to say that I’m not so impressed with StomperNet anymore. In recent months, they discontinued a bookmarking service that was part of their SMARTS Club subscription – which folks are paying for every month – without any warning or explanation. It just disappeared. When I contacted customer service, they couldn’t provide a reason for the disappearance, or the lack of notification.
Yesterday, with the much-hyped launch, they reconfigured the user interface, again without notice to subscribers that it would be offline for a while, and requiring a call to customer service to get back into the subscribed service I’m paying for. There have been problems with their previous offer deliveries as well. Finally, their much-hyped Net Effect magazine has quickly lost its luster, and is being padded with inane articles, and is no longer with its subscription price. Too bad. They seem to have had a lot of momentum going.

I’m still learning a lot from The Net Effect. And I think Stompernet have the big picture right.
It’s essential to re-assess and drop any offerings that are less effective for ones that are working better, especially if particular ones are not completely white hat.
Service issues are already improving. I know that the whole team have been working hard to implement everything. It’s not easy driving an organization forward whilst attending to every detail too.
The learning experience is still the main value for me – and mostly this is excellent. It is broadening out to include more on elements such as copywriting and testing. The faculty is impressive. It includes: Leslie Rohde, Dan Hollings, David Bullock, Paul Colligan, Dan Crowther, Melanie Benson Strick, Audrey Kerwood, Dave Taylor, Ben Mack, Ross Goldberg, Vin Montello, Todd Chism, John Rhodes, Erik Stafford, Alan Bechtold and Brad Fallon.

I have to say that I have only bought the Net Effect magazine from them, and that was an actually painful experience.
Painful? Yes, haven’t got sent what I paid for, I have two copies of issue 2, one copy of issue 3, and no copies of issue 1. I cancelled. Aside from annoyance, why was it painful?
I live in the UK, this is several time zones from the US where their customer service is based, so a reasonable time to call in the USA, is the middle of the night for me waking me up asking questions such as “Are you SURE you want to cancel your subscription” etc.
I think I would agree with your first sentence:

If I had the money, I would join. Unfortunately, even with the reduced rate, it is still too expensive for me at the moment.
Mike Filisaime had a membership program that he was offering, and part of his sales method was comparing it to Stompernet. He was saying that Stompernet is basically a warehouse of information, whereas the thing that he was offering was more like a mentoring course.
I suspect that if you already have an Internet based business, or have a certain amount of skill already, you would do very well with Stompernet, but if not, I have a feeling that a lot of the information that they give out is too high powered.

The Stompernet launch is a great example of how not to do a launch or provide customer service.
The sales page is deceptive and nothing gets done when the say it is going to get done. When you call them on it in their forum, the posts get deleted. When posts get deleted, you do get a nice email telling you to contact customer service. Their customer service line is not answered and the voice mail box is full. Standard tickets take along time to get answered and the replies are evasive at best.

There may have been some hitches. But it’s a shame to choose to be disappointed by everything and just pick faults.
There are good things happening within Stompernet. There was a simply wonderful Faculty Office Hours I caught this week with Alan Bechtold – a generous, open discussion containing copywriting gems.
